Mitt's Divided Strategy (Thompson Rumors Traced to Romney)
Townhall ^ | 5-Jan-08 | Robert Novak

Posted on 01/05/2008 2:39:49 PM PST by Jay777

Published reports that Fred Thompson soon will withdraw from the Republican presidential contest and endorse Sen. John McCain have been traced in part to Mitt Romney's campaign, trying to stir up strife between McCain and Thompson.

There is no question, however, that McCain strategists would welcome Thompson's endorsement if and when he drops out. It could help McCain in the Jan. 19 South Carolina primary.

Isn’t Novak the same ass-hat that predicted on Monday that Fred would get 1% in Iowa?

I smell a rat with this guy. When it comes to Fred, DO NOT TRUST NOVAK!

Actually, I think McCain should throw his support behind Thompson.

John McCain is right there with Rudy as two men who were made by 9/11. Rudy was on his way out and we couldn't hand him his hat fast enough. Thanks for your services, have a nice life.

McCain, on the other hand, was in the middle of a non-binding recall effort, which he claimed he would honor if it succeeded. On 9/11, the effort was cancelled as America looked to unite its divided house. But if his own people didn't want him then, why would the entire country want him now.

Politico was probably lurking the blog boards ... snagged the Jason Bonham rumor ... and ran with it ... simply because he wanted to believe it. More importantly, he needed something juicy to feed the talking heads to keep Politco looking wired. Emphasis mine.

I bet that's spot-on what really happened.

I reject Romney because everything about his personal, professional, and political life points to big grand schemes involving planning, control, and growth through benevolent "management," the answer to all ills. I think Romney is a clean, honest, a genuine goodie-two-shoes who means it. I also think at his heart is an executive with the executive's reserved but supreme sense of superiority and belief in his own talents to oversee and "manage" things properly.

Romney naturally would support government oversight, state or national, of how you, I, our employers, and if we have them, our employees, choose and pay for health insurance, and fine us heavily when we didn't follow their rules. Directly invasive management in your relationship with medical doctors. It is life or death, with a whole lot of dignity thrown in, in question. It is as big a threat to our freedom as illegal immigration. But to Romney as well as the entire Democrat party, it's a simple question of management experience.

Romney is the wrong guy.

How about McInsane drops out instead and gives his support to Fred before the South Carolina primary instead.

Or is the MSM incapable of grasping that concept?

As for Romney, he continues to set low expectations for integrity, and then fails to live up to them.

He can go blast off to the Mormon planet Kolob anytime now.

This sure has the stench of Team Romney. That bunch is so desperate, they will try anything. I will never ever in my life cast a vote for that bastard Romney. He and his sleazy campaign can go to hell.

Well said. My dad is for Thompson, but my mother has been wavering and leaning Romney (she doesn't really like any of the candidates this time around). I saw her Thursday, and we were discussing the election. She said "boy, that Romeny has turned out to be quite a sleaze, hasn't he?" And this is someone who had originally thought Romney might be the best of a bad lot.

I don't know if Romney spread this rumor about Thompson, but given the way Romney has conducted his campaign and the involvement of "MyManMitt," I think it's likely.

BTW, did anybody ever think that the leak might have been a stupid ploy by people who support thompson?

No, we think it was a stupid ploy by people against Thompson.

Second, the rumor may have been intended as a warning to fred supporters who might stay home — that if they didn’t show up in big numbers, Thompson might quit.

LMAO!!!....The Fred quitting rumors as well as the Fred's out of money rumors are coming from Mitt's house...

Another canard put out by the media to hurt Thompson is that he would throw his support to McQueeg if he (Fred) would pull out.

This is arrant nonsense. Fred knows very well that his conservative base would never support McQueeg so why would he ever ask them to do so?

Secondly, when did this "supporting McQueeg" business ever come out of Fred's mouth? I defy someone to show me a source on this.

To all those freepers who stupidly keep repeating this rumor as if it were a fact I say your FR education hasn't done a damn bit of good for you.

There was a thread today with an article from TownHall that was placing blame for the Politico article on Romney. The fact that there is no proof doesn’t matter to some. I feel that Politico put that out on their own, just to hurt him right before Iowa. Then Fred was asked about it in every MSM appearance and of course stated that it was totally rediculous and that he was NOT leaving the race. The whole thing was just to try to hurt Fred. But Fred did just fine anyway. GO FRED!

Thanks for the support, but I wouldn’t worry about it. Just consider the source. Anyway, I’d cut them some slack. Some days I pray for good news for Thompson, just to cut down on the negativity.

BTW, and I’ve hesitated to point this out, but you do know that the politico NEVER said that Thompson was going to drop out, nor did the people they quote say Thompson was going to drop out.

In fact, in the actual article, they made great pains to note that the people they were talking to were NOT talking for the campaign, or about a decision that had been reached.

Here’s the exact quote from the first paragraph “Several Republican officials close to Fred Thompson’s presidential campaign said they expect the candidate will drop out of the race within days if he finishes poorly in Thursday’s Iowa caucus.”

Note it says that “they expect”, not “the candidate has said”.

Maybe they DID expect he would drop out. The article gives multiple facts to support the OPINION that Fred might drop out.

At some point, this story which was about what other people THOUGHT fred would do got turned into a suggestion that the campaign had made a decision. But the article specifically says otherwise.

I don’t know if you know this, but Fred Thompson was on McCain’s Presidential campaign in 2000, they were good friends in the Senate, Fred worked closely with McCain on Campaign Finance Reform.

And this spring when we were all debating if Fred would run, it was commonly assumed that if McCain didn’t falter, Fred wouldn’t get in the race.

The number one thing we hate McCain for here, McCain/Feingold, Fred Thompson supported, and still says nice things about, except you wouldn't know that because we don't talk about it here.

Thompson stands up for McCain/Feingold

You'll have to go to the link and read the article, I'm not posting any of it here. Make up your own mind.

All Politico had to do to check the story was to call the Thompson campaign and ask. They KNEW the story was false, but they went with it anyway, because they were playing the DNC game.

We have a winner!

Amazing from the posts on this thread how many people still buy the enemedia crap.

They are interested in two things: (1)making sure Rudi McHuckster is nominated so the nanny staters win in any case and (2)ensuring a divided Republican electorate so nobody can beat their favorite.

I am surprised that Novak carries water for them, he usually does better.
