If you're interested in a fuel efficient vehicle, why in the hell would you drop $17,000 on this glorified go kart when there are other options that get you 40 MPG or close to it?
A Honda Civic is at or near this price range and you get two more whole seats!
This is what we’ll be driving if Clinton and the RATS have their way. And.....we’ll probably be paying $6-$7 bucks a gallon. Meanwhile the RAT politicians will all be driving around in SUV’s, just like the Commies in Russia did.
They better have lots of airbags. If you were in an accident much over 30 mph what was left of you would be buried in your car.
What a bunch of fools. My 2002 Saturn gets between 35-40 MPG on the highway (and so did my 1992 Saturn). Except when they start putting ethanol into the mix, then it is only 30-35.
Reminds me a lot of the old GooGoo Mobiles in Germany in the late 50’s. The front end was the single door to the vehicle.
Ok, here’s a serious question (sort of) - How many Smart Cars does it take to tow a 5,000 lb. boat to the lake for a weekend of boating?
That’s the ugliest car to grace the highways since the Pacer. The Aztec held the previous record for butt-ugliness since the Pacer. It’ll be a century, I reckon, before we see something AS ugly as the Pacer.
I don’t get it either, my VW Jetta Turbo diesel gets the same or better mpg, has 4 seats, a trunk, some margin for safety in a crash and has a similar pricetag.
That tin can gets only 40 mpg? I bought a 1996 Honda Civic hatchback with a 1.6 litre engine and 5-speed transmission. I routinely get 40+ mpg at 70 mph.
The ironic thing to me is that my $800 Geo Metro gets 55+ mpg at 55 and does it without the benefit of 17+ years of subsequent enviro-engineering.
40 MPG SMART Car Arrives in U.S. — my question is, “How did it get here? Does it float too?”
In this case, “Smart Car” can be translated to:
“Death Trap”.
That might well be among the ugliest vehicles to reach our shores in 3 decades. I’m surprised that GM didn’t design it!

They’d sell a lot of those if they cut the price in half, but - as you say - for $17K you can get almost the same mileage and a lot more car.
Those are cool cars for cities. I’ve seen them in Europe and they make a ton of sense for a place like London.
Is this another “Designed by OPEC” cars?
I live in America, I want big, I want EGO big, i want something that absolutely screams, “Don’t Mess with me!” type of big.
This NOT the future, future cars will have an abundance of power, 500HP fuel celled engines are everyday practical instead of these Rube Goldberg Model T’s.
We saw plenty of these on a couple of Euro vacations. My recollection was that in Italy, they are only allowed in the city and are denied access to the Autostrada.
Exactly! My ‘07 Honda Accord gets 37 MPG so where’s the advantage?
I’d rather have this instead:

And it’s a freakin’ MACH 1 version instead. If I wasn’t already insuring two other cars this puppy would be all mine...
