Just to clarify a couple of things:

Project Mercury began on October 7, 1958.
The Apollo program started in 1960 (but did not really get going until Kennedy’s speech in May 1961).

Hillary’s still a liar, but let’s keep our facts straight

The Apollo program started in 1960 (but did not really get going until Kennedy’s speech in May 1961).

While Kennedy, in his speech of May 25, 1961 before Congress , proposed landing an American on the Moon by the end of the decade, and announced his intention to fund such a program, I don't think Apollo was yet named - according to NASA, the Apollo program ran from 1963 -1972.

Wikipedia gives different dates, but 'wiki' is notorious for errors -

I lived in Cocoa Beach back during that time (my brother was a space electronics engineering specialist) when Cocoa Beach was a sleepy little 2 highway town - with a couple motels, one being the Ramada Inn where the Mercury Astronauts hung out when in town. (No Ron Jon's!) One of my son's now works at the Space Center - 20 years now -
