ISLAMABAD, Pakistan ( Pakistani police backed by armored vehicles surrounded the Islamabad home of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto on Friday, and a security official said she had been placed under house arrest ahead of a major protest.

Interesting that at the same time, over in Myanmar, Mrs. Aung San Su Kyi is cutting deals with the junta!
Uh oh.
Didn’t Bhutto try to arrest Musharraf yesterday?
Masharraf has withdrawn forces from the tribal areas near Afghanistan and India to deal with the increasing unrest. If the state of emergency was declared to deal with the increasing terrorist threat, why is he withdrawing forces from areas where they plot and live?
A warlord in South Waziristan has instituted his own tax system and has a 30,000 man army allied with the Taliban. Musharraf is still cutting deals with these guys, doing prisoner swaps and removing checkpoints.
surprise surprise from Pakistan...
I haven’t been following the news in Burma closely but I find it hard to believe that Aung San Su Kyi would be doing anything unethical. She has bravely resisted the Junta for years - why would she compromise now?
:’) A group of conspirators tried to snuff her out when she arrived in Pakistan, and the situation hasn’t improved with age. This is for her safety. The last thing Musharraf needs is for her supporters to be tinkled off about her murder. Thanks Fred.
Hmmm!
Thanks for the ping!
OK....it’s a smart thing then....
Id hit it
That’s a good point. If she’s murdered that would only deepen the chaos. Too bad Musharaf looks more like he’s trying to consolidate power. He can’t afford to have her dead(for now). Some gesture of of political consideration to Bhutto could settle things down some. The chaos there, or worse, a power vacuum; only plays to the Taliban & Al-Qaeda. This place is the most dangerous place on Earth right now.
Per BBC:She has not been formally placed under house arrest, and police say the measure at her residence in Islamabad is for her own safety.
“She’s free to go anywhere but if she tries to go to the rally she’ll be stopped,” said an anonymous government official quoted by Reuters news agency.
The police chief of Rawalpindi, Saud Aziz, meanwhile warned that up to eight suicide bombers were in the city ahead of Friday’s planned protest.
“Naturally they will target big public meetings like what you have seen in Karachi,” Mr Aziz told the AFP news agency.
...and I doubt that she would have returned to Pakistan without Musharraf’s invite on the QT. :’)
Just another Day in the Life of Peaceful Muslims.
I suppose following Bush’s strategy of “over there, not over here” it is better for the “fly paper” effect to do its work.
It is usually so hard to discern the good ones from the bad ones, that it seems positive if they just keep killing each other.
Sooner or later the bad guys in the tribal areas should be smacked real hard. We have waited and waited, and the prospect of Mush to do it looks like less now, rather than more.
What if Mushie goes over to bin Laden’s side?
If they could come to terms to restore some semblance of democracy; they could turn their attention to the tribal regions to reign in AL-Qaeda & the Taliban. Any pacifying of these regions could have a positive affect on Afghanistan as well. The Taliban would have one less haven..of course Iran would take them in.
I’m just thinking out loud, but I really wonder if setting up a Pashtunistan tribal zone for both AF and Pakistan would help?
I mean, it’s not like Kurdistan where you have civilized people. Kurdistan can stay in Iraq I think.
But Pashtunistan would be for these people, some of whom are literally mountain people stuck in 10000 BC. Some of these people don’t know electricity or that the earth is round. Just let these cave people alone, and if they leave their reservation, shoot ‘em.
Well then Osama would have nukes, and I’d stay away from NYC or DC if I were you.
