Massachusetts residents who remain uninsured in 2008 will begin facing monthly fines based on their age and income, according to new regulations unveiled by the Department of Revenue on Monday.
Here are how much different people may have to pay:
The highest fines are leveled at those earning three times the annual federal poverty level, or $30,636 for an individual. Individuals aged 27 or older who are over that income threshold will pay the top fine of $76 a month, or $912 a year.
Married couples earning more than $41,076 would each have to pay the top fine for a combined penalty of $1,824 if they are both uninsured for the entire year.
Those aged 18-26 earning more than $30,636 will pay $56 a month or $672 a year.
Individuals earning between $20,425 and $25,536 face a $420 fine for the year. Those earning between $15,325 and $20,424 face a $210 fine.
There are no fines for individuals earning less than $15,325.
No I don't. Massachusettes is compelling healthy people to become part of a system in order to subsidize the poor and unhealthy. They had a system that was totally broken and decided to fix it by forcing people into the new one. If the new rates are so wonderful, there shouldn't be any need for mandated coverage.
Please interpet.
“It’s about ending the free ride on taxpayers’ dollars.”
Exactly. The problem “fixed” by Romney’s solution is that no one can be turned away from a hospital for inability to pay. People who choose not to have private insurance will get treated. The “correct” fix to the problem would be to give people the opportunity to opt out of the free ambulance ride.
Since that isn’t going to happen, “fining” them what I assume is the equivalent of catostrophic care coverage is probably the “next best” thing.
Just my opinion. Your mileage may vary.
I think the greying of America has watered-down the contrast of what was once a black-and-white issue; the fiscal conservative resistance to universal health care.
It now seems to be more of a personal thing as even our politicians age as the permanence of office allows for a shift from one of growing more responsible to one of teetering on the doddering.
Even our list of potential nominees on the Republican side sees a choice between six men over 60 and only Huckabee younger than 55.
How many of the Geritol candidates are going to be around for a second term if they do manage to stay this side of that great nursing home in the sky come 2012?
I think we’ll see government health care sooner than later, it will likely happen this term no matter the outcome of this election.
Nice spam. Flip’s about as pro-life as Al Gore was back in 1988.
As I said, any of the Republicans would be better than Hillary. And you are sadly mistaken if you think the populace has any clue what Hillary’s full plans are. The only hint we have is that she once said we couldn’t possibly afford all of her ideas. That’s about as honest as she’s ever been with her big-government plans.
So there you have it.
Vote for whomever you believe you have to. But remember, we got 8 years of Clinton because of a third-party siphoning votes from the Republicans.
I’m no fan of Romney. But I’d vote for him to prevent Hillary or any of the Leftist Dhimmis from winning.
I’m sorry folks, I can’t see where Billing people for NOT having insurance is going to help ANYONE!
Most people that have insurance thru their employers, the ones that don’t (even though they make more money) don’t have the money left over to pay the HIGH RISING costs of health insurance. So my suggestion to any one who wants it is to move out of Mass. and tell them that if they want to improve the health insurance numbers (people with healthinsurance) then they NEED to start fining the insurance companies and Doctors who charge so much, and whodon’t cover most of the problems that people have!!
It seems to me that you’ve never been behind on any bills or had bills that you couldn’t pay, and that you make more clear money than the rest of us!!!!!!!!
I don’t believe ANYONE deserves a “free ride”, but sometimes I do believe that people need some help and can’t get it without intervention from the government or groups who CAN afford to be generous..
The biggest problem with healthcare today is that a Doctor who can’t fix the problem still gets paid like he cured you! If your mechanic didn’t fix your car would you still pay him?
