Hunter shoots and kills family dog

LOWELL, Mass. -- A local dog owner is devastated after her dog was shot and killed.

Michelle Verville was walking her dog, Smokey, in the Lowell-Dracut State Forest last week when she heard a gun shot. Smokey, a 4-year-old Labrador retriever, yelped and Verville noticed that her dog had been shot in the stomach.

"I just stayed there with him and told him that it was ok, and that we loved him and that he was a good dog, and then he passed," Verville said.

it is legal to hunt for deer in State parks from Nov. 26 to Dec. 8.

According to Verville, shortly after Smokey was shot a hunter came out of the woods, where it is legal to hunt for deer in State Parks from Nov. 26 to Dec. 8. The man claimed that he did not shoot the dog and left without trying to help the fatally injured canine.

State Environmental Police are investigating the incident.

I wouldn’t call some of the yahoos that I’ve seen “hunters”. What qualified hunter shoots so close to a home that everyone inside ducks? What qualified hunter chases a deer across a 4 lane highway? Just because they have a license and a gun doesn’t mean they are a good hunter.

I think this “hunter shoots dog” thread flushed out a lot of liberals impersonating conservatives here!

I think you ought to reread the thread.

The real hunters aren’t likely to leave as lasting an impression as the idiots.

The idiots usually leave a highly negative impression, and will be remembered in exclusion to all else.

**************

Exactly right. When have we ever read a story about a responsible hunter?

You won’t.
Not unless you speak to the hunters on FR.

“Then you must live in a hell hole then. I am a deer hunter(not dear hunter)”

Sorry for the typo....I knew I would raise a few hackles with the hunters on here.
I did not say that all deer hunters are scum.
I stated that where I lived the deer hunters are the worst.
Fortunately I left that area and do not plan to return.

We have five acres, which is heavily wooded and when running our dogs near the back of the property, I put them in this:

For those who don't want the expense of an orange coat, or don't have easy access to one, an inexpensive orange stocking hat, the top cut and hemmed, worn on the neck gives decent visability.

Good idea, although the coat is available online from Cabela’s for $12.99.

It's much better, and it makes sense to think ahead and order though lots of people don't. I've got Cabela's neoprene coats which are great and add some warmth. I'm always surprised that even outdoors stores generally don't stock orange for dogs.

Oh am so sad for this owner and her beloved dog. A beautiful Lab. I wish I could reverse that time for her. This breaks my heart.

And we have idiots who hunt within 500 yards of farms and residences, blasting farm animals and pets because, you guessed it, -”It must be a deer/bear/etc!”

What are you some peta clown, that has to be one of the dumbest statements I have read on FR. Do you think if you have enough money to by a mobile home lot next door to some farmers woods, he can not longer hunt within 500 yards of your property. If the dog had been on his leash he would still be alive.

Is there a certain distance that someone can mistake a dog for a deer?

Any distance at which they fail to be sure of their target.

No distance at which they make sure they are shooting at what they should be shooting at.

If they are unable to tell what they are shooting at with certainty, they shouldn't shoot.

I walk this park every day with a BIG lab (we call him our deer dog). During deer season we only walk a paved road that runs through it. Last week we crossed a guy hunting from the road. I came home and ordered the biggest safety vest they had from gundogs.com... Its to small. Brought it to a seamstress yesterday to be modified. And no he’s not fat, he’s chunky like his parents.

I don’t think I will go back there till after the season closes...

Me too! LOL Sorry for that lady and her dog tho.
I never heard of being able to shoot in state parks, why isn;t there restricted areas so no person is shot either by mistake of a dumb hunter or one with a bad aim ;)
