John Kerry: McCain Approached Me About Joining Dem Ticket in 2004
MyDD ^ | April 3, 2007 | Jonathan Singer

Posted on 01/11/2008 9:29:47 PM PST by khnyny

On Monday afternoon I had the chance to speak with Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, the Democratic Party's nominee for President in 2004. During the interview, which covers a range of topics and which I will be posting later this afternoon, an item of particular interest jumped out at me: According to Sen. Kerry, it was John McCain's staff who approached his campaign about potentially filling the Vice President slot on the Democratic ticket in 2004. Take a listen to and a look at the interchange...

Jonathan Singer: There's a story in The Hill, I think on Tuesday, by Bob Cusack on the front page of the paper talking about how John McCain's people -- John Weaver -- had approached Tom Daschle and a New York Congressman, I don't remember his name, about switching parties. And I was wondering if you could talk a little bit about what your discussions were with him in 2004, how far it went, who approached whom... if there was any "there" there.

John Kerry: I don't know all the details of it. I know that Tom, from a conversation with him, was in conversation with a number of Republicans back then. It doesn't surprise me completely because his people similarly approached me to engage in a discussion about his potentially being on the ticket as Vice President. So his people were active -- let's put it that way.

Singer: Okay. And just to confirm, you said it, but this is something they approached you rather than...

Kerry: Absolutely correct. John Weaver of his shop... [JK aswers phone]

As you might know from reading my posts in the past, I don't usually addend my own thoughts to my interviews. I like to think they speak for themselves. But...

I don’t think so. I’m sure he would have mentioned it if he had.

The stories of the closeness of Kerry and McCain are not new. Rumors persisted even in 04 that there might be a Kerry-McCain ticket. McCain has even said he considered switching parties after his 00 defeat.

Just when the Bush campaign had wrestled John Kerry to to the mat on his weak and waffling record on national security and defense, who leaps over the ropes and into the ring to revive him? Why, none other than the egomaniacal, sore-losing Senator from Arizona, John McCain.

Despite weeks of steadfast rejections from Senator John McCain, some prominent Democrats are angling for him to run for vice president alongside Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, creating a bipartisan ticket that they say would instantly transform the presidential race.

If McCain gets the nod, he will offer the Veep slot to Lieberman. Guaranteed.

And if he doesn’t get it he will probably ask to be Hilary’s vp.

The reason it doesn't pass the smell test is McCain's ego. Do you really think he (a genuine Viet Nam war hero) could serve under Kerry, a phony one?

I'm not saying it couldn't happen. McCain delights in p*ssing on conservatives and calling it bi-partisanship.

But I think it more likely that Lurch would be a Veep under McInsane.

"People like Kerry build their entire careers on lying."

You got it....... And McCain IS "people like Kerry". You must not have watched the debate where he said his amnesty was not an amnesty. As a matter of my opinion, I think John McCain is possibly more dishonest than Kerry.

Kerry is being a bit disingenuous here. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if John Weaver had stirred the pot a bit on his own but the offer came from the Kerry camp. There is no way Kerry would be confused as to the details because he spent four or five days at McCain's "ranch" near Sedona. There was a freep at the top of the hill where the road leads down to the house.

McCain was offered VP with unprecedented powers - control over all things military. It would have been a virtual co-presidency. McCain's response was "I am a Republican."

This account came from a McCain staffer and I have no reason to disbelieve it.

Peggy, I think he did. Didn't he work on a film crew or something like that? Oh yeah, he was on patrol with a film crew. Yea, sounds like your average GI in the service to his country himself.

From what I hear John got a few scratches while serving in the armed forces. They gave him a purple heart and sent him home. He came home and wound up singing like 'Jane Fonda' on the floor of the Senate of the United States.

John's a war zero.

Thank you so much for clearing it up for me. Gee, I wonder why he never mentioned serving when running for President, although, I vaguely remember something about a swift boat.
