Newsweek actually had a good article a few weeks back on the lack of science and scholarship in the Muslim world.

Anyone who writes or speaks out publicly on anything that might remotely question Salafist dogma in is at risk so there is an utter lack of imagination and debate of new ideas in any field you can think of, from History to the Hard Sciences (and you can forget about philosophy and theology).
