Over the past several days, the only real movement in South Carolinas Republican Presidential Primary has been a four-point gain for Fred Thompson and a five-point decline for Mike Huckabee.
The big winner from that trade-off is John McCain.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows McCain at 28%, Huckabee at 19%, Mitt Romney at 17%, and Fred Thompson at 16%. Rudy Giuliani and Ron Paul are tied with 5% support. Giuliani is betting his entire campaign on a strong showing in Florida, where he is now tied for the lead with three others....

Swiss chard is better than Belgian endive, which was one of the reasons Michael Dukakis lost in 1988 (that, and riding in the tank). Dan Quayle took him to task over his suggestion that Americans should grow more Belgian endive. That was supposed to solve farmers’ economic problems, or maybe it was supposed to end the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Ugh, *this* is the real republican primary? McCain with a 9-point lead over everyone else? Republicans dont care about McCain-Feingold, comprehensive immigration reform, or a near-solidly Democrat voting record? This, too, shall pass.

I have read your posts along this same line all day.
Did you watch the CNN interview on Sunday? He did go after McCain, although not as much as Huckabee. But Blitzer ASKED about HUCKABEE, played tapes of HUCKABEE, quoted HUCKABEE.
Huckabee’s voters are the ones that Fred would appeal to the most. McCain’s voters are mostly, as Rush called them today, JELLO! Wobbly middle, “independants”, rogue democrats.

Where is his support coming from?
I understand Huckabee support better than McCain's--I even understand Ron Paul support better than McCain's. I keep thinking it's the really liberal wing of the Republican party that support McCain, but shouldn't that vote be split now? What happened to Rudy?

This, too, shall pass.
It better pass quickly, because if McCain wins two in a row shortly before Super Tuesday, then this early primary is done.

Thompson has told allies in recent days that he is exploring seriously a bid for president in 2008 in response to what he has described as strong encouragement from Republicans dissatisfied with the current slate of candidates.
Thompson said one reason he is hesitant about running is his longtime friendship with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). Thompson was one of only four Republican senators to endorse McCains 2000 presidential campaign and was an important ally in McCains effort to pass campaign-finance reform in 2002.
