ANNAPOLIS — Anne Arundel County has taken the lead in Maryland on cracking down on illegal aliens.
County Executive John R. Leopold, a Republican, has already required Anne Arundel agencies to check the documents of contract workers and is now working with federal immigration officials.
"I think the issue nationally is obviously a priority issue for many Americans," he said this week. "We want to discourage illegal immigration and encourage legal immigration."
Mr. Leopold has pulled funding in the county budget for social programs to illegal aliens and will put together a plan that helps employers verify citizenship.
Federal immigration officials said Anne Arundel has surpassed Maryland's other 22 counties and Baltimore City in efforts to resolve problems with illegal aliens.
The county has gone "above and beyond the normal course of business," said James Dinkins, special agent in charge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Baltimore field office. "They're taking it another step, and I have to say it's an outstanding avenue — to look at people who are receiving benefits and contracts and receiving local tax dollars."
Mr. Dinkins said his office focuses largely on high-profile crime by illegal aliens, including gang activity and sex crimes.
ICE agents coordinated with Anne Arundel police last month to round up nine illegals who authorities say were involved in underage drinking and the sale of illegal drugs at a Mexican restaurant and bar in Glen Burnie called Viva La Raza.

I’m not white. Just for kicks, I should open a place called Glory to the White Race (I’m cracking up as I type this) and see what happens. Doesn’t everything I say and do come, ipso facto, with the blessings of the ACLU?
Many Illegals and they would leave as soon as they had received treatment, without signing out or signing anything. Just disappear. Many from auto accidents - no license or insurance. If they came in on a stretcher they did not have to talk to the police. By the time the cops got to the ED they were gone. If they came in on a back board they would clear themselves and leave.
Gave them the same treatment and care that we would anyone. Even with a professional translator for medical terminology issues. We don’t ask why or who in the ED just treat a person.
Still it was a burden as they were non compliant with any regime or instructions.
Mrs. LC & I were in Annapolis for a weekend last month. Great town, but there’s a serious drug problem. we were walking baack to the hotel after diner at around 10PM, and we were a little bit uncomfortable. As soon as we walked out of the restaurant, we were tailed by about 6 scary looking guys who were hanging out on te corner. A friend who lived down there told me about the big drug problems in that aprt of town. too bad, too, because that’s where three nice hotels are.

A few years ago the local Orlando media got their panties all in a bunch because a bar just north of the city had the audacity to post a sign at the entrance of the bar that said 'NO COLORS'.
Of course without actually seeing the sign word raced around town that a bar had a sign up that said 'NO COLOREDS'. And even then it was lost on the idiots in the press.
With the media pounding down their door, microphones thrust in their faces, and reporters shouting, "How can you justify posting such a sign in your doorway?" "Easy", replied the owner,"I'm not singling out anyone, but anybody that comes to my bar with (gang) COLORS on is not welcome."
Yes, they felt stupid afterwards.
