Most authoritative article I have read this far concerning what happened in Syria last month. Much more that the gov't needs to tell us.

“apparently a Syrian nuclear installation.”

The UN has already apologized to Syria for a failure in a translator. Syria has no nuclear installations. That, is according to todays news.

Some things people, except those affected, do not have a need to know.

We already be in WW III. The peanut gallery simply hasn’t realized
it yet. (Or WW IV if you believe that the Cold War was WW III).

Author of the article never researched the 1983 Able Archer incident. Soviet ICBMs were fueled and all the bombers either "flushed" or standing on the ready line, running.

THAT was the closest to WWIII we ever came. It would have made the 62 Cuban Missile Crisis look like a firecracker.

Disturbing excerpt from the article:
The point is that the administration is subtly attempting to cast doubt on any reported link between North Korea and the Syrian reactor (without directly denying such a link). Otherwise it would become obvious that North Korea is flagrantly violating its nuclear agreement with the United States. Apparently, their secret briefing has led Hoekstra and Ros-Lehtinen to believe that the administration is obfuscating the reality of North Korean proliferation, in order to preserve the six-party deal.

The administration is obfuscating???

You bet, Piquaboy.

“...based on what we have learned...it is critical for every member of congress to be briefed on this incident, and as soon as possible.”

SO many are neither honorable nor responsible enough to trust.

Curious that the WH would want to cover for the NKs.

983 Able Archer incident

That is some scary stuff - to think that the Russkies really were afraid that we'd launch a first strike, and that they were prepared with an immediate, hair-trigger response...very sobering.

As for our "friends" in Iran: if the Russkies with their thousands of nukes and tens of thousands of tanks and aircraft were worried about us, how about YOU? We've got FAR more sophisticated weaponry and targetting technology now, and if you jokers think that you can take us on then your really ARE insane. Here's some advice for Iran's leadership: back the F off. Use your money to develop your economy, buy some nice luxury goods and services for yourselves and your families, and live a nice life. Challenging the US toe-to-toe on issues of survival isn't very healthy...just ask the Germans, Japanese and Russkies. We'll destroy you, either literally or by picking apart your economy piece-by-piece. In short, mind your own business and everything will be fine; don't do that, and your country will never be the same.

Oh, and don't forget the Israelis. If you goat-phockers try anything serious, it'll be a race between us and them to see who can make your whole country glow in the dark first.

The "deal" with the NKs is being billed as one of the biggest successes of this Administration. How would it look if Bush was hoodwinked as bad or worse than the Slickster?

Methinks that the hope is to take small, isolated actions periodically to make sure that NK isn't an immediate threat, and to push off a truly devastating action as long as possible (and possibly with the hope that the insane little child running the place will get a sudden case of immediate and fatal lead poisoning, courtesy of his generals, and that the place may end up getting run by someone who's at least a bit rational).

Yeah, I suspect that they are afraid that the truth could derail their 6-party talk/peace treaty/disabling/economic aid deal with N. Korea, the shining piece of Bush legacy Sunshine Condi is working so hard at.

Some here are trying to spin it as justifiable measure against good-for-nothing Dem traitors in Congress. However, it could be just a convenient spin.

N. Korean involvement in Syrian nuke project, if openly confirmed, would derail their plan. It is quite logical that they keep this info under wraps as long as possible, fearing that Kim Jong-il's goons could walk out of negotiation and N. Korea sets off the second nuke if this news becomes a public knowledge.

Meanwhile we’re shipping them several million bbls of N6 fuel to keep their lights on.

“World War III” has always referred to a general nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union. This thing would have just been Syria getting its ass waxed.

I'd shut off the spigot immediately if I lived on the 3rd floor of the White House. Similarly, there just **might** be an unexplained accident at Iran's one and only gasoline refinery...fortuitous accidents have a way of happening, for some unexplained reason.

Not necessarily - Syria is strongly allied with Russia once again, as well as with Iran. Had the Israeli strike failed they might have had a backup nuclear option, which might have elicited a response from Russia, which we would likely have to respond to ourselves.

Since 1983 came and went without a World War then this incident was close to once again bringing the world to another World War. I am confident that Stanley Kurtz is well aware of Able Archer.

But beyond that it was not Kurtz who made that statement, it was a very senior British ministerial source.

The people clamoring for the latest and most official update on this event are probably the same clowns who have shown NO ability to keep their mouths shut on anything even half as significant up to this point.

Why can’t this thing get the same hush-hush treatment that these creeps hold a sacred vow of silence to for the Clinton impeachment records over in the Ford building? THAT proceeding didn’t even bear directly on national security or foreign relations so much as this story does, and NO human will be allowed in there for the next 30 years!
