My husband works in the Oil business and were looking into solar panels. How will solar panels replace your personal consumption of oil?

How will solar panels replace your personal consumption of oil? Haven't seen the sun in several days. There is a general yellowish glow to the south and the sun might be there for a couple hours around local noon, but it wouldn't get above the trees. So, even if I put up five acres of solar panels they would be producing zero watts these days.

It won’t help with the personal consumption of gasoline, but if we use the panels to heat water, it will cut down on the amount of natural gas we use. (We have a natural gas hot water heater.) We’ve also replaced one of our SUVs with a small gas efficient car. We have to keep one SUV for my husband’s business.
