Fred Thompson, making what could be his last stand in South Carolina, has inched up to third in the latest tracking poll leading up to Saturday's first-in-the-South primary. Thompson has 14 percent in the Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released this morning, sliding ahead of Mitt Romney, who slipped to 12 percent, even though some of the polling was done after he won the Michigan primary on Tuesday. Romney is chasing delegates in Nevada, whose caucuses are also Saturday, after saying he believes John McCain has South Carolina locked up. McCain held his lead in the new poll, with 29 percent, compared to 22 percent for Mike Huckabee. Ron Paul and Rudy Giuliani were tied at 5 percent, according to the poll. A Clemson University poll also gave McCain a 29 percent-22 percent edge over Huckabee, who won the leadoff caucuses in Iowa but hasn't finished better than third since. Thompson, the former US senator from Tennessee, plans to air a 60-second ad during today's evening news across South Carolina in which he talks up his conservative credentials in a folksy way designed to appeal to Southern voters. "I've been a conservative all my life," he says, then citing his "100 percent pro-life" record and asserting that Americans' fundamental rights come "from God, not government." McCain, meanwhile, picked up the endorsement today of the Charleston Post and Courier, which also endorsed him in 2000, when he lost to now-President Bush. The newspaper's editorial board said McCain's record in the eight years since only reinforced its belief that the Arizona senator is the best suited for the presidency.

Fred truly respects McPain , because while Flip Romney was cruising the French Alps , McPain was a P.O.W. undergoing brutal torture .
Fred has a deep respect for McPain in that regard , and it truly is unfortunate that McPain has been wrong on so many issues .
I honestly don’t think there is one man (not running now) who all conservatives will support.

A very dear friend of mine is a die hard Dem lefty. I am and would be loyal to him as a friend. Would I support him for high office? Not a chance. Nor he me, I expect. And I would respect him for that.
I don't see anyone at the upper levels as a "God of Conservatism", mores the pity. Fred is certainly campaigning much more as a conservative than the other top candidates.
To be honest, if he is principled about what he claims his political beliefs to be, friendship would not compel him to openly endorse McCain.

The way I understand a brokered convention running....it seems it would be VERY, VERY difficult for someone NOT running now to be the nominee...VERY DIFFICULT!

For some reason I have the O’Rielly factor on, and he just said that Mitt has 15% in SC, and Fred has 10%.
Then he said that if Fred doesn’t up his numbers he is going to drop out.

In the final American Research Group poll in South Carolina, Mike Huckabee has jumped in front of John McCain and now leads 33% to 26%. Fred Thompson moved into third place with 21% as Mitt Romney has dropped to fourth place with 9%.
Key findings: Huckabee leads among Republicans (81% of this sample) with 37%, followed by McCain and Thompson at 22% each. As has been the case in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Michigan, the negative campaign against McCain has been very effective, with McCain losing 7 percentage points among Republicans in 2 days. McCain continues to lead among independents at 48%, with 19% for Huckabee. Romney’s decision to leave South Carolina has cost him over half of his support in the state.

Response: If Fred was a few points behind McCain, then yes, we probably would be motivated to do that. And BTW, why did Fred have to say Romney misled voters in Michigan?
For all the Fred fans out there in case your reading-between-the-line-skills are a little rusty, you're being told to forget it. The "Fred can't win" and "Fred was mean to Mitt" statements are just excuses to provide cover for breaking an informal agreement they never intended to keep in the first place.
Interesting numbers. Hope the trend continues. We need to knock off McPain and the Huckster.
Yep. There are a few who said they would, but I think they have been silenced.
There’s a good article out there that calls Thompson the “anti-soundbite” candidate. It says that Thompson is probably the most thoughtful candidate we’ve had in many elections. The problem is that he treats voters as adults and refuses to talk in soundbites.
It’s a sad reflection of where we’ve sunk to that being thoughtful isn’t worth very much. Reminds me of that story about Adlai Stevenson speaking on a college campus when he was running for President.
“You’ve got the vote of every thoughtful person,” someone yelled.
“That’s not good enough” he replied, “I need a majority.”
