The last mayor of New York City to conduct a Presidential run was John Lindsay, who hoped, like Giuliani, that the Northeastern transplants in southeast Florida would work to his advantage, although Lindsay ran in the 1972 Democratic primary. He failed, and Giuliani may be setting himself up for a similar failure, especially if McCain wins in Michigan, with the probability that Romney would leave the race after such a loss. If Huckabee wins in South Carolina, he will have strong momentum and will do very well in the Florida Panhandle and the northern counties in general, which are culturally Southern and heavily evangelical. The only way Giuliani can win is if Thompson and Romney remain competitive. IMHO, he made a big mistake not campaigning in Michigan or New Hampshire, and will probably be embarrassed this week by competing with Ron Paul and Duncan Hunter for the bottom of the heap.
