‘Brief’ Bio

http://www.jimcperry.com/bio.html

Birth Name: James Christian Perry. I was named after my uncle James Perry, one of my father’s five brothers. My middle name was given to me in honor of a late friend of my parents.

Hebrew Name: Transliteration: Yaakov Eliyahu ben Yitzchak.

Translation: Jakob Elijah son of Isaac. I was named after my great-greatfather’s two brothers - Jakob and Eli - both of whom perished at the hands of the Nazis. The ‘son of’ part of my name did not come from my dad, as he was not Jewish (it’s my mother who’s Jewish). So I was named ‘ben Yitzchak’, son of Isaac - the father of Jakob who become Israel.

Gregorian Birthday: January the 16th, 1985

Hebrew Birthday: (Tevet the 23rd, 5745)

Birthplace: Winchester Hospital. Winchester, Massachusetts

Spouse:

Parents: Katherine M. Tyler of Lynn, Massachusetts and John Paul Perry of Billerica, Massachusetts.

Siblings: Fred Thomas Perry (19), John Arthur Perry (18) & ValerineAnn Katherine Perry (15), all still in Billerica, Massachusetts.

Childhood: I’ve grew up in Billerica. My earliest memories come from when we lived at 644 Boston Road. My very first memory was when I was around 4, I think, my mother teaching me how to read. It worked because by the time I was in kindergarten at Thomas Ditson Elementary School, I was on the Third Book of McGuffey’s Readers.

In August of 1991, our house at 644 Boston Road, went up in flames - my second earliest memory. We then moved to North Billerica and lived at 20 Oak Street. Our family stayed in that house until very recently. I went to Hajjar Elementary School, where my favorite teacher taught - Mrs. Hanlon. She was my second grade teacher.

Most of the rest of my childhood was pretty uneventful, until 1995 - the year my grandmother (Elizabeth Brown Tyler) passed away. I was ten and was very close to her. Losing her was very hard on my mother and I both. I became very close with my grandfather (Arthur Loren Tyler, who has since passed on earlier this year) after she died.

Teenage Years: I turned 13 in 1998. My life really started to pick up at this point! I met Dr. Harrison Milas Jones that year and he was the person who introduced me to Warren H. Manning State Forest. He served in the Navy as an Engineer during World War 2 and was very much an avid scientist. It was because of him that I became rather interested in all things nature. I had grown very fond of taking leave into the woods at Manning State Forest for hours at a time, borrowing Dr. Jones’ Audubon Society Field Guides and binoculars to learn about what lived there. With Dr. Jones and some friends of his and my own, we started the Warren H. Manning State Forest Club and dedicated ourselves to the work of caring for the 268 acre forest.

1998 was also a pretty trying year for me. It was during this time that I had discovered my sexual preference. It never really bothered me to come to the realization that I am gay in the way it does for many people. It was just fact. I came out to my older cousin, Jennifer (9 1/2 years my senior), first. She’s quite the ‘fag hag’ as they say. But somehow, though I never told a single soul at school until I was 15, every kid knew - and it made life at school a real living nightmare. I came out to my mom and dad in 2000. They both took it well, in fact. My father gave the I love you no matter what speech and my mother just said she always knew.

Being gay coupled with the fact that I never felt that the coursework was challenging enough for me led me to just stop going to school. Between the ages of 13 and 16, I think attended school for a total of 180 days. I spent most of my time either at the Billerica Public Library reading books about anything and everything, at the State Forest, or at Dr. Jones’ house reading about Quantum Physics and learning how to farm (vegetables) on his land. Basically, from age 13 until even now, I have homeschooled myself. Of course, in Massachusetts, if you don’t go to school, you’re a criminal.

I was placed in the custody of the Department of Social Services at the age of 15 for truancy (a high crime in Massachusetts!). I spent time in a number of fosters homes, but no foster parents beat Ilana and Richard Freedman. I spent weekends with them and learned all about the world of politics. I worked on Ilana’s 2000 campaign for State Senate and her 2002 & 2004 campaigns for U. S. Congress.

I turned 16 in 2001. My birthday was spent at home, with my family. My mom and dad threw a hell of a birthday party for me. All of my favorite people were there and it was a great time. My favorite memory of that day though, was when my father tried to start his van and the engine caught on fire! Everything turned out okay and no one was hurt - but it was definitely memorable.

A few months later in late April, my father turned 60 years old. He and Dr. Jones were helping me get ready (at 16, mind you...) to take on the Appalachian Mountain Trail from Maine to Georgia by backpack. But, on May 2, 2001 while I was at my dad’s best friend Al’s cabin in Alton, New-Hampshire, my father passed away.

From then on, I’ve lived on my own. I signed myself out of High School and enrolled in the Academy of Me.. I traveled the country a bit, visiting 38 of the 50 states between the ages of 16 and 19, by Greyhound Bus. I always sought out an opportunity to learn, no matter where I was.

I moved to New-Hampshire in late 2004, shortly after the Presidential Election. I’ve since lived in Nashua, Concord, Peterborough and West Manchester. I’ve met a ton of great people here, some of whom have become my greatest friends.

Present Day: Today I am living in West Manchester on Amory Street. I run my very own small business. And I am studying for my Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts. My free time is spent having fun with friends, hiking and camping.

Heroes: My dad, the late John Paul Perry. My whole life we grew up in what is considered the lower class and it was because of my dad that our family was and remains strong.
