"Did he in any way acknowledge the oddity of having a war on drugs that don't kill all that many people"

Is the author suggesting that we legalize heroin, meth and cocaine so those drugs can kill more people -- maybe even catch up to alcohol?

What a maroon.

No, the author is suggesting that the drug war isn’t about “protecting” people at all - it’s about increasing the power of the state.

Free man will sometimes make bad choices. Those may be tragic, but that does not mean the state has a right to make choices for everyone.

The drug war is lost. Time to cut our losses and spend money elsewhere, like sealing the border.

The potency of narcotics today is a direct result of the prohibition policies set forth in the middle of the last century. Just like moonshine during prohibition, if alcohol were illegal, you'd see a black market in 180 proof booze as the standard. But with a freedom based model, people are free to make their own choices, good or bad, without tying up the courts and law enforcement going after potheads and crack addicts.

“...so those drugs can kill more people”

Drugs don’t kill people.

Guns don’t kill people.

Peoples actions kill people.

If you’re stupid enough to repetitively ingest toxic things into your body...you deserve exactly what you get. Thinning the herd.

I’ve had a 38 cal next to my bed for 7 years. Out of guilt I take it out of the holster every few years and clean it. Other than that...it hasn’t moved a millimeter. It hasn’t killed anyone.

"What a maroon."

As difficult as it may be for you since you are a self-described 'maroon',please re-read the article and try to comprehend the obvious point it's making.

No, didn't you bother to read the article? The author is suggesting that criticisms of the war on some drugs which point out that it is resposible for increased police corruption, the disentigtation of the family particularly in urban areas, the abrogation of individual liberties, among other things, are correct; demonstrably so.

What a maroon!

I've been torn on drug legalization for years. I sincerely believe that everyone has the right to go to Hell however they want to... as long as they don't infringe on the rights of others. The rights of Life, Liberty and Property must also include the right to throw away your life, voluntarily binding oneself to another (as any military person knows!) and giving away one's possessions.

A high-ranking police official once said (and I don't remember well enough to quote) that the crack problem would solve itself because, in a few years, all the current users would be dead.

I'm still conflicted but I'm coming down on the side of legalization, taxation (at a high rate like cigarettes!), and high penalities for providing such to children.

One point to keep in mind that if you want to disagree with Milton Friedman, you had better bring a lot of ammo to the fight because he was one of the world's most intelligent men and has very rarely been proven wrong on matters of import.

Are you suggesting that we criminalize alcohol?

Getting addicted to any of these heavyweights tends to get you killed fast. Good riddance - a lot less street crime and Hollywood peabrains to worry about.
