Vietnam Memorial Wall Defaced This Weekend (September 7-9, 2007)

Eyewitnesses to the damage, Concretebob, Mr. and Mrs. Trooprally ^ | September 9, 2007

Mrs. Trooprally called me this evening to tell me that she and her husband, as well as Concretebob, saw damage along almost the entire length of the Vietnam Memorial Wall. They found this damage this morning, when they walked through the area before participating in the September 11th Freedom Walk.

Concretebob was told by a National Park Service employee that the damage was done on Friday night. There was no police report taken or written about the vandalism, apparently. And the damage was still very much there today.

Here are a few of the photos that Mrs. Trooprally took this morning...

This first one is not so noticeable, but as they walked into the center, it got worse.

It looks like the person who did this walked along The Wall with some type of container, perhaps hidden at their side so that they could squirt the oily substance without being caught in the act.

The names along the lower part of The Wall appear to have taken the brunt of the damage.

Because of the reflective nature of The Wall, Mrs. Trooprally had a tough time capturing the extent of the damage. Mr. Trooprally said that the oily substance has discolored the shiny stone, but that it has been absorbed into the more porous area where the names are etched into The Wall.

Thank you for the ping. The more I see those pictures, the angrier I get. Woe unto the freaks who try anything like that this weekend! I am sure that FReepers would stomp them into pulp! Or have them arrested....guess that’s the civilized thing to do! LOL!

We will watch for the 2nd Part of this sacrilege! I sure hope it can be removed.

Looks to me like the battle to end the war is heating up-LITERALLY!

If the Eagles choose to incite a riot on September 15, they will make the ANSWER march far more powerful politically.

Just think-the image of Americans fighting Americans in the streets of Washington DC on international TV. Now imagine being George Bush trying to impress/threaten another head of state after such a scene.

Also, the Iraq Veterans Against the War congtingent no doubt will include plenty of people whose combat training is fresh. The Eagles are mostly rusty leftovers for wars years ago, and no doubt will shrink from engaging a more powerful force.

No doubt anarchists too will be ready and waiting-and after last time; experience people will know better than to leave vulnerable elders unguarded to face the Eagle; flailing flagpoles.

The Eagles beat up Code Pink and antiwar elders last time while refusing to fight the anarchist shield bloc. Gee-that sounds more like CHICKENS than Eagles to me! At the end of this audio, we also remind listeners that DPW's attempt to double that $10,000 fine for postering will still leave them holding the bag, collecting nothing while exposing the whole city to the ANSWER lawsuit.

Lastly, all that Happy Talk from Bush about the war is finally being silenced by things like that GAO report that call chances for political reconciliation in Iraq Bleak.

Leave blowing at night?

I don’t have the lawn crew schedule and have no reason to look for it as I am not making this absurd claim. Perhaps y’all should post the schedule for Friday night including a list of equipment used and the workers that were using said equipment. Maybe you can have SWAT perform a no-knock on them before midnight and clear all of this up.

Many veterans in town were disappointed to learn last week that someone had vandalized the town’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial, requiring the 15-month-old memorial to be sandblasted Wednesday.

The lyrics of a 1970s protest song and a reference to Iraq were scrawled on the monument in the Park. “War, what is it good for, absolutely nothin’,” was written in red marker along with a peace sign.

Near the base of the memorial where the phrase “our cause is just” is etched, a vandal wrote “just like in Iraq.”

The markings were made with some kind of felt marker, which soaked into the stone, Burke said yesterday.
