HUNTER CALLS ON ROMNEY TO OPPOSE BAIN PARTNERSHIP WITH CHINESE COMPANY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 2, 2007

CONTACT: Gary Becks (619) 334-1655, dlhunter08@yahoo.com

San Diego, CA - - - Presidential candidate and current Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, Congressman Duncan Hunter, today called on former Governor Mitt Romney to send a "clear statement" to the leadership of the company he founded, Bain Capital, to terminate a proposed business deal with a controversial Chinese corporation seeking to acquire U.S. defense contractor 3COM. Bain Capital is attempting to form a business arrangement with Huawei Corporation, a Chinese corporation founded by an officer of the Peoples Liberation Army of Communist China, which faces allegations of assisting Saddam Hussein in the targeting of U.S. aircraft and in helping the Taliban develop surveillance equipment.

"I am extremely concerned that Governor Romney's company would tout a highly suspect Chinese corporation as a strategic partner," stated Hunter. "Forming a business partnership with a corporation known to have direct ties with terrorists and dictators while, at the same time, openly seeking to acquire a major U.S. corporation that performs vital cyber security work for the Department of Defense, can only be characterized as irresponsible."

A resolution has been introduced in Congress, H.Res. 730, which states; "The preponderance of publicly available evidence clearly suggests that as currently structured, the proposed transaction involving Huawei threatens the national security of the United States and should not be approved by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States ." A copy of this resolution is provided.

Hunter stated in his letter to Governor Romney, "…while it is true that you no longer control Bain Capital, the contributions you have received from its principals as its founding member indicate that your influence within the company remains strong.

"Further, while the Committee on Foreign Investment has yet to rule on the Huawei transaction, this corporation's connection to Saddam Hussein, the Taliban and the Army of Communist China should clearly disqualify them from becoming, in the words of your former company, "a strategic partner" in acquiring a U.S. firm such as 3COM, which performs vital cyber-security work for the U.S. Department of Defense.

"This letter is a request that you immediately issue a statement of policy that this transaction should be terminated on the grounds of national security. Please let me know what you intend to do."

A copy of Congressman Hunter's letter, as well as two articles regarding Huawei acquisition efforts are provided. Media are encouraged to contact Gary Becks at (619) 334-1655 for additional information or to arrange an interview with Hunter.

Its sad how many people couldn’t care less that the Chinese are supplying weapons to our enemies (the folks killing our soldiers) as long as they themselves make a buck off china.

"I am extremely concerned that Governor Romney's company would tout a highly suspect Chinese corporation as a strategic partner," stated Hunter.

This is false. Romney does not manage the company, nor he is more than some votes as a minority shareholder in the company.

"This letter is a request that you immediately issue a statement of policy that this transaction should be terminated on the grounds of national security. Please let me know what you intend to do."

This is just silly and snarky. Hunter is demeaning himself, not Romney.

I can’t believe that all these years I have not been following Duncan Hunter’s career.. I am glad I discovered him this early in the campaign. I think he is by far the best candidate in the race, and as more folks take the time to get to know him they will agree.

In all fairness.. I think you have clearly demonstrated your OPOSITION to Duncan Hunter over the past several weeks.. so forgive me if I take this into consideration when reading your post.... I suspect your post is just another attempt to smear Duncan Hunter.. If you want to check the FACTS and sources on this please do so and get back to me with what you find.... and please stick to the facts...

David

I think you have clearly demonstrated your OPOSITION to Duncan Hunter over the past several weeks.

How so? I've made many very positive comments toward Duncan Hunter since last summer when I found out more about his record.

If you want to check the FACTS and sources on this please do so and get back to me with what you find.... and please stick to the facts...

The issue is what is in this "letter" and the merits of its statements. Don't try to deflect attention from it.

I'm not the issue here. This letter is.

I am not trying to deflect attention away from the original post. Which I did not write by the way, it was sent to me via private e-mail and I posted it. Seriously, if there is anything that in it that is NOT FACTUAL -- as you suggest.. I really do want to know about it. I have not personally researched this and took the post as "face value" because it came from someone that I trust.

I as not trying to deflect attention TOWARD you in any way.. I was simply stating that having reviewed some of your recent posts I don't see you as a "strong supporter of Duncan Hunter" so therefore when you post a comment like....YOUR WORDS IN RED

This is false

or

This is just silly and snarky. Hunter is demeaning himself, not Romney.

I take it with a "grain of salt" in view of the fact that you have not publicly stated your SUPPORT for Duncan Hunter.... as demonstrated by comments in previous posts...such as...

I like supporting RP (because I have for so long before he became so controversial) but I am prepared to let the primaries speak. If RP gets traction, great. If not, move on to my second choices. By that time (after SC), only two or three other candidates are likely to be viable and they will like be Rudi, Mitt, Fred. And I'll pick the guy most likely to beat Rudi in FL and elsewhere.

That statement is not exactly false. Bain was founded in 1984 by Mitt Romney, T. Coleman Andrews III and Eric Kriss.

There was a very similar situation a few years ago concerning Global Crossing. I followed that because I was involved with telephone services.

The government stepped in on the Global Crossings deal due to National Securities issues. That is still unresolved.

:) - Who is pissing and moaning my FRiend? -- :)

I was simply responding to a post which suggested that the orginal post was false... I have no way to dispute that claim but simply took note of the fact that the individual making the claim was NOT a Duncan Hunter supporter... (note taken) -- I am glad there are others out there who are more knowledgeable on this and can fill us ALL in on the facts and details.. TOWARD VICTORY ! -- No pissing and moaning here.. just grins from ear to ear my FRiend...

Why is there no direct link to this “Press Release” on Duncan Hunter’s website? Your provided link only goes to his home page and I don’t see this listed under “Press Releases” anywhere. Is his own website lagging behind?

It’ll be a long time before we hear Slick Willard’s flip-flopping response to this. He’s still talking to his lawyers!
