Another RINO to support Kerry was former Delaware Governor Russell Peterson, who was going to run for the U.S. Senate in 1972. Problem was, Congressman Pete DuPont also planned on running, so Richard Nixon persuaded the elderly Caleb Boggs to reluctantly seek another term, and he was narrowly defeated by the more aggressive Joseph Biden.
I thought I’d add a little history to the post.
Peterson already switched to the Dems in the late ‘90s. He sent me a signed autobiography personally when I corresponded with him. He was one of those that quite literally bent over backwards to appeal to Black voters during the time of the mass-scale radicalization. His Democrat opponent in 1972 for Governor, the DE House Minority Leader, Sherman Tribbitt, had done virtually nothing. When Peterson lost, along with Caleb Boggs, he went to the Black ministers and asked them, “How could you do this to me after all that I did for you ? Why didn’t your people vote for me ?” The ministers said, “We like you, but you’re still a Republican.” It just didn’t matter. Look what they did to Sammy Davis, Jr. that year for endorsing Nixon. I think Peterson just gave up and joined the maddening crowd. Of course, he never did win office again, and Pete DuPont knocked off Tribbitt 4 years later, so we made out pretty well for at least a little while...
