Prescribe 'the pill' at middle school?
Portland Press Herald ^ | October 16, 2007 | KELLEY BOUCHARD

Students who have parental permission to be treated at King Middle School's health center would be able to get birth control prescriptions under a proposal that the Portland School Committee will consider Wednesday.

The proposal would build on the King Student Health Center's practice of providing condoms as part of its reproductive health program since it opened in 2000, said Lisa Belanger, a nurse practitioner who oversees the city's student health centers.

If the committee approves the King proposal, it would be the first middle school in Maine to make a full range of contraception available to some students in grades 6 to 8, said Nancy Birkhimer, director of teen health programs for the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. Most middle schoolers are ages 11-13.

Kids never take the pill the way they are supposed to, anyway. They are kids.

And I know from speaking with my nieces and nephews that teenagers don't care if they get pregnant or not, because they just go get abortions.

If I had to guess, I would say condoms are the number one form of birth control among teenagers, and abortion is second.

“have parental permission”
So you find out that your 11 year old daughter is screwing around and your response is not to put a stop to it and try to improve her character and morals, but to say “Here ya go honey, take these and screw as many guys as you want.”
The damage to these kids will be enormous.

Can the kids get cough drops and tylenol too?

Or do those “dangerous” drugs still require parental approval?

The mother of one of the teenage girls in my former Youth group said that she decided to put the (then 16 year old) on the pill becuase “better safe than sorry”.

This from a professing Christian parent. Nothing like just throwing your hands in the air and giving up, no sir!

Oh good just as long as they don’t give out aspirins. That would violate a parent’s right to make medical decisions for their child. Everyone knows how dangerous aspirin is, why it can cause stomach bleeding. Nope best stick with a nice, safe birth control pill. After all no parent has any business trying to control the morals of their child. That is the school’s job. Look how good a job they do at teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. Why would you question their ability to provide the best for your child.
Give us your child you can trust us. NOT!!

Maybe Maine oughta give those cute, little, precociously-sexual, jiggly-gigglies the human papilloma/cervical cancer vaccination, “Gardasil”, too.

Here’s a thought: maybe parents should supervise their little skank-ettes so that said skank-ettes don’t have the opportunity to get laid and get pregnant.

Oh, well, it was just an idea. Stupid, I know.

“Most middle schoolers are ages 11-13”

BIRTH CONTROL? YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING!

When I was 11-13 I had heard rumors that girls were different than me but I was still skeptical. Sex? What’s that?

A few of you commented as follows:

I almost became an educator (I got sidetracked to a better thing) - one of the biggest unexplored and not mentioned facts of modern life of the last 50 years (give or take a few decades) is that adulthood has been delayed in the Western world. Problems of teenage promiscuous sexuality became a big deal in the post WW2 baby boom generation because the ages young boys and girls would be married off at kept getting delayed more and more.

People married young because they did not live as long but also because parents wanted to funnel all that teenage sexual drive into a marriage.

In fact the lower birth rates among western societies may be due in part to marriages being delayed to the age where libido drops off. Teenage married couples tend to produce more children both from the fact they have the strength to do and the desire for it.

I know we want to have kids stay our babies for a long time but nature has other priorities but I imagine anyone who calls off for marriages of teenagers as the solution would be tarred and feathered by the soccer mom crowd and radio talk show hosts. But I find this a better solution than trying to prevent teens from sexuality especially since just a generation ago our parents married earl;y and thus were nit subject to such temptations. I also understand that the ages mentioned in this article are younger than what I am talking about but this article brought this line of thought up. Any comments pro or con are welcomed.

PS: My parents only had a grade school education and married young (they went to work right away after grade school as well). I was the baby of a huge family that my parents started early.

See my #17 - any comments and solutions from a Christian perspective (outside of my marry them off early) besides calling teenagers skanks, etc?

I agree with what you said, however these days, if people marry younger, they will just get divorced.

The problem is not with teenagers and their sex drive. It is with our culture, allowing promiscuity without repercussions, i.e. abortion, and if they DO get married, as soon as they hit a rough patch they get divorced.

Not only that, many marry while disregarding the commitment because it IS so easy to get divorced.

So, we have, "Oh, if I get pregnant I'll just have an abortion.", and "Oh, if I get married I can always get divorced."

It is a no win situation, unless we can push our morals back at least fifty years, which will never happen.

I certainly do not know what the answer is, but I teach my girls from a very young age that abortion is killing a baby, and that divorce is unacceptable unless their is some sort of abuse. Educating my own children is all I can do.

Middle school generally compasses ages 11, 12, and 13. Even someone who supports youthful marriage as a way of channeling sexual impulses must recognize that 11, 12, and 13 are a bit young for sex, much less marriage.
