MEDIA FIREWORKS: MCCAIN PLEADS WITH NY TIMES TO SPIKE STORY

Thu Dec 20 2007 10:56:57 ET

Just weeks away from a possible surprise victory in the primaries, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz has been waging a ferocious behind the scenes battle with the NEW YORK TIMES, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, and has hired DC power lawyer Bob Bennett to mount a bold defense against charges of giving special treatment to a lobbyist!

McCain has personally pleaded with NY TIMES editor Bill Keller not to publish the high-impact report involving key telecom legislation before the Senate Commerce Committee, newsroom insiders tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

The paper's Jim Rutenberg has been leading the investigation and is described as beyond frustrated with McCain's aggressive and angry efforts to stop any and all publication.

MORE

The drama involves a woman lobbyist who may have helped to write key telecom legislation.

The woman in question has retained counsel and strongly denies receiving any special treatment from McCain.

Rutenberg, along with reporter David Kirkpatrick, has been developing the story for the last 6 weeks.

Rutenberg had hoped to break the story before the Christmas holiday, sources reveal, but editor Keller expressed serious reservations about jounalism ethics and issuing a damaging story so close to an election.

McCain campaign officials Rick Davis, Charlie Black and Mark Salter are also said to have met with the NEW YORK TIMES in an effort to halt publication.

I think it’s a little early to be throwing another one of our candidates under the bus, simply because of a partial story with few details that the New York Times is thinking about running a negative article about him right before the primaries when it sounds like both principles involved strongly deny the facts.

We didn’t used to be so quick to give the MSM credence. Remember 2004 and the “dissappearing weapons” story? Right before the election, New York Times, “such a serious story had to be told”, and then after the election, we’ve never heard another word about that “important” story.

Maybe McCain did something wrong, maybe he didn’t. I’m certain that if this was something about Thompson’s time in the Senate, we wouldn’t be writing his obituary before we had any of the evidence.

There had better be more to the story than this. A lobbyist's job is to try to influence the legislative process, and drafting proposed legislation is one of the ways they do this. BFD.

LOL.

If I was looking for a Republican to blame, I’d blame Mitt Romney. He benefits most.

Then again Dr. Paul might just be wilier than any of us ever imagined.Actually I'll just blame Clinton Inc. for this because they know McC could beat them.

McLame was also involved with the Keating 5, he has a long history of shady political deals, just like Rudy - both are toast.

Soros and his Open Society Institute are also heavy contributors to McCain's "Reform" PAC.

Recall that Soros has always favored "campaign finance reform". And got what he wanted in McCain-Feingold -- which empowewred him to buy the Democrat party.

Only time will tell.

The story seems to have gotten Sen. McCain’s knickers in a twist. He’s gone out and hired one of the most prominent, expensive, and well-reputed criminal defense attorneys in Washington, DC.

Perhaps he’s overreacting.

Or not.

What a bogus story...the Telecom bill was PULLED by Dirty Harry on Tuesday with help from Joe Biden! If you’ll remember it was going to give us cable users a CHOICE (i.e. dumping programs such as PBS and Bill Moyers) on what we could watch. Guess all you McCain haters get what you want now. Enjoy BET, MSNBC and CNN suckers!

The two positives about Senator McCain is that he is pro-life and pro-defense.

Although, McCain supports federal funding for embryonic stem cell research - Romney and Thompson do not. And McCain fought the President on Patriot Act powers, Gitmo procedures and "torture" definitions - Romney and Thompson did not.
