A call to end illegals' refuges (Fred Thompson)
The Washington Times ^ | October 24, 2007 | Stephen Dinan

Posted on 10/24/2007 2:39:57 PM PDT by neverdem

Fred Thompson yesterday became the first major presidential candidate to embrace attrition as the solution to illegal entry, saying the government should deny illegal aliens a hiding place by cracking down on the businesses and sanctuary cities that shield them.

In the first major policy announcement of his campaign, Mr. Thompson said the federal government should punish sanctuary cities by denying them some federal funds and also should withhold money from states and localities that offer social services to illegal aliens.

"Taxpayer money should not be provided to illegal immigrants," Mr. Thompson said at a round-table discussion in Florida yesterday.

It's the strongest line of any of the major presidential candidates so far and goes straight to the heart of the issue that is dominating the Republican presidential race.

For weeks, Mr. Thompson's top Republican rivals — former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney — have been trading barbs over whose immigration record was worse.

Mr. Romney did nothing to rein in sanctuary cities in Massachusetts during his term as governor, although he did oppose granting licenses to illegal aliens and struck an agreement with federal officials so state police could start enforcing some immigration laws. That agreement was overturned by his successor earlier this year before it took effect.

Mr. Giuliani, meanwhile, sued the federal government to defend New York's sanctuary city policy. He said the city's policy of not identifying illegal aliens was part of the policy that helped turn New York into a safer city in the 1990s.

Sanctuary cities have leaped into the news after reports this past summer that several New Jersey college students were slain by an illegal alien who had been arrested for violent crimes but was released. Officials had not checked his immigration status and did...

“He said the city’s policy of not identifying illegal aliens was part of the policy that helped turn New York into a safer city in the 1990s.”

I think he gives this policy too much credit. Maybe people getting tired of crime had the most to do with it.

Good common sense here from Fred. We have seen 70+ ERs and hospitals in my state by absorbing the cost of illegals.

Finally a candidate says something that makes sense — now what about the Durbin bill they’re trying to sneak through the Senate — as if nobody’s watching!

To paraphrase Rep. Pelosi - If we just sent all of those illegal aliens home, we could afford to fight those wildfires.

I noticed on the news all the sob stories about how even though illegals are helping fight the fires and some are in danger of losing their jobs and even their houses, Americans just don't appreciate them.

Fred certainly does make sense! GO FRED! And to those of you who love Duncan Hunter, I do too but feel his time will come in 2016 after his service as Fred’s VP.

“Officials had not checked his immigration status and did not notify federal authorities.”

Oh, yes they knew he was an illegal alien...

If he was an American citizen he would not have got out of jail...

An interesting parable.

I bought a bird feeder. I hung
it on my back porch and filled
it with seed. What a beauty of
a bird feeder it is, as I filled it
lovingly with seed. Within a
week we had hundreds of birds
taking advantage of the
continuous flow of free and
easily accessible food.
But then the birds started
building nests in the boards
of the patio, above the table,
and next to the barbecue.

Then came the poop. It was
everywhere: on the patio tile,
the chairs, the table ...
everywhere!

Then some of the birds
turned mean. They would
dive bomb me and try to
peck me even though I had
fed them out of my own
pocket.
And others birds were
boisterous and loud. They
sat on the feeder and
squawked and screamed at
all hours of the day and night
and demanded that I fill it
when it got low on food.
After a while, I couldn’t even
sit on my own back porch
anymore So I took down the
bird feeder and in three days
the birds were gone. I cleaned
up their mess and took down
the many nests they had built
all over the patio.

Soon, the back yard was like
it used to be ... quiet, serene
and no one demanding their
rights to a free meal.

Now let’s see ....
Our government gives out
free food, subsidized housing,
free medical care, and free
education and allows anyone
born here to be an automatic
citizen
Then the illegals came by the
tens of thousands. Suddenly
our taxes went up to pay for
free services; small apartments
are housing 5 families; you
have to wait 6 hours to be seen
by an emergency room doctor;
your child’s 2nd grade class is
behind other schools because
over half the class doesn’t speak
English
Corn Flakes now come in a
bilingual box; I have to
“press one” to hear my bank talk to me in English, and
people waving flags other
than “Old Glory” are
squawking and screaming
in the streets, demanding
more rights and free liberties.

Just my opinion, but maybe
it’s time for the government
to take down the bird feeder

I saw a few mentions of Fred's speech on Chrissy Matthews today and even he admitted this stand by Fred held potential to fundamentally change the race. Fred is starting to act more like a real candidate and put more solid policy positions out there to contrast himself with the other candidates.

I saw some polling yesterday that indicated only about 1/3 of likely voters across the country were likely to be single-issue voters on illegal immigration issues and, among those voters, it's split between opponents of illegal immigration and Hispanics in more or less equal numbers.

I think that poll is probably manipulated, as so many of them are. I think Fred will start to see some boost in his numbers related to this. He might start showing very strongly in South Carolina, for instance.

Good on Fred! For his next number, I propose “no aid to the Palestinian Authority.”
Kick out the UN would be great too, but that can wait a while. :)

That alone wouldn't do it but at least there would be one less incentive for them to keep streaming across the border. It's a start.
