Rudy Panic set in for many Republicans this week, with conservative leaders both nationally and in Iowa concluding they need to settle on a single champion to prevent Rudolph W. Giuliani from winning the GOP presidential nomination.
They fear that victory by the socially liberal former New York mayor could permanently shatter the largely successful coalition of social, religious, economic and national defense conservatives that, more often than not, has worked electoral magic for Republican candidates at all levels.
"The main driving force behind all of that is a belief that Rudy Giuliani is positioned to win the nomination and a belief that, and I describe it this way, the four most central planks in our Republican platform would be sacrificed in the process: life, marriage, guns, border security," said Rep. Steve King, Iowa Republican. He said the calls and e-mails in Iowa grew "utterly intense in the last week" as Republicans urged one another to settle on an anti-Rudy candidate.
A new poll showing a statistical tie between Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee for the Jan. 3 Iowa first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses is fueling the frenzy.
"What conservatives have to realize is that Giuliani is now relying on Mike Huckabee to take his most viable opponent, Mitt Romney, down in Iowa, and that anyone voting for him there in the caucuses will be inadvertently, and ironically, helping the New Yorker," David A. Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union, said earlier this week in a surprise endorsement of Mr. Romney.

“There are many of us Freepers that have been Fredheads from the time he was mentioned as a potential candidate. Glad to see Rush came around to our side!”
Actually this is unique, although we figured that naturally Rush would prefer Fred, we also knew that Rush doen’t endorse in primaries.
With Rush you just have to listen for his subtle clues, but this time Rush stepped out and roared his message out into the clear.
Romney can beat Hildy but she would crush Huckabee.
Fred Thompson is indeed the most conservative of the “top tier” but he still is not a conservative.
I heard what Rush had to say about Thompson so I emailed him to tell him that talking conservative during an election season is not the same as being a conservative. I informed Rush that Duncan Hunter is the real conservative. I expect Rush to change his tune now that he has been set straight.
“And no, its not the RNC orchestrating it. It is the voters. If the voters want Huckabee to progress, it needs to NOT be voters from Romney fueling the advance. “
Tragically it is too late, for the first time Mitt Romney has slid down to 10 points in Rasmussin’s national poll today.
“I expect Rush to change his tune now that he has been set straight.”
I’m sure that he will jump right on that.
Romney must be stopped too.
Huckabee can't win the nomination. He can only boost Giuliani's chances of winning it.
Ummm, ok, yeah, I'm sure he's going to get right back to you on that.
LOL! Do ya think? He hasn’t answered me back yet. I am starting to get worried.
Record the show Monday, you will want to play the tape for your grandkids.
Cold, bold, incisive commentary from a "Keene" mind.
I’m a subscriber, I won’t have to record it. I will be listening, though. I do expect Rush to announce that after hearing from upsdriver that he has since changed his mind.
Dang did I miss another meeting? :)
A mind so “Keene” that it set aside his own group’s ranking of Toomey (97%) to endorse Arlen Spector (47%).
More bovine wast from the mittmuts. And I agree, The best advice would be to ignore, Rudy, Romney and Huck all together. Their are liberal. I agree.
Every now and then there are callers to Rush’s show who encourage Rush and all conservatives to fully support just Duncan Hunter, but it hasn’t helped Duncan one bit so far.
