UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.
A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

there was a suspected arsonist killed in San Bernardino two nights ago
Associated Press - October 25, 2007 4:04 PM ET
PHOENIX (AP) - An Arizonan shot and killed by police in Southern California after they chased him because they thought he was a possible arsonist has been identified.
The San Bernardino County coroner said the man was 27-year-old Russell Lane Daves of Topock, a small town along the Arizona-California border in Mohave County.
Daves was shot Tuesday night following a chase that ended when he backed his car into a police cruiser and an officer opened fire.
The chase started after campus police at Cal State University found Daves inside a pickup in a brushy area near campus. The officers wanted to make sure he wasn’t trying to start a fire but when they approached, he drove off.
Daves was arrested in Mohave County last month on a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence in a case that involved his 2-year-old son. The case was later dismissed.
I saw Condi on the news (was busy working so don’t know what is up) and her voice was VERY shakey and then some man came up to the podium to speak...
GW needs to be Cowboy tough when he addresses ya’ll for support today.
Yep. Paseo Delicias runs into Rancho Santa Fe village from the east.

I just read your other post, the email. Do you know if they were successful, so far, running the fire to the south? Or is the village area still at risk?
According to CAL Fire Chief Tom O’Keefe in a television interview with KNBC, two remote homes were lost near Lakeview Point between Snow Valley and Big Bear Dam. The homes were lost overnight and were in an area that was very edifficult to access for firefighters. O’Keefe indicated that the Slide Fire is now the highest priority for the state, and is receiving resources accordingly.
The Slide fire still has no containment. Officials are waiting for “critical resource needs” to be met before containment steps can begin, according to CAL Fire. The communities of Live Oak, Smiley Park, Running Spring, Arrowbear Lake, Snow Valley, and Deer Lick are all threatened, as well as The Cavalry Chapel Camp, The National Children’s Forest, The Forest Service Visitor’s Center, and The Nordic Rim Ski Areas.
They were successful. By heading it south, it went into a broad stream bed area with golf courses and little brush, so it died out. The village is safe, stopped the fire to the east. No active hot spots anywhere around there now. Residents are allowed back in.
After some delays getting through customs, the Martin Mars amphibious water bomber has arrived from Vancouver, British Columbia and is in Southern California. Reader Dave Bohorquez snapped this shot of the big seaplane floating in Lake Elsinore, awaiting firefighting assignments.
The World War II-era flying boat has been used for fighting fires in Canada since 1959. They can land on lakes or in the ocean, can fill their tanks in the water and have a capacity of 7,200 gallons.
Excellent! I love strolling around there. RSF would not be the same w/o the village.
Thank you for the info.
Man arrested for impersonating firefighter
Posted @ 12:04 PM
A 44-year-old man dressed in full fire gear was arrested Wednesday afternoon after deputies found him in an evacuated area of Fallbrook.
William Brock was laying a fully-charged hose attached to a hydrant across Live Oak Park Road near Gumtree Lane around 4 p.m. in an area where fires were still smouldering, sheriff’s officials said. There were no other firefighters in the area.
Brock told deputies that he was a firefighter who had been sent to help extinguish hot spots and that he was allowed to pass through the check points .
According to the Sheriff’s Department, he was driving a pickup truck with a personalized firefighter plate loaded with fire hoses and other fire gear. He was wearing a blue shirt that had the word “firefighter” on it. In his truck, officials found a blue shirt with a Morongo Valley Fire Department patch on it, a firefighter badge and a name tag with his name on it.
Deputies checked and found that Brock did not work for the Morongo Valley Fire Department or any other. They also found that he is on probation in Los Angeles County for narcotics violations.
Brock was taken into custody. He will face charges of impersonating a firefighter, entering a closed area and obstructing officers in the performance of their duties, sheriff’s officials said.
Just saw a blip on the news of Pres. Bush speaking with Gov Arnie by his side.
GW has a bigger head than Arnie.
Actually looks more buff than Arnie.
Arnie looks older than GW...he needs to eat a Texas style meal maybe put a few pounds on.
Don't Let Bush Burn California
**********************************
President George Bush is playing the hero again as he tours fire-ravaged California this week. Yet his expressions of concern are not likely to be taken well, since he has stood in the way of that state's effort to fight global warming emissions for the last two years!
While Bush is attempting to score compassion points with the people of California, let's tell him not to burn Californians by blocking their duly enacted laws. The EPA must allow the state's Pavley, or "Clean Cars" fuel emission standards to go forward - along with the standards of a dozen other states that have followed California's lead.
No one fire can be blamed on global warming, but there is no doubt that changes in our climate are causing more fires that are more severe. The tragic events unfolding in California are yet another stark reminder that action is needed to combat global warming now, and the EPA should not stand in the way of California's lead.
What is Pavley?
California passed the Pavley Act in 2002 and adopted its regulations in 2004, mandating a gradual reduction in global warming pollutants emitted by cars and light trucks sold in California over an eight-year phase in period. The standard would reduce global warming emissions from cars and light trucks in California and the twelve other states by nearly 30 percent. The thirteen states combined represent such a large market that EPA approval of Pavley would likely change automobile industry practices nationwide.
Why must the EPA approve it?
The EPA must grant a waiver for any state regulation of vehicle emissions. Yet, the EPA has delayed this ruling by claiming it lacks the authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles -- an excuse made obsolete by last April's Supreme Court ruling finding that the EPA does have such authority. The EPA is now just dragging its heels.
What do we need to do?
Friends of the Earth has set up a petition to Bush demanding that he untie the hands of the beleaguered state of California and let it fight global warming with its Pavley law. Friends of the Earth will send copies of the signatures it collects to the legislature and media in California, so that they know the nation is behind their state's leadership even if Bush is not.
Sign the petition today. The EPA is expected to finally hand down its decision before the end of this year, and this could be our last chance to ensure that decision is the right one.
Anyone watching FOX...I believe they were talking about the arsonist that was shot and killed near San Berdo...Then at the bottom of the story it flashed, suspect “Guatemalan native” and it even showed his name....And within 2 or 3 seconds, it disappeared...I started writing down the name, and bam...It was gone within just seconds.
Hmmmmm. Didn't see it, but it sounds very suspicious, doesn't it?
Two more people have been booked for investigation of arson in Southern California.
Authorities say an adult and a juvenile were arrested after they started a small brush fire Tuesday night in the San Diego suburb of Vista.
The fire burned about 200 square feet before firefighters put it out.
The adult was identified as Gorgonio Nava. The other was not identified because he is a juvenile.
At least four people have been arrested for investigation of arson since the wildfires broke out over the weekend. None of the suspects has been connected to any of the major blazes.
Earlier in Los Angeles, outraged West Hills residents saw a 41-year-old man set a fire and chased him to a restaurant where they held him until cops arrived.
Catalino Pineda, a Guatemalan immigrant on probation for making excessive false emergency reports to law enforcement, was arrested and charged with arson, police said.
Thousands of homes remained in peril, but conditions had improved to the point that most of the 10,000 refugees who took shelter in San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium were gone this morning. By noon, just 2,500 people were left.
