Philly punishes Scouts over 'gay' issue

Prompted by opposition to the Boy Scouts' rule disqualifying homosexuals as troop leaders, Philadelphia has forced the city's local chapter to pay fair-market rent of $200,000 a year for its city-owned headquarters.

As WND reported in June, Philadelphia's city council voted to renege on a 1928 ordinance allowing the Cradle of Liberty Council to have its headquarters in a building on a parcel of public land "in perpetuity" for $1 a year.

The city argues it can't rent public property for a nominal sum to any group that discriminates.

City officials in San Francisco and Boston have made similar decisions displacing the Scouts because of the group's behavior code.

Fairmount Park Commission president Robert N.C. Nix announced this week the Cradle of Liberty Council must pay the $200,000 rent if it wants to remain in the building after May 31.

Jeff Jubelirer, spokesman for the Cradle of Liberty Council, told the Associated Press the higher rent money "would have to come from programs. That's 30 new Cub Scout packs, or 800 needy kids going to our summer camp."

"It's disappointing, and it's certainly a threat," he said.

Homosexual organizations previously challenged the Scouts' policy, but lost at the U.S. Supreme Court level, where a 2000 ruling confirmed that as a private group, the Scouts could set restrictions for their leaders.

The activist groups then turned their sights on property arrangements such as in Philadelphia, where the Scouts had been using a parcel of public property, only with some maintenance costs, for years.

The Philadelphia Scouting council in 2003 said it would adopt a nondiscrimination policy on homosexuals, but reversed itself within weeks and then dismissed an 18-year-old who publicly announced his homosexuality during that time period.

What they really mean is someone that is not a communist or socialist.

What would happen if the BSA closed the Council?

Would there be enough of a stink that the city would re-renege?

As a parent of a scout (and an ASM), I'd be real happy if my Council stood strong to protect our scouts from predators. Not every homosexual is a predator - I understand that: but there are more in that group than there are in mine. I want to reduce risk, not increase the risk of reading a headline.

Love it. Philly, the murder capital of the U.S., finally takes a stand, and it’s against the Boy Scouts.

Is it any wonder the city is violent and drug-riddled?

Considering the scouts built the building in the first place, and donated it to the city in exchange for this “in perpetuity” arrangement, I think they have a good chance in court to win against the city reneging on the agreement, which was made before any law or city policy stating they can’t make agreements with discriminating organizations.

In a sane court anyway...

Otherwise, the scouts should just blow it up upon leaving rather than allow that faggy city to screw them out of their own building.

I doubt many people knew the scouts donated that building. I sure didn’t.

If the city reneged on the rent, the scouts should renege on the bldg donation to the city.

My comment is meant to be sarcastic, as it would send the wrong message to the scouts.

A deal made in good faith should be honored, something these elected officials either never learned or are ignoring.

Michael Smerconish reported on the radio station WPHT (1210 AM) that those responsible for this in Philly are "out of the closet gays." He added to his comment with "Not that there is anything wrong with that."

I disagree. These people are disgusting, power mad, out of control perverts who are using their positions to punish a wonderful organization (the Boy Scouts of America).

My alma mater, Syracuse University, did the same thing several years ago.

It stopped allowing the Boy Scouts to use the Carrier Dome because of the organizations "homophobia."

Every time SU calls me for money, you can guess what my response is.

This is who the left idolizes:

And this is who they punish and hate:

The city is too busy going after smokers, boy scouts, restaurants that sell trans fats and steak shops that have “please speak English”.

City of brotherly love not really. The Boy Scouts have done much in many different areas and this is what they get for their effort. Shame on you.

No but every homosexual is a homosexual. Why would I want my son involved in a program to help him become a better man if its ran by gay leaders that don't even know what being a real man is? Sorry not all of them are pedaphiles, but all of them are mentally not there in terms of their sexuality.

Why are so many politicians promoting the sodomy of young boys. They are not just stupid, they are perverts and take pleasure when young boys are made into perverts. This is the goal of the leftist godless athiests of America.

Depends. If the Scouts have something in writing from the city saying that Philadelphia agreed to the lease and the terms then they have a case to take the city to court, and probably win. If they have nothing in writing but have instead relied on a verbal agreement then they're hosed.

It’s difficult when one group, dedicated to honor and positive American values, trys to make deals with another group that has no honor nor values.

I did read some place yesterday that the Scouts actually gave the building to the city, but the MSM stories all leave out that tid-bit. I wonder why?

Why do you think they call it "The City of Brotherly Love"? Except for going there when called to work, there's nothing I'm willing to spend my money on -- and allow them the tax monies appended thereto. The Democratic Nationalsocialist Committee and their minions are ruining Philly and all of the other large cities in our nation. Just another brick on the road to the Third Civil War. (I wonder if it will start there as did the first one?)       '^(
