Guiliani Claims An Evolution on Guns Rights
theatlantic.com via drudge ^ | 09/21/07 | Marc Ambinder

Glossing over the less appealing line items on his gun control resume, ex-NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani presented himself as sympathetic to the aims of the National Rifle Association and pledged, as president, to protect gun rights.

"Your right to bear arms is based on a reasonable degree of safety," he said. He indicated that he would oppose new efforts to tighten national gun laws. "I believe that law endforcement should focus on enforcing the laws that exist on the books as opposed to passing new extensions of laws," he said.

"A person's home is their castle. They have the right to protect themselves in their own home." Giulaini explained the lawsuit he initiated in 2000 against gun manufacturers by saying that he was "excessive in everyway that I could think of in order to reduce crime" but said that "intervening events" like September 11th had caused his views to evolve. "I think that lawsuit has gone in the direction that I don't agree it."

He cited a DC court ruling overturning the city's gun ban as instrumental to changing and "strengthening" his views on gun control. That ruling, Parker vs. the Distict of Columbia, was handed down just as Giuliani was beginning his presidential bid. Giuliani said that MoveOn.org's ad criticizing Gen. Petreaus was out of bounds and hinted that the group should face some sort of sanction.

"They passed a line that we should not allow an American political organizations to pass," he said. "We are at war right now, whether some people want to recognize it or not."

That's the thing about "evolution"--it's always changing. When/if he gets elected, he'll "evolve" beyond the 2ndA to "the right of the people to be safe from guns."

This [seasonal] pro-2ndA is a "survival" technique.

“Your right to bear arms is based on a reasonable degree of safety,” he said.

Or based upon if you are a sportsman or hunter, or if you really need a firearm.
Or depending upon whether or not I change my mind again.

Did he say “I was wrong to disarm law-abiding citizens in New York and to initiate and support harassing lawsuits against gun manufacturers?”

If not, all the “evolution” on this subject is worthless.
I’m not a one-issue voter, but Rudy is WRONG on so many issues... He’s just a 1980s style Democrat disguising himself as a Republican.

***”Your right to bear arms is based on a reasonable degree of safety,” he said.***

My right to bear arms came to me from God, which the Founding Fathers firmly believed. I just choose not to exercise that right right now, as I don’t have the immediate need for a gun.

What a load.

The right to bear arms (which to me means "carry them around with you as you go about your daily business") is a right that pre-exists and no government has the legitimate right to abrogate.

Since most gun laws on the books are un-Constitutional anyway, any enforcement of said laws is not a good thing.

If he were serious about the 2A, he would be campaigning to dismantle the gun laws on the books.

Know what? If elected President I could easily see Rooty evolve right back into his gun grabbing ways. Oh sure, there’d be some minor event upon which he would base his change of heart, but I believe he would be searching for just such an event to then declare that “drastic times calls for drastic measures” and then proceed to push a willing Dem Congress for gun control laws.

You just know I’m right about this.

There's no doubt in my mind you are right.

I used to claim to be a gun grabber. I have evolved to the point where now I just don’t claim it. (but I will do it in a heartbeat if elected, but don’t tell anyone) Our little secret....RG

I’m not buying his conversion.

Through distillation and concentration, I hear him say a gun in the home is OK, and that “reasonable common sense safety laws” are needed.

So no street carry, and trigger locks, storage requirements, mandatory training, microstamping and ballistic fingerprinting and invisible serial numbers and on and on are OK.

I’ll wait to hear more from him, I’d like him to speak for fifteen minutes, uninterrupted, on the second amendment.

"Your right to bear arms is based on a reasonable degree of safety," he said.

My right to bear arms is not subject ot moderna day negotiation by Marxists. You want to put restrictions on it; pass an Amendment.

Historically the right to bear arms is based in the standard weapons of the infantryman at the time the Constitution was created.

SAWs, M-16's, M-249's and M-203 grenade launchers should be completely unrestricted. Also, where are my hand grenades, sniper rifles, medium machineguns and rocket launchers?

humanizing moment: Giuliani's wife, Judith, called his cell phone, and the two proceeded to have a lovey-dovey chat. "Good bye, sweetheart, I love you," he said.
This wasn't staged or anything... hell, who doesn't take calls while on stage giving a speech?
It's not like his wife could have known he was scheduled to be speaking to the NRA at that very moment!
In fact, I was watching Shakespeare in the Park once and the actor playing Romeo took a call from his wife, too. It happens all the time. But I'll tell you what, Juliet was pissed!

Common sense is using two hands while firing.

Common sense is using eye and ear protection.

Common sense is pointing the gun away from anything that can be damaged until you are ready to shoot.

Common sense is controlling your breathing.

Rudy has no common sense when it comes to guns.
