California Proposes Taking Control of Thermostats By Monisha Bansal CNSNews.com Staff Writer January 11, 2008
(CNSNews.com) - The California Energy Commission has proposed requiring thermostats that allow the government to control the temperature of homes and businesses in case of high energy prices or shortages, a measure that some critics are calling "draconian."
The proposed regulations would require all residential and non-residential buildings to have a Programmable Communicating Thermostat (PCT).
The regulations state that "all PCTs shall be distributed with a non-removable Radio Data System (RDS) communications device ... which can be used by utilities to send price and emergency signals." For price events, thermostats can be offset by up to four degrees, but "customers shall be able to change the offsets and thermostat settings at any time during price events."
Upon receiving an emergency signal, "the PCT shall respond to commands contained in the emergency signal, including changing the setpoint by any number of degrees or to a specific temperature setpoint. The PCT shall not allow customer changes to thermostat settings during emergency events."
"This brings new meaning to the term 'climate control,'" said Peyton Knight, director of environmental and regulatory affairs at the conservative National Center for Public Policy Research.
"One of the reasons that liberal societies have free markets ... is so that people can make judgments and make tradeoffs for themselves," Tom Firey, regulatory policy analyst with the libertarian Cato Institute, told Cybercast News Service.
"In a sense, what California is doing is making the price infinite - at no price can you get the energy you need," he said. "They could claim that they are trying to give people a price break, but in a theoretical sense they're actually not - they are saying 'you can't get it at all,'

Whats wrong with california???
FASCIST state.
Inching toward the “mark of the beast”. The good news is at the same time there will be an alternative. But for some strange reason you don’t here about the “mark of Christ.”
Revelation 3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.
Is Gray Davis back? :0)
Come on, please tell me how liberal trash can honestly argue that the right to privacy extends to ones sex life in the home, ala SCOTUS ruling striking down sodomy laws and making sexual deviance legal, and then reach into that same house and control your heat.
How can they even believe for one moment that it is not Fascist to do this in the interest of the State?
Well, so far it’s just a proposal by a regulatory commission but these things, once proposed, have an endless half life. If it’s rejected now the idea will never die and if Kali institutes the policy you can bet at least 10 states will be right behind them. I guess you can always buy a portable electric heater, that is until they put a regulatory device on your meter to ensure you’re not using more than your allotted share.
Kali’s answer to the energy crisis: rationing
California seems to be a state of mind,
what is wrong with these people ?

U.S. denial of California emissions waiver criticized
Sen. Boxer, chairman of a Senate environment panel, says she might subpoena documents concerning possible White House interference.

Two weeks before Christmas, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger abruptly announced that he would declare “a fiscal emergency” in January, a declaration that would require the California legislature to meet quickly in special session - with the authority to slash state spending across the board by 10 per cent. California was headed, he said, for a budget deficit of $14-billion (U.S.) - precisely the kind of crisis that put him in the governor’s mansion in Sacramento in the first place.

California’s net loss of 1.3 million people, from 1997 through 2006, cost the state billions of dollars in lost tax revenue - because many of the people who fled were high-income earners and because California relies disproportionately on revenue from highly progressive personal income tax rates. The richest 10 per cent pay 75 per cent of the state’s personal income tax revenue.
.........................................................
California’s losses are Nevada’s gains. From 1997 through 2006, California GDP increased 80 per cent; Nevada GDP increased 123 per cent. California personal income increased 74 per cent; Nevada personal income increased 120 per cent. California net domestic in-migration (as a percentage of population) fell 3.5 per cent; Nevada net in-migration grew 20 per cent.
“once proposed, have an endless half life. If its rejected now the idea will never die and if Kali institutes the policy you can bet at least 10 states will be right behind them.”
I agree with the half life of stupid ideas but IMO the Kali first and then the world theory is breaking down. Kali is just too radical and too obviously being run into the ground.
What are they going to call the thermostat controls.
“Terminators”
“Welcome to the Peoples’ Republic of Kalifornia. We’ll take that thermostat; you’ll need one of these approved thermostats. Cold? No, your’re not cold; or hot, for that matter. WE know the precise temperature at which you function best, and we’ll see to it that temperature is maintained.
Now, move along.”
So, to make up for the state’s inability and unwillingness to address the energy needs of a growing economy and society, they will control the available resources and further restrict free choice by consumers. Of course, there’s likely a way around all this silliness for those with the resources to pay for them.
The libs in San Fran-sissy-sco are probably cheering this development.
They can not make me turn mine up, oops I forgot, I don’t have a stinking thermostat.
An enterprising inventor should get busy inventing the attachable device that heats the thermostat in the summer (thereby causing it to cool your house beyond what the state desires), and cooling the thermostat in the winter (for the opposite effect).
Of course, I’m sure they’ll outlaw such devices.
Carlos.
That or they can call them “Therminators.”
Right before Christmas there was an article in the Stockton Record touting an new electronic recycling company. The article basically said that we should all not buy any new electronic for Christmas and just keep using our old stuff. Does something seem to defy logic here? Are we trying to put out of business the business we pretend to promote?
Face it liberalism defies logic.
The Legislature is mostly liberal democrat.
What will they do to people who do not heat their homes.. I for one do not.. an extra sweater, will usually suffice here in San Diego..
Actually it sounds like a sweet service *for a private company to offer to willing customers*
Seriously if a private company could hook up with a utility and say would you offer a customer a discount if they had a system to automatically lower their energy (heat nat/gas) during times when you are paying peak for it?
If the answer is yes go to the energy providers customers and offer the service for a fee which is a % less than they would save... Everybody wins..
