WASHINGTON -- Should the world's most-used search engine be more of a Yankee Google Dandy?
Google Inc. occasionally features light-hearted doodles on its colorful home-page logo to commemorate special occasions. But now they are drawing criticism from conservatives for not being more patriotic.
The Mountain View, Calif., company bathes its logo in stars and stripes every Independence Day, but last week's decision to honor the 50th anniversary of the Sputnik launch -- the second "g" in Google was replaced with a drawing of the Soviet satellite -- is being blasted by some conservatives.
Not only did Google honor an achievement by a totalitarian regime that was our Cold War enemy, they griped, but it did so without having ever altered its logo to commemorate U.S. military personnel on Memorial Day or Veterans Day.
"It's a kick to your belly," said conservative blogger Giovanni Gallucci, 39, a social media consultant from Dallas. "I understand these guys are scientists and engineers and they have their quirks and want to make sure people are recognized who might not normally be recognized . . . but why not celebrate the struggles that we've come through as a people?"

I get the idea that the system works: if enough people complain loudly enough, they may change their policy, though they may do so in an oblique way, so as not to appear to have caved in entirely.
I don’t think it’s going to effect us, it’s not like we’re the only side that gets mad about stupid crap. But it is silly, a lot of wasted dander. It is telling when opposition candidates don’t even bother with an issue, top end politicians have a good instinct for where the traction is.

There’s never any shame in acknowledging a good old fashioned whoopin. Everybody gets whooped once in a while, that’s not the question, the question is how do you respond. And America responded very well to that one, sure they beat us on a few more mostly because the additional progress they had getting to Sputnik, also because their control of the media made them less risk averse (how many times did they launch on live TV when everybody might see it blow up?). But by the time we got to Gemini and definitely Apollo we were pretty much ahead of them to stay.
I’m hoping China’s space program does the same thing, a couple of big wins for them that scare us might be good in the long run. It’s a real shame that we now have a space program that’s a complete joke, and not even a funny joke at that.

Your side is complaining that Google was celebrating a Soviet win over America. That’s the big stink, celebrating the USSR but not our own vets. Don’t you even read your own posts?!
I use the CustomizeGoogle add-on for Firefox.
"CustomizeGoogle is a Firefox extension that enhances Google search results by adding extra information (like links to Yahoo, Ask.com, MSN etc) and removing unwanted information (like ads and spam)."
It also claims to "anonymize your Google userid".
I think it is worth noting that the people who first make hay over these non-issues are often either TV or radio commentators, or newspaper columnists and not politicians.
Never forget that even those we perceive to be on our side are there to sell papers/ad time/product.
Causing controversy is what it takes to sell ads or whatever, but can be at odds with our goals as conservatives.
Or, in the case of the 4 people who listen to Air America, or watch whatever passes for liberal news, the goals of liberals.
Regardless of the Cold War, the Sputnik was a major achievment for mankind and jump sarted the space race and allowed the creation of such wonderful things as GPS, the Internet, wireless communication, satellite weapons systems, etc, etc.
So them commemorating Sputnik doesn’t bother me at all.
Except that...
1) They didn’t commemorate Memorial Day and 9-11 while having tons of logos for days that a significant portion of the world have never heard of (quite possibly including the people who they intended their signs for “Golden Harvest wha’?”).
2) They donated thousands of dollars to the DNAZI party (and not to candidates who have a facade of moderation but hard core lefties).
3) Their news site consistently pushing forward the liberal stories and burying conservative ones.
4) Kowtowed to the Chinese Government in the ChiComs endless quest for control of the Chinese population while telling the Justice Department to f off in the quest to combat child pornography, with Google screaming about violation to their consumers’ privacy...
5) ...and in a completely non-ironic manner establishing a database that contains the information of all searches made via its website (umm, what’s that about privacy, guys?)
And to top it off, Google is obsequieously PC. I’m not surprised they are commemorating the launch of Sputnik and I wouldn’t be surprised if they chose to commemorate the launch of the first satellitle if the first satellite was American. (I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t either.)
What I would be surprised by is if they celebrate the first satellite being launched in 1942 by the Third Reich. Google would probably just as soon pretend it didn’t happen.
So forgive me for thinking the little Internet Commies are enjoying commemorating this event a tad much.

Google has an obvious agenda, and they're pretty up front about. Considerably more up front than their apologists on this thread, anyway.

Me and anyone else who dares to suggest that Google is a leftist propaganda organ. That's the important stuff you've been keeping your powder dry for.
