Arkansas Governor Registered For Gifts
Times Record ^ | 11/13/06 | John Lyon

Posted on 11/15/2006 9:56:44 AM CST by Froufrou

“Wedding” registries in the names of Gov. Mike Huckabee and his wife, Janet, have been set up at two department store chains in advance of the Huckabees’ move out of the Governor’s Mansion into a private home.

The term-limited governor leaves office in January, and friends of Janet Huckabee created the registries at Dillard’s and Target stores to help facilitate their transition to private life, Huckabee spokeswoman Alice Stewart said Friday.

The Huckabees purchased a 7,000-square-foot home in North Little Rock this year.

“Some ladies who are friends of Janet’s are giving her a housewarming party,” Stewart said.

Huckabee’s tenure as governor saw many gifts bestowed upon Arkansas official
By JULIA MALONE
Cox News Service
WASHINGTON | If friends or admirers are considering a Christmas gift for suddenly surging Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, here are few things he might not need:

Custom-made cowboy boots; a canoe; fishing rods and tackle; a gun for him ($800); a gun for his wife, Janet Huckabee ($450); his-and-her watches ($595 each); and an all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas to see a prize fight.

Those items — and hundreds more adding up to tens of thousands of dollars — have already been lavished on Huckabee and his family during his decade in relative obscurity as governor of Arkansas.

(snip)

In 1999, Janet Huckabee received $23,000 for her inaugural wardrobe from medical lab entrepreneur Jennings Osborne and his family. Osborne touts his ties with famous friends and politicians.

The governor reported gifts of suits and shoes in addition to more than $19,000 for clothes from Osborne in 1999 alone, as well as free eye care and eyewear, free car repairs, free fuel, gift certificates to Wal-Mart, movie passes and 50 percent off any meals at Wendy’s.

Some Huckabee gifts
•Custom-made cowboy boots, $3,695

•Use of fishing boat, $2,500 per year

•Gift certificate in 2001 from the governor’s Cabinet, $3,600

•Pendant for Janet Huckabee, $2,000

•Cashmere and fox cape for Janet Huckabee, $795

•Cuff links for governor, $2,000

•Bass guitar, $350

“Mr. Huckabee was already being accused of having pretensions to royalty. For example, he accepted $23,000 in clothing and gift certificates from Jennings Osborne, a wealthy supporter and appointee, in 2000 alone, then sued to block the state ethics commission from investigating such gifts.”

Of course, I work for the military and not Arkansas, but where I work, Bribery, Influence peddling and / or kickbacks, lands you in jail not the White House. Is it any wonder the Dems are salivating at the thought of a Huckabee candidacy.

Come on you Hucksters, put a “Christian” spin on this one.

Although I’m not a Huckabee fan, this article is from the New York Times. So I’m not giving it much value.

Mrs. Huckabee remains indignant, writing off her detractors as either mistaken about her or mean-spirited. ''I'd be lying if I said it didn't bother me,'' she said in an interview. ''If it wasn't for the grace of God, I'd have shot a few people already.'' ''Jesus wasn't liked, either,'' she added. ''And Jesus was mistreated, and called names.''

It really is the Clintons all over again. Spooky. Just how long was this "former Baptist preacher" actually a preacher anyway?

AFTER 30 YEARS, FIRST LADY GETTING COLLEGE DEGREE
The Commercial Appeal - May 7, 2003
Author: Caryn Rousseau The Associated Press
Arkansas First Lady Janet Huckabee says that while she was running her unsuccessful bid for secretary of state last year, she would spend hours studying while traveling to campaign appearances.

Thirty years after starting her undergraduate work, Huckabee is set to graduate with her bachelor’s degree from John Brown University on Saturday.

“Once I signed up, I wasn’t going to quit,” Huckabee said Monday. “There were a lot of late nights studying on the road. And you can hook up the Internet in any hotel.”

Huckabee will don a cap and gown and walk across the stage in Siloam Springs on Saturday while her husband, three children, mother and sisters watch. She is receiving an undergraduate degree in organization management.

Huckabee quit attending Ouachita Baptist University after just one year at the Arkadelphia school. She married Gov. Mike Huckabee and started a family.

“I got married and had babies and never went back,” Huckabee said. “I travel the state encouraging people to get their degrees, and the whole time I’m thinking, ‘Well I didn’t do that.’

“I had a desire to go and get that finished.”

She earned 21 hours at OBU and finished the remaining 106 hours in the last 18 months. Huckabee , 47, is graduating cum laude with a GPA of 3.5. John Brown has about 1,500 students.

She said she attended classes at JBU’s satellite campus in Little Rock, at Camp Robinson with Vincennes University and online coursework through Pulaski Technical College. Huckabee took courses in business ethics, law, management and communications.

“It was hard to balance,” she said. “I had an election I was running and Mike was running an election, with three kids, and being First Lady. It was very difficult, but I was committed.”

Gov., wife to renew vows — Defends using state funds for event
Commercial Appeal, The (Memphis, TN) - November 9, 2004
Author: James Jefferson Associated Press
LITTLE ROCK - Gov. Mike Huckabee said Monday that he and his wife, Janet , would renew their wedding vows along with 1,000 other couples at a mass covenant marriage ceremony on Valentine’s Day.

The event will be at North Little Rock’s Alltel Arena.

The governor, a former Baptist minister, defended using taxpayer money to promote the ceremony and cover some of its costs.

“We believe it’s an important enough event to use this time and resources for it because, quite frankly, we’re spending an enormous amount of money dealing with the consequences of marriages that don’t work out,” the governor said.

Huckabee was joined by a Christian radio broadcaster who urged pastors to ban noncovenant marriage ceremonies from their churches. Covenant marriages require premarital counseling and a mandatory two-year waiting period before divorce.

(snip)

Huckabee did not disclose the total cost for the Valentine’s Day event, which will include an appearance by Grammy-winning gospel singer CeCe Winans, but said most of the cost would be covered by contributions from participating churches.

That woman towers over Huckabee, and you can just see how bossy she is. She leads him on stage and proceeds him off.

This article doesn't surprise me, at all!

GOV. HUCKABEE MISUSED FUNDS, EX-AIDE CLAIMS
Commercial Appeal, The (Memphis, TN) - October 23, 1998
Author: Joan I. Duffy The Commercial Appeal Little Rock Bureau
Gov. Mike Huckabee improperly supplemented his $67,000 annual salary with a $60,000-a-year account designed for maintaining and operating the governor’s mansion, the mansion’s former administrator charged Thursday.

Kamala Williams, fired from the Governor’s Office last spring, three months before vesting in the state employee retirement system, also accused Huckabee of using state employees and state equipment on his campaign and personal business.

``Mike Huckabee presents himself as the ultimate in integrity, but the truth is substantially different than that,’’ Williams said in an interview. ``Yes, people will think of me as a disgruntled ex-employee, but I didn’t say anything that can’t be documented.’’

Williams provided memos and computer printouts she said documents the use of the governor’s mansion fund for family meals, vacation groceries and personal items ranging from candy and balloons for Huckabee ‘s daughter, Sarah, to nine pairs of panty hose for the first lady. Williams told The Commercial Appeal that Huckabee ‘s older son, John Mark, used his father’s state credit card for personal purchases and the mansion account paid to repair a broken window on younger son David’s pickup.

The governor’s mansion account was created by a 1953 law that restricted its use ``for payment of upkeep of the governor’s mansion and grounds.’’ Difficulties in accounting led to the practice of using the fund for all mansion groceries, including food for the governor and his family. Previous governors routinely reimbursed the fund for strictly personal items, such as dog food or contact lens solution, that wouldn’t be used for routine mansion operations.

Use of the account was further restricted by a constitutional amendment in 1993. The amendment increased the salaries of constitutional officers and did away with what had been called public relations accounts, which had been used to supplement personal income.

Republican Huckabee , who faces Democrat Bill Bristow Nov. 3, was campaigning in Texarkana Thursday. Campaign manager Rex Nelson said the governor had no comment on the allegations.

``I can tell you she (Williams) is not a credible individual,’’ Nelson said.

Questions about Huckabee ‘s personal finances have dogged him since he entered politics in 1992. Complaints were filed with the state Ethics Commission after he put his wife on his campaign payroll, hired his own public relations firm for campaign business and leased his own airplane to his campaign. He also has been questioned about a private organization, Action America, which collected money from secret donors and paid Huckabee to give speeches.

To followup on this 2002 article from the NY Times, here is a segment of an article on Janet Huckabee from Newsweek, By Arian Campo-Flores | NEWSWEEK
Dec 17, 2007 Issue

“As Arkansas’s First Lady, Huckabee was energetic and hands-on, climbing atop Habitat for Humanity construction projects and handing out her personal number to Hurricane Katrina evacuees who landed in the state. But she also came across at times as aggressive and churlish. Janet’s low point: her run for secretary of State in 2002, in which she was “perceived as thin-skinned, even mean-spirited,” says Janine Parry, a political-science professor at the University of Arkansas. Huckabee attacked her opponent over a past DWI conviction and suggested, without verification, that he still had a drinking problem. Responding to critics who questioned her use of state vehicles and troopers to campaign, she told The New York Times, “If it wasn’t for the grace of God, I’d have shot a few people already.” She got trounced in her race—voters saw her run as an unseemly power play by the couple—and nearly dragged down her husband in his re-election bid that year.”

What disgusts me most of all is how these sick creepy Huckabees invoke the name of Jesus at every turn, while they themselves are unworthy of him as they practice deception and immorality masquerading as public service. How depressing to see all these deluded fools voting for him.

HUCKABEE DIDN’T LIST DAUGHTER’S GIFT TICKET TO VEGAS
Commercial Appeal, The (Memphis, TN) - October 28, 1998
Author: Joan I. Duffy The Commercial Appeal Little Rock Bureau
A campaign advertising agency paid $927 for personal charges Gov. Mike Huckabee made on his state-issued credit card during a National Governor’s Association meeting last year in Las Vegas, state records show.

The money paid for his daughter, Sarah, 16, and a friend to accompany Huckabee and wife Janet on the July 1997 trip. The group flew to Las Vegas on the State Police airplane.

Clint Albright, president of Albright Ideas, said he agreed to pay the charges after being told by Huckabee ‘s chief of staff, Brenda Turner, that the governor wanted to bring his daughter and her friend.

“I agreed to do so as a gift,” Albright said Tuesday. Huckabee failed to list the gift on his 1997 Statement of Financial Interest, which public officials are required to file every year to disclose outside sources of income and gifts they receive.

Albright said he wasn’t asked directly to pay for the trip.

“As I recall what the conversation was about, it was `Gosh, it would be nice, some of the other governors take their kids, Sarah’s really wanting to go,’ and I just chirped up and said, `Well, the governor does a lot for me, we do a lot of business with him - let this be my treat.’ “

He said he believed the conversation was with Turner and that Huckabee was not present, “but I couldn’t swear to it.”

Turner has a policy of not speaking to the media, and Huckabee was campaigning Tuesday. He faces Democrat Bill Bristow of Jonesboro for the governorship next Tuesday.

Rex Nelson, Huckabee ‘s campaign manager, denied that Turner was soliciting private gifts for the Huckabees.

“Brenda’s job is to see that we don’t stick the taxpayers with the expenses we shouldn’t be sticking them with,” he said.

Why didn’t the Huckabees pay for Sarah’s trip?

“I’m sure they could have, but if someone wants to give a gift to the daughter, certainly there is no problem with that,” Nelson said.

Albright’s partner is Ron Fuller, who raised more than $2 million as Huckabee ‘s campaign treasurer. The company has placed television and radio ads for Huckabee ‘s political campaigns since he ran for lieutenant governor in 1993.

He defended the accuracy of Huckabee ‘s disclosure form.

“I think it’s very accurate,” Nelson said. “Does a gift to a child have to be reported? I don’t know, I’m asking you.”

He said the report would be amended if necessary.

Huckabee settle suit over misuse of funds Arkansas leader cleared of wrongdoing
The Dallas Morning News - March 25, 2000
Author: Suzi Parker, Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News
Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee may have taken a ribbing over buying ribs with his mansion allowance, but he won’t have to worry about it anymore.

As part of a settlement announced Thursday, Mr. Huckabee acknowledged he’s been sued for allegedly misusing his taxpayer-funded allowance for Governor’s Mansion operations. But he won’t have to pay back any of the $60,000-a-year fund or admit any wrongdoing.

Randy Wright of Little Rock, an attorney for one of the plaintiffs, said the lawsuit forced the Huckabees to alter their lifestyle. He said that the mansion fund could not be used for meals outside the mansion, such as the time the governor bought ribs for a friend in Memphis, Tenn.

The lawsuit filed by three Democrats argued that the fund was improperly used to buy items such as pizza, pantyhose for First Lady Janet Huckabee , tacos and dog food. Kamala Williams, a former mansion administrator for the Huckabees, initially made the allegations.
