Universities' Growing Liberal Bias is Documented
New York Sun ^ | November 14, 2007 | Annie Karni

Conservative professors must publish more than their liberal peers to be competitive for the same university jobs and promotions, according to new reports. At a conference sponsored by the American Enterprise Institute today in Washington, D.C., researchers from across the country will present 18 papers that they say document the growing liberal bias in academia.

"Universities are tilting to the left, and it starts at the student level and goes all the way through to the hiring level and even to the promotion level," the vice president and director of the National Research Initiative at AEI, Henry Olsen, said. "This is a real problem, not anecdote masquerading as fact."

In departments such as sociology and anthropology, "progressive" and "liberal" professors outnumber "conservative" and "libertarian" faculty members by a margin of at least 20 to 1, according to a new study by a husband and wife research team from George Mason University and the Swedish Institute for Social Research. The findings are based on dozens of national surveys about faculty voter behavior, policy views, and voter registration.

Some professors said a liberal bias is damaging the intellectual vitality of campus life, and they discourage conservative students from pursuing doctorate degrees in the humanities.

"If my students show conservative bias, I steer them away from the academy," a professor of English at the University of Virginia, Paul Cantor, said. "They have no future — they will not get jobs. If they want to teach traditional works in a traditional matter, they have no future in an English department today."

A film documenting the liberal slant is temporarily shut down due to a University law suit.

Oh, those free speech loving liberals. [puke]

Is Paul Cantor a conservative or a liberal? The answer will mightily color his quote here.

As I was finishing my undergrad degree in History, I mentioned to a professor that I expected to continue on in grad school. He took me aside and said, "It's pointless. With your politics, all the doors will be closed to you. It will be a huge struggle and the chances of you having an academic career are virtually nil."

That was about 20 years ago. I suspect that things are worse now.

He must be a liberal; or else he’s a weenie conservative.

The good thing about all of this is that liberals underestimate the law of unintended consequences. We have many examples of flaming liberals whose children are arch-conservatives. The same principle applies here.

These liberals are actually churning out more conservatives than they could possibly imagine. The thing that liberal professors don’t understand is that just because students regurgitate what you require for a grade doesn’t mean that they actually believe it.

The students are just playing you for a fool and not the other way around.

Doh!

It sounds as though he’s genuinely trying to do his students a favor by not wasting their lives. I have to question his motives, though. Lord knows it’s lonely being a conservative academic, except in business schools.

One of my daughter’s friends is at Bloom, so I looked at Brasch’s personal website. He seems more ooh-ooh-me-too, tag-along, mindless liberal than cretin. What might you know about him?

Yes, with the students that are trained up from childhood by parents who are aware of the threat of indoctrination, your assertion is true.

But too many parents release their kids into the wild without an effective shield against this crap.

It has always been the standard procedure for the Communist
to first take over education.
It takes a very short period of time to turn a young skull full of mush into a rabid Marxist fool.

I would NEVER subject a young child to the public school.
As for university, I have no idea for a solution.
It seems to be a lost cause.

He is a horrible human. Our local rag newspaper the “Hazleton Standard Speaker” has him doing a Bush hating column once a week. He has written books “The Joy of Sax” about Bill Clinton. He is a left over American Hating Hippie. I just despise him.

He also “loves code pink”. This bastard indoctrinates the skulls full of mush that attend his classes.

Question for the learned here. Although the liberal bias of state universities and private liberal arts colleges is well documented, has anyone documented any liberal bias in engineering colleges or business colleges? Just curious.

“bastard indoctrinates the skulls full of mush” — he does what he can, but economic reality will soon undo much of his work. Many of the “mush skulls” that start working and paying taxes to support him will soon begin some real lessons.

Business school faculty vote reliably for the rats. The faculty are not so reflexively left but they still detest Bush and Cheney. I have tried to explain that Bush and Cheney are fine representatives of business schools. Bush is the first MBA president and Cheney is the first CEO vice-president. Their detesting for Bush and Cheney is not due to the Iraq war. I recall a dinner during Thanksgiving weekend 2000 with business faculty. Everyone at the table was deriding Bush and calling him a stupid cheater. Business school faculty want government funding for universities. They know that the rats deliver.

Bush and calling him a stupid.

That is disturbing because calling Bush Stupid is like arguing with a two year old. If they cannot produce an argument as to why they hate Bush except for “stupid” please let me know the name of the college so I can keep it off my list.
