MEDIA FIREWORKS: MCCAIN PLEADS WITH NY TIMES TO SPIKE STORY

Thu Dec 20 2007 10:56:57 ET

Just weeks away from a possible surprise victory in the primaries, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz has been waging a ferocious behind the scenes battle with the NEW YORK TIMES, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, and has hired DC power lawyer Bob Bennett to mount a bold defense against charges of giving special treatment to a lobbyist!

McCain has personally pleaded with NY TIMES editor Bill Keller not to publish the high-impact report involving key telecom legislation before the Senate Commerce Committee, newsroom insiders tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

The paper's Jim Rutenberg has been leading the investigation and is described as beyond frustrated with McCain's aggressive and angry efforts to stop any and all publication.

MORE

The drama involves a woman lobbyist who may have helped to write key telecom legislation.

The woman in question has retained counsel and strongly denies receiving any special treatment from McCain.

Rutenberg, along with reporter David Kirkpatrick, has been developing the story for the last 6 weeks.

Rutenberg had hoped to break the story before the Christmas holiday, sources reveal, but editor Keller expressed serious reservations about jounalism ethics and issuing a damaging story so close to an election.

McCain campaign officials Rick Davis, Charlie Black and Mark Salter are also said to have met with the NEW YORK TIMES in an effort to halt publication.

Dear NeoCaveman,

Thought you’d get a kick out of that!

“If I was looking for a Republican to blame, I’d blame Mitt Romney. He benefits most.”

Not necessarily.

I don’t think that Mr. McCain’s candidacy is long for this world, with or without this alleged scandal. If Sen. McCain came in second in New Hampshire, and then tended to fade after that, then he would have the effect of blocking out other candidates who might benefit from coming in second there, and who might last longer in the campaign. Thus, one could see a second-place finish by Sen. McCain as being to Mr. Romney’s benefit.

“Actually I’ll just blame Clinton Inc. for this because they know McC could beat them.”

Actually, I think that several of the top-tier Republicans could beat Mrs. Clinton. If Mr. Obama or some other Democrat doesn’t beat her first.

Of the top candidates, I think that only Mr. Giuliani would likely lose to Mrs. Clinton.

The finding that they can take a single cell from an embryo and not harm it at all has really changed that debate.

Dear meandog,

“Guess all you McCain haters get what you want now.”

I don’t think I’m a McCain hater. In fact, if he’s the nominee, I’ll vote for him. I can’t say the same for Mr. Giuliani, Mr. Romney, or Mr. Paul.

I don’t think we really know just what the story is, just yet. All we know is that the New York Times is going to print something, and Sen. McCain is so upset by it that he’s hired one of the top defense attorneys in the United States.

We’ll have to see if Mr. McCain’s assessment of the story is as bogus as you believe it to be.

That's the most hilarious thing I've read in quite a while. Whatever the reasons Keller has reservations, the idea that "journalism ethics" and "issuing a damaging story so close to an election" are are of concern to the Old Grey Whore when the target is a republican is a total joke.

Is THIS the big 'sex scandal' about a presidential frontrunner that all of the media knows about but all the journalists are worried about printing?

Sounds familliar. It’s about a ‘sitting senator’ and leading presidential candidate sex scandal.

Things just got a whole lot more interesting.

It is not which GOP candidate, it is Hillary since McCain always does the best against her in the head to head matchups.

The absence of Sir Slickenstein from this race has really cut into the sex scandal reportage market.

You know you're reaching when the pregnancy of an Edwards' staff member makes the front page of the National Enquirer.

Ping to 108. If this is as big as it sounds, it would really shake things up a lot.

If it helps sinks McTraitor’s ship, I hope they publish it.

His resurrection in the polls is scary. Of all the Repubs running, he is probably the least likely to get any support from me, even if Hitlery is the alternative.

McCrazy never had a shot at President - especially after
amnesty. What this is really about is knocking him out
of consideration for VP - and I say GOOD!

I think I’ll wait before reacting to this story.

McCain is NOT someone I like but clearly he’s been moving up in N.H. and that isn’t going to be well received by some candidates.

Wasn’t his second wife charged with stealing drugs from Red Cross packages? Maybe the story is about her drug habit.
