Fred Thompson Defends Campaign Adviser With Criminal Record
Sunday , November 04, 2007
Fred Thompson said Sunday that he wishes he had known earlier that one of his key presidential campaign advisers pleaded guilty to drug charges but he still thinks Phil Martin is "a good man."
Martin, a businessman who has lent Thompson his Cessna to fly around the country, is one of four campaign co-chairman for the '08 Republican candidate. The Washington Post reports Sunday that Martin also posted a guilty plea in 1979 for selling 11 pounds of marijuana and a no contest plea in 1983 for cocaine trafficking and conspiracy.
Judgment was withheld on the first plea while Martin served out probation. The 1983 charges, along with a felony bookmaking charge, came while he was still serving that probation. Martin's probation was extended and he served no jail time.
Thompson, who's not the first candidate this year to be linked to a donor with a criminal past, seemed to brush off the news.
"You are talking about something that happened in his life, I guess, 25 years ago ... when he was in his 20s," Thompson said. "I wish I had known about it a little bit earlier. Phil, I am sure, knows that he should have told me about this. That he thought (it) was over and done with and forgotten about I am sure. But of course nothing is ever over and done with and forgotten about in this business."

He's head and shoulders above the other candidates in more ways than one.
“Fred did good, his values continue to shine above political expediency. One could not have a better friend than Fred. However, Philip Martin should have let Fred know his past before becoming involved with Freds campaign. It will be interesting to see how this pans out, but I doubt seriously it will amount to a hill of beans.”
I agree. The fact that Fred did not meet Martin until the early 90’s also shows that he did not have knowledge of the problems Martin had 25 years ago! However, I do agree that Martin should have told Fred about this since things are always dug up concerning anyone who is involved in a presidential campaign.
If I'm not mistaken, the same people defending Fred now were criticizing Hunter about his involvement in the House banking scandal and ties to Duke Cunningham & defense contractors.
The money driven, poll driven, fake popularity, name recognition, favorite son gives the voters a very stifled vote for POTUS.
The MSM/DNC/RNC picks of Hillary, Obama, Edwards, Richardson, Rudy, Romney, McCain and Thompson shows how our low, our party system has become a joke.
The above front runners should not be elected dog catcher.
That's funny! When I saw you say "ABS media" it reminded me of the black plastic sewer pipe I just replaced my old root infested septic tank pipeline with!!! Isn't that ironic???
Not true. I’ve never criticized Hunter, except to point out that he has little to no chance of being the nominee.

Yeah Fred, but they have to drag you down somehow so I’d expect a gigantic expose maybe on your grandfather or great-grandfather fighting for the Confederacy and how that makes your whole line racist.
I expect a hit piece on Bill Clintons’ activities in the 70’s and 80’s any day now.
dittos——— I was pretty much sold this morning. the ‘debates’ are clearly not his best arena in which to communicate, but it seemed pretty evident that he is thoughtful about what he thinks, not what he he thinks is most politically advantageous. I decided he is the candidate that is going to get my financial support in this race.
A good responde, IMO.
Too bad his “friend” didn’t mention this to Fred.
I’m glad to hear it! Go, Fred!
Fodder for the anit-Fred’s. Nothing else.
The only thing that makes Thompson any better than Hunter is name recognition and therefore standing in the polls. If Hunter had ANY shot, most here would be backing him as seen in a recent FRpoll.
Sadly he doesn’t seem to have any idea how to run a nat’l campaign, therefore our choices are swiftly coming down to a liberal, a RINO and Fred.
I choose Fred.
What does that have to do with anything?
anti-Freds. Bad fingers
responde = response
“Im sure that interview sent chills through the Hillary campaign and the DNC.”
They’ll donate cash (incognito) to Huckleberry.
Yer a real piece of garbage.
I like both men, but Fred is the one who can win. I sincerely hope Fred finds a place for Hunter in his administration.
But Fred's the almighty and can do no wrong, so let me commence to bowing down before his presence here.
O FREDERICK, PLEASE RUN...O FREDERICK...SHALAAM...
