Bernie Dolan Wants You to Know About Duncan Hunter
Campaigns & Elections ^ | 11/21/07 | Beth LaMontagne

Posted on 11/21/2007 9:50:02 AM PST by pissant

New Hampshire voters haven’t seen or heard much of presidential candidate and U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., this campaign season, but Pittsfield resident Bernie Dolan wants to change that. An engineer who moved to New Hampshire three years ago from Massachusetts, Nolan has taken on a volunteer role as the deputy New Hampshire campaign director.

Nolan has no previous campaign experience, but he’s also never been inspired to get involved by anyone like Hunter has inspired him. In a recent interview with NHpols.com on his car ride home from work, Nolan talks about his new role with the Hunter campaign, his past political leanings (he’s been a fan of both Ronald Reagan and John F. Kennedy), and about Hunter’s chances in the New Hampshire primary.

Have you ever been involved in politics before?

“Other than voting and that sort of thing, I’ve never been involved in a campaign. Then again, I’ve never come across somebody who has a set of core beliefs that are very much like mine. … Whether moving away [from] government-sponsored health care, or politicians who talk about government this and government that, [Hunter wants to] let the individual do it.”

What made you decide to go with Duncan Hunter?

“The biggest reason was that I didn’t see anybody else who even came remotely close to [Hunter’s views]. Compare him with what I see on the Democratic side, when I see [the Democrats] speak of nationalized health care, I get scared. If you look at any endeavor the government tried to run, they haven’t done a good job. Take a look at Social Security. If a company ran Social Security like the government does, they not only would be fired, but criminal charges would be filed against them.”

When did you take on this role as volunteer state director?

“I stumbled across his Web site … and I said, ‘yes, I like what I see,’ I signed up [on the site] and said ‘I can volunteer to do a couple things.’ I got a few responses asking me, can I do this, can I do that. [I told them] I am married and have three children and a job that requires some travel.”

What have you been doing in the state to get out the word out about Hunter?

“Basically, I’m trying to get the boundaries of the job down. I’m relatively new to this. I’m trying to get [in touch with] the NHGOP, there is a Meetup group organizing. It is relatively small now because people don’t know much about him. I guess that would be my job.

“I’m sure there is a certain amount of people who are looking at Mr. Hunter who are probably very similar [to me]. … There is no big campaign budget to allow you to hire people to organize and stand at the corner with different signs. Everyone is living their lives.”

As a volunteer, how do you squeeze in the time to get work done for Hunter?

“You conduct interviews on the drive home and hope you doesn’t say something bad. You try to work around it.”

Are you in close contact with the national campaign?

“Yes. There was a lot of e-mail going back and forth today. Different media outlets are looking for a direct quote on different issues. … I want it to come directly [from] the candidate himself. I’m not going to pretend to speak for somebody. … I’m not going to say, ‘this is his stance.’ It’s not my place to do so. … I will say that everything I’ve read, if you look at his voting record, he has a very consistent record you can track. In my opinion he’s the best person for the job.”

Hunter is somewhat of a long-shot candidate. What do you consider a successful run in New Hampshire for him?

“I would be real happy seeing him win New Hampshire. If our campaign can come together quickly -- what are we voting, next week? -- I’m not playing for second place or third place. It is my opinion that the more people find out more about Mr. Hunter, the more they are going to say he’s the one to lead this nation forward. … To play for second, that doesn’t work for me.”

Have you wrote your editor’s letter yet for Duncan Hunter, folks?

Check out Post #18 for a really good example.

Great letter, AuntB, covers a lot, and your catchy first sentence will make folks want to read the rest of the letter:

“The Presidential Candidate you’re not supposed to know about”

Here’s mine from this week in my local paper.

I just sent an email to the editor of a local socialist rag. I took the liberty of modifying your letter to fit the 200 word limit. I hope you don't mind. It will be interesting to see if they publish it.

Please feel free! It’s so difficult to tell about this man’s accomplishments in 5000 words let alone 200. Good luck.

Thanks pissant. Duncan Hunter is the only one that matches my values too. All the others are about promotion and will pretty much say what you want to hear. Duncan not only tells it like it is; he will tell you what he is going to do.

“Most of my family lives in NH and I told them that DH is the best man for the job.”

Maybe you can get them to write an editor’s letter, and/or call a local talk show.

Great example of an editor’s letter for Hunter is post #18.

P.S.

Here’s a bit that you can e-mail to your family, if you wish:

Duncan Hunter is the ONLY candidate who thoroughly understands the Communist China threat.

Duncan Hunter is the ONLY candidate who had a fence built at the San Diego border (which greatly reduced crime, including drug trafficking in San Diego).

Duncan Hunter is the ONLY candidate that authored the bill for a fence from CA thru TX which was signed into law.

Duncan Hunter is the ONLY candidate that has a son that did three tours in the Middle East, two tours in Iraq (including Fallujah) and the third tour in Afghanistan.

Hunter and Brownback (but Brownback dropped out) were the only presidential candidates to attend the pro-life march in D.C., Hunter fought the aclu to keep the Mt. Soledad cross, Hunter fought to allow students to pray in schools, and President Reagan even called Hunter and praised him for his fight, and Hunter introduces the personhood-at-conception law each year.

Duncan Hunter was Chairman of the Armed Services Committee (when the Republicans had the majority), gave us ABS deployed in Alaska, and Hunter built up the defense that Bill Clinton tore down, and got equipment and weapons to protect our troops, and our country.

Hunter’s voting record...........

I believe that the main reason Hunter has not caught on is that he is a “representative”, not a senator. Most Americans consider a “representative” relatively unimportant, but not so a “senator” even though they of course make the same pay. People just won’t vote for a representative for President. Haven’t done so since Garfield

I agree. I think DH Freepers are really starting to pull together. You don't know how right you are about the otherwise part of your first statement. The FR poll now has Duncan Hunter ahead of Thompson but the more telling news lies in the details. Check them out and you'll notice non members favor Hunter by a wider margin than members.

I saw on tv that the Evangelicals (I think it was in Iowa) are supporting Huckabee 2 to 1 over Romney, but they don’t seem to know that Duncan Hunter is just as pro-life or more so. Despite Huckabee’s lack of $$, he is doing very well in the polls, and I believe the values voters have a lot to do with it.

I called Dr. Richard Land’s show to tell how strong Duncan Hunter is on the conservative social issues (as well as other conservative issues), and the next week when a caller talked w/Dr. Land about Huckabee, Dr. Land said Duncan Hunter is just as pro-life as Huckabee. I don’t know if my call had anything to do with it, but I’m doing everything I can to get the word out.

Religious conservatives are a very large voting block.

we can "pull this SOB off" (winning the primaries, that is, for Duncan)

It will be a tough nut to crack but what with Thompson's faltering, and further exposes on Romney and Huckabee, there will be a vacuum to fill that certainly Giuliani and McCain won't be able to do.

Duncan Hunter is a candidate you can be proud to be dedicated to. He deserves the support and is the man we need to be the next President. As for all this nonsense about how we should abandon our support for someone who is obviously the best, it is the others who need to think about the fact that most of the candidates they are supporting, most of them PREFER Duncan Hunter! Now what does that say?! And for that matter, Duncan Hunter has not LOST support in the polls like some others and has not been a disappointment in how he has conducted himself in interviews or speeches and when with people. Hunter is the man to support.

Duncan Hunter's solid gold. The man without the big machine is the best man in the race. He said himself that he had no handlers. Unfortunately other candidates have a surplus of handlers and are clueless on what they really think.

Do we want bumbling handlers running the country? I know that I certainly do not.
