OJ Simpson's prison conditions released

By Catherine Elsworth in Los Angeles

Last Updated: 2:35am BST 19/09/2007

OJ Simpson has traded a Las Vegas hotel room and leisurely mornings of golf for solitary confinement in a 7' by 14' cell, 4am wake-up calls, and just three to four hours of free time a day, also spent alone.

Details of the prison conditions facing the fallen sporting legend were revealed by Las Vegas police, who arrested Simpson on Sunday at the city's Palms hotel for his alleged role in an armed robbery last week.

The 60-year-old former American footballer is among 3,000 inmates at the Clark County Detention Centre.

Here, he is forced to wear a standard prison-issued jumpsuit and has been “classified as a Protective Custody/Isolation inmate, which means Simpson is kept from the general inmate population,” according to a police statement.

The disgraced star is therefore required to stay in his cell while the 36 other prisoners in his unit have their free time and is only be allowed out “when the other inmates go in for lock down.”

advertisementPolice also released pictures of the Simpson's spartan cell, which is equipped with a bunk, toilet, sink and a small desk, the recreation room attached to his unit and his jumpsuit.

The detailed descriptions of his jail conditions were issued as Las Vegas police Department stressed the former star would received no special treatment during his detention.

Charges against Simpson, who will appear in court today for an arraignment hearing, were detailed in a criminal complaint filed by Nevada prosecutors in Clark County yesterday, following the fallen icon’s arrest in connection with an alleged robbery last week.

Simpson and the three other men have been charged with seven felony offences: conspiracy to commit kidnapping; conspiracy to commit robbery; first degree kidnapping with use of a deadly weapon; burglary with a deadly weapon; robbery with a deadly weapon; assault with a deadly weapon and coercion with a deadly weapon.

They have also been charged with the misdemeanor offence of conspiracy to commit a crime.

If convicted on the most serious charges Simpson, 60, would face several years, possibly decades, in prison.

He has denied any wrongdoing and said no guns were used in last Thursday's incident, in which he claims he was trying to retrieve items of sports memorabilia that belonged to him.

If convicted, he could face up to 30 years in prison on each robbery count alone.

While in prison, Simpson is existing on an inmate's diet of three meals a day served at 4am, 10am and 4pm.

Breakfast includes fruit, a cup of toasted oats, sausage hash, bread with Margarine, milk and coffee while a typical lunch would be “spaghetti with sauce, a meat patty, green beans, two slices of white bread, one cookie and a fruit drink,” according the police statement.

For dinner, Simpson would have “Enchilada Casserole, Spanish rice, garden salad with dressing, two slices of bread, margarine, marble cake, and a fruit drink.”

The former athlete has made only one request - for reading glasses, which were provided to him.

Inmates are allowed a total of two books or magazines in their cell and up to five religious books.

So far, Simpson has had five visits from lawyers, three from private lawyers and two from officials from the Public Defender's office, and a visit from the detention centre's religious services minister, who brought him a Bible and a copy of the book Purpose Driven Life.

Police described Simpson's demeanour as “cooperative”, adding that “he continues to follow facility rules and regulations”.

Simpson, who was cleared of double murder in 1995 following the killing of his ex-wife and her friend, is accused of participating in an armed robbery of sports memorabilia from a Las Vegas hotel room on Thursday evening.

Simpson's lawyer accused police of subjecting his client to harsher treatment because of his notoriety.

"If it was anyone other than O.J. Simpson, he would have been released (on bail) by now," Yale Galanter said.

Two other men have so far been arrested in connection with the alleged robbery.

Lawyers for the family of Ron Goldman, who died along with Nicole Brown Simpson in the 1994 killings, have been to court to try to obtain the seized items of sports memorabilia.

The family wants the items to help satisfy a 33 million dollar wrongful death judgement made against Simpson in 1997.

Would blacks be so blindly supportive of OJ had he killed a black wife and her black friend?

I somehow doubt it. In THAT case, it would have been a crime. That his victims were white makes it a frame-up job by THE MAN.

How twisted the race hustlers have made our citizens.

I’m disappointed. I still haven’t heard the usual crowd getting it together again for old times’ sake.

C’mon roustabouts! No Justice, No Peace!

Anyone?

Well, maybe.

Remeber though, he has a history of fleeing and that might be excuse enough to deny him bail.

Before Paris Hilton I had always known the local lockups as the city jail and the county as the county jail, we didn’t think of using the word prison until you went to the state prison, when did all that change?

Now we call an overnight stay at the city jail, prison time.

I’d a paid for that kind of daily menu *oh wait, I did*

I loathe Simpson and were I Fred Goldman, I probably would have had him killed myself...carefully.

But if he took some guys with guns to go get back some stuff he can prove was taken from him or they owed him the money for them... while illegal I don’t think it rises to the hype.

Down here if you brandish a gun at someone who stole from you the charges would be far from draconian.

I hope I’m wrong or that the circumstances are different.

It’s obvious from the tape OJ knew the folks who had the stuff.

This is no regular armed occupied robbery.

You’re right.

It’s defining “hard time” down.

I think the goal is to make small time punks look like hardened thugs...

Too damned bad that this didn’t happen in Maricopa County {Phoenix) Arizona where Sherrif Joe Arpaio could make short work out of Simpson.

Can you imagine how wonderful it would be? We would all gleefully tune to the MSM to hear all the details of the green spoiled baloney sandwiches on moldy bread and the 115 degree heated tents served to his royal highness, O J Chimpson.

This is different than the last time, this time everybody is sure of who and what he is.

He is only in contact with law enforcement and I hope that they are showing him the cold indifference that would most infuriate him.

I get the feeling that without the jock adulation and masculine pack positioning, that OJ would be a very sad, baffled guy.

It’s a warm feeling knowing as I sit here in my nice comfy house Simpson is sitting in a not so comfy cell.

Simpson, who was cleared of double murder in 1995 following the killing of his ex-wife and her friend...

Jeezus, when the myth becomes legend, print the legend, whydontcha?

This is no mere semantic distinction - he was not cleared of double murder. He was prosecuted and acquitted. He was found not guilty by the standard of prosecution requiring proof beyond a reasonable doubt to establish guilt. This is not to say he was cleared.

I want to see him beaten to death by a fellow inmate. Justice delayed is justice denied.
