Reports of terrorist suspects on island put transportation agencies on alert

Nantucket authorities, along with the FBI, are investigating the possibility that two individuals on the FBIs terrorist watch-list are on Nantucket.
Town and airport officials confirmed yesterday evening that there had been multiple sightings reported of at least one person on the terrorist watch-list at Nantucket Memorial Airport earlier in the day. There were conflicting statements as to whether the person or persons were coming to or leaving the airport. No incidents of suspicious activity were reported.
Ann Davis, the spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), would neither confirm nor deny any details regarding the sightings except to say, the FBI is investigating.
Members of the State Police and the Nantucket Police Department were unavailable for comment at press time.
Employees of the various airlines, the Steamship Authority and the Hy-Line were given a photograph of and advised to be on the lookout for a man who appeared to be of Arabic descent, with dark hair, a full beard and glasses.
The photo was not released to the press.
It was not clear what authority had distributed the photo. The employees, however, said that they had been told to keep a look-out for anyone who appeared similar to the picture.
One airport official said it was reported that a woman who was listed on the terrorist-watch list had purchased a plane ticket and received a boarding pass for a Cape Air flight, but did not get on the plane and did not check any baggage.
Cape Air officials also were not available for comment.
