I acknowledge a woman’s right to controll her own uturus too (though it shouldn’t be put in that language), I just don’t support her right to kill those human beings in her care..it’s simple common-sense!

The view on immigration among Southern Republicans could not be more different. Tinged with classic Southern racism, the good-ole-boy Republican considers the immigrant worker a threat to American sovereignty.

Wow. What a jerk. "classic Southern racism", huh.

I wonder if the Democrats and the media realize how SICK AND TIRED white people, and southern white people, are of being called racists and bigots for the past 30 years?

There's some truth to it. Northern Republicans are liberals who care mainly about controlling federal spending. Southern Republicans are conservatives who are passionate about a raft of cultural issues: faith, guns, and immigration. They are as different as day and night. The only thing has united them in the past is an aversion to the Democrats.

but without the race card, the democrats have nothing left. The People will figure this out, soon enough. It will be difficult not to figure this out. It will be staring everyone in the face, in anger, as this author is attempting to draw someone into a fight through his own anger.

Probably about as SICK AND TIRED as the Mormons are of being called non-Christian and a cult for the last 30 years.

What in the first two paragraphs could you possibly take issue with? It could be the description of the Goldwater-Rockefeller split of 40 years ago, but is relevant today. On immigration and many other things, there IS a split.

“On immigration and many other things, there IS a split.”

Not with this northern Republican. We agree on all the issues, though maybe not with priorities. I don’t see that as being a North-South issue, though.

Sounds like the author hates BOTH the so-called classes of Republicans (northern prep-schoolers and southern down home boys).

“On immigration and many other things, there IS a split.”

Yes, but it’s not a North-South split.

As someone from the North, I feel closest in political philosophy to men like Jeff Sessions of Alabama, Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, and Fred Thompson of Tennessee; all Southerners.

On the other hand there are other Southerners such as Mel Martinez, Lindsay Graham, and Mike Huckabee who I largely disagree with.

In my opinion the split in the Republican party is between real and fake conservatism. The fake conservatives have been running the party, and the real conservatives among the party rank and file are fed up with it.

He does. Northern Republicans are preppy WASPs who look down at working class folks and Southern Republicans are working class stiffs who easily mingle with the NASCAR crowd. So they are culturally different.

Doesn’t compute for me personally. I have whites, blacks, and asians in my family. I was born 300 miles south of the Canadian border way “out west”. I am not a New Englander nor am I a southerner. But I AM a cradle Republican.

“Need further evidence? Look at the GOP presidential candidates. Frontrunners Giuliani and Romney are classic Northern Preppie Republicans. They are gay-tolerant, support reasonable gun control measures and acknowledge (or have acknowledged) a woman’s right to control her own uterus.”

“These positions are utter anathema to Good-ole-boy Republicans, who revel in truck-and-gun culture and see homosexuality as a bigger threat to national security than rising sea levels. Only Fred Thompson appears ready to hit all the notes Southern Republicans want to hear. Thompson’s campaign attests to the looming disconnect between Northern and Southern conservatives.”

Notice that he basically singled out Thompson as being the empitome of a Southern Conservative. Fred must scare the bejebbers out of the “elitist left” this guy represents.

However, there is a “grain” of truth about the disconnect. Although I’m not sure it is necessarily a North vs South one. For instance, the current President Bush is what the writer calls a “Northern Preppie”, but he doesn’t support abortion, homosexuals and gun control. So the stereotypes are horrible inconsistent here.

What the author fails to reveal is that the disagreement isn't "Northern" vs. "Southern", as his observation discounts the Midwest and the West, which are certainly aligned with the South, at least in regard to Conservatism.

It is more a matter of "Northern" and "Left Coast" RINOs against the will of the rest of the country.

From his description I probably ought to be from Mississippi, at least given my family background, but I consider myself a Reagan Republican and I’m from NH...and was at one time the largest contributor to Jesse Helms from my state. Then again, I have seriously considered moving to Mississippi, so perhaps he has a point.
