Romney officials approved clinic loan - Worcester facility to provide abortions

Former governor Mitt Romney's economic development agency granted initial approval to a tax-exempt bond last year for a Planned Parenthood clinic in Worcester that will provide abortions, just two months before he left office and began highlighting his antiabortion position as a presidential candidate.

Asked about the $5 million financial deal yesterday, the Romney campaign said the former governor was not aware it was under consideration when Planned Parenthood won preliminary approval in November 2006.

Romney repeatedly used the power of his office while governor to advance socially conservative positions, including restricting stem cell research, pushing abstinence-only sex education in schools, and vetoing a bill to increase access to emergency contraception in hospitals.

In the case of the abortion clinic funding deal, the Republican candidate's spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said Romney would have attempted to block it - if he had known about it.

"Mitt Romney is prolife," Fehrnstrom said. "He did not know about this loan. It was made by an agency that does not report to the governor. If it did, he would have told them not to do it."

In additon to providing abortion services, the 10,000-square-foot Planned Parenthood clinic planned for Worcester will offer Plan B emergency contraception, also known as the "morning after pill," which also is opposed by antiabortion advocates.

Jeffrey M. Berry, a political science professor at Tufts University, said he was surprised that Romney and his aides did not catch such a politically sensitive financial deal making its way through his economic development agency.

Can’t wait to hear from all those folks who berated me because I didn’t buy his Primary Conversion on abortion.

I thought Romney was the ALL KNOWING MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE governor, how could he not know about this, Myth knows everything. I guess 5 million dollars is just chump change to the Myth.

You don’t understand. Romney was a great business leader AND he talks about God a lot. You can’t expect him to be on top of things like what the state is paying for while he’s governor and bragging about what a great job he did overseeing the budget. You’re probably just biased against his religion. (sarc.)

UH....this happened while Romney was Governor.

Is he now exempt from what he did when he WAS governor because he isn't governor now?

“Lion” (his ass off) hails from the vast short-bus riding wing of Joe Isuzu Romneybots. To them, nothing is his fault and he walks on water and contest either of those points and he starts to fling his brown jell-o.

The only thing going for your team is mind-altering drugs, apparently, because you don't even know when your hero left office, as your previous post proves.

"Planned Parenthood won preliminary approval in November 2006."

Romney term expired: January 4, 2007

If the rest of you who know nothing but spin about Romney are equally ill-informed and lazy about your own candidate, the other candidates have little to worry about.

Both hit pieces on Romney are from Ken Maquire and Frank Phillips who cover the gay and lesbian issues, but Romney folks are not allowed to bring this to attention, it is only when the MSM is bias towards their guy than that is allowed, but when a reporter is bias towards Romney, to make that known is taboo from a few unyielding freepers!

The bias is becoming very obvious. Thanks for the info. I wish they would post some conmservative attack on Mitt so we could have a real discussion. All their stuff comes from the left....which is obviously trying to derail Mitt. In their haste to throne their candidate, all bets are off. What a strange political stage we have arranged.

I’ll bet you’re “lion.” Buddy K was a notorious liberal internet troll who polluted political newsgroups in the late ‘90s. What tipped me off is where you said you live (VA) and you even talk and act exactly like him. Scream “evidence ?”, “proof ?”, are promptly provided and you ignore it and post the same spam over and over again.

You are Buddy K.
