Russia's Putin Draws Parallel with Roosevelt

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday compared himself to Franklin D. Roosevelt, the U.S. leader who served three full terms and is credited with laying the foundations for his country's prosperity.

When asked about his vision for Russia's future, Putin -- who is to step down when his second term ends next year but is expected to retain significant influence -- drew a parallel with Roosevelt's New Deal plan conceived in the 1930s depression.

"Roosevelt laid out his plan for the country's development for decades in advance" and was criticized for that by the U.S. elite, Russian news agencies quoted Putin as saying.

"At the end of the day it turned out that the implementation of that plan benefited ordinary citizens and the elites and eventually brought the United States to the position it is in today."

"We are not doing anything unique," Putin said, referring to his own administration's plans. "As we move out of a systemic crisis, we have to do a lot of things in what you could call a hands-on style."

Putin was speaking to Russian reporters after a televised question-and-answer session with citizens.

Many Russian voters credit Putin with bringing stability and economic growth after the chaos that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union. He says his aim now is to entrench policies that will ensure Russia's long-term prosperity.

He did not say if he planned to replicate Roosevelt's longevity: the former U.S. president served from 1933 until he died in office in 1945.

Putin is nearing the end of his second consecutive term, the maximum allowed under Russia's constitution. He says he will leave office. Some analysts speculate though he could return to the presidency at a later date.

This is not the first time Putin compared himself to FDR. A search here at FR turned up a similar story dated. March 2007. Some might say it's one communist comparing himself to another but I don't necessarily subscribe to the FDR characterization as a commie.

“Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday compared himself to Franklin D. Roosevelt, the U.S. leader who served three full terms and is credited with laying the foundations for his country’s prosperity.”

Actually America prospered DESPITE FDR’s policies.

He might as well; FDR was a like-minded socialist.

He shoulda compared himself to the Hildabeast, as she is of the same mold (or is it "mould")?

‘Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday compared himself to Franklin D. Roosevelt, the U.S. leader who served three full terms and is credited with laying the foundations for his country’s prosperity. ‘

Why shouldn’t he? FDR, like Putin, was surrounded by communists....(chuckle)

The difference is Putin has it so by choice, FDR never apparently realized it.

FDR was a big time socialist, and the closest thing to a dictator the US ever had. Well, he managed to get us through WW2, but not without marring our victory by giving half of the world to the Soviets. Next time a Democrat trumpets that FDR defeated Nazism and Fascism, remind them of Stimson, Knox, Eisenhower and Patton.

With the help of FDR the Communists internationally expanded their power like never before and never afterwards. Jimmy enabled the Islamofascists.

Back in the day, the sayings around Ft Bragg went as follows:

Jimmy Carter was the best president Russia ever had.

My peanut has a first name,
its J-i-m-m-y;
my peanut has a second name;
its c-a-r-t-e-r;
oh i love to eat him every day
and if you ask me why I’ll say;
Cuz Jimmy Carter has a way
of screwing up the USA!

(sung to the the tune of the Oscar Mayer jingle)

Yeah, I guess hands-on may be one way of describing what was done to Alexander Litivenko and Anna Politskaya and others who have questioned Putin’s vision. I think hands-around-the-throat may be a better characterization of Putin’s syle.

Wrong. FDR the socialist didn't bring us out of the depression; WWII did.

Next, Putine is going to compare himself to God.

"He says his aim now is to entrench policies that will ensure Russia's long-term prosperity."

Yep. He's going to be part of the new Persian Empire, in which he WILL be a god. His desire is to control ALL of the ME oil, and Europe. After than he will assassinate the Pope and take over the Vatican, and BE god.

FDR was also America's first and only self-appointed Dictator for Life.

Well one think FDR would never do would be to supply nuclear material and know how to an ally that promised total annihalation of another nation like Putin is doing in Iran.

The MSM is ripping President Bush for dangerous talk about WWIII. The President was dead on with this issue. The Iran/Russia issue is a crisis for the USA and our ally Israel. It is as dangerous as the Cuban missle crisis in my opinion. To Putin, he gains much if Iran uses a nuke on Israel and/or the USA. The cost of oil will go to $150 a barrel and the USA will face a dramatic depression. Russia has their own oil supply in abundance.
