Prescribe 'the pill' at middle school?
Portland Press Herald ^ | October 16, 2007 | KELLEY BOUCHARD

Students who have parental permission to be treated at King Middle School's health center would be able to get birth control prescriptions under a proposal that the Portland School Committee will consider Wednesday.

The proposal would build on the King Student Health Center's practice of providing condoms as part of its reproductive health program since it opened in 2000, said Lisa Belanger, a nurse practitioner who oversees the city's student health centers.

If the committee approves the King proposal, it would be the first middle school in Maine to make a full range of contraception available to some students in grades 6 to 8, said Nancy Birkhimer, director of teen health programs for the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. Most middle schoolers are ages 11-13.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ruled that parents’ fundamental right to control the upbringing of their children “does not extend beyond the threshold of the school door,” and that a public school may provide students with “whatever information it wishes to provide, sexual or otherwise.”

The 9th Circuit declared “there is no fundamental right of parents to be the exclusive provider of information regarding sexual matters to their children” and “parents have no due process or privacy right to override the determinations of public schools as to the information to which their children will be exposed.”

That isn’t information, they are giving out perscriptions for the pill at the health center in a middle school, also condoms, to 6-8 grade kids.

Look for the girls who get the prescription to become very popular. I wonder if they’ll change their minds when STD’s become an epidemic among them?

This is WITH parental permission. What’s the problem?

My plan is to move to Montana one day but I will never do it as long as they’re in the 9th.

There was a rumor of breaking up the 9th into two courts, I wish they’d hurry.

Don’t misunderstand - I wasn’t posting that as an appeal to authority to say that this is legal and/or should be done.

I was posting that to alert everyone that this kind of crap is being pushed on us by the secular socialists, and they are after your kids.

They're sixth graders, of course they know all about STD's and how to identify them, and how condoms will prevent most of them.

Nope, if you give your kid permission to go there and sign the form allowing them to use the health facility for anything, they then will have the right to BC without their parents knowledge.

Yep, your 100% right. This I think takes it even one step further than what the ninth circus mandated.

I read MrB’s post as saying that the parents have NO RIGHT to have ANY say, information or to take them to get abortions, once a child is on the public school premise.

The public schools can do whatever they d*m well please, once you drop your kid off at the shcool.

It’s more common than you think but it isn’t usually middle school boys and middle school girls. It’s usually high school boys and middle school girls.

“Although students must have written parental permission to be treated at Portland’s school-based health centers, state law allows them to seek confidential health care and to decide whether to inform their parents about the services they receive, Belanger said. “

It seems the second part of this statement says that children can go get this “advice” and tell the “health center” that they don’t want their parents to know. The first part of the sentence is meaningless in light of the second part.

I think the problem is, first, that it's wrong, and stupid as well. Condoms are not medical treatment for a disease, they are an invitation to get STDs.

But also, most parents sign such consent forms because they want their kids to be able to have an aspirin or a tynenol without having to wait a couple of hours before someone gets parental permission. They assume common sense and good will on the part of the school authorities--which, perhaps, as this article shows, was stupid of them.

I just wanted to make sure that everyone is aware of this little hidden facet of the secular socialist agenda.

I agree. The pill can also have bad side effects.

The medication of American. If this trend continues, soon every child will be on multiple medications.

So don’t sign. This is a school full of kids whose parents are too poor (or irresponsible, or drug-addicted) to pay for their kids’ lunches. Many of the kids are getting pregnant, inevitably followed by either an abortion (usually very late, when irresponsible parents and minors are involved) or a baby born to an adolescent who will become the same sort of parent that started this whole cycle. To the extent that there are responsible parents who have kids in the school, they can opt to get their child’s health care at other facilities. This is certainly not going to deprive the child of emergency treatment pending ambulance arrival, if something happens during the school day.

I totally agree. I remember reading what the law really says long ago when I began homeschooling. I tired once to tell some moms once over some issue I’ve now forgotten. They just did not believe me. It is sad that the schools have so much power, and the parents are sooo clueless.

No, the students have to have parental permission to use the school health center at all. Once they have that permission, they have access to the whole range of services provided, without their parents having to be informed of any details.
