Plan To Ban 'Energy-Guzzling' Goods
Updated: 07:59, Sunday September 09, 2007

The Conservatives are to propose banning plasma screens and other 'energy-guzzling' electrical goods.

They plan to target white goods like fridges and freezers, as well as TVs, personal computers and DVD players that use higher amounts of energy or operate on stand-by.

TVs and computers could be hitThe ideas, to be revealed this week, come from a Conservative group set up by Tory leader David Cameron to develop policies to protect the environment.

And although the measures to make household electrical appliances more energy efficient are not binding on Mr Cameron, they are thought likely to be warmly received by him.

Under the proposals, a cap could be set on the energy use of each electrical appliance, and those exceeding limits could be banned from sale in the UK.

A new labelling requirement could be introduced to inform consumers of products' annual energy consumption compared with other similar appliances.

There could also be a ban on electrical goods with stand-by lights which can stay on indefinitely.

Some two percent of Britain's total electricity use is currently taken up by appliances left on stand-by rather than being switched off.

David Cameron is leading the Tories to political suicide. This is pure, unadulterated socialism.

I started to say you guys have a whole different kind of ‘conservative’ than we have. Then I thought about some of the guys here calling themselves conservatives.

Sure glad I hung onto those old antique ice tongs. I’ll need them to put blocks of ice into the “icebox.”

I wonder how much power is used by appliances in stand-by mode and those transformers that get hot when left plugged in.

It probably adds up to a large amount.

How much power is used by appliances in stand-by mode...an hot transformers?

The article said 2% in the UK. Here is a wild idea ;-) get Energy Star ratings for McMansions, and only build the ones with lower ratings, since construction and buildings use twice as much energy as transportation. A good example is your TV. It basically is never off. That’s, from what I understand, why it comes on so fast. A friend of mine saw a big difference when he put a switch on the TV that disconnected it from the power source. He did this because he lives in the mountains and runs everything from a generator. He found that with the TV turned of, at the TV itself, he was still using a lot of power. Once he disconnected his TV, stereo and other appliances from the power sourse, his power usage went way down.

Radio Shack sells a clamp-on ammeter with a line cord attachment so it should be easy to measure current draw. Multiply by your line voltage (at the outlet, 120 VAC in the US & Canada) to get wattage, then multiply by hours in a month to get watthours. Divide by 1000 to get kilowatt hours and multiply by your price-per-kilowatthour to determine actual monthly cost.

My guess is that it's a very miniscule amount.

Hey, someone is paying attention to me!!

Here is the TRUTH about GLOBAL WARMING and WHERE the FAULT LIES!

We are now a gadget-driven society. Little techie-gizmos are everywhere, not just the usual appliances of old. As such, everything we own needs power. But there is NO transfer of energy that is perfect. Energy is always lost. And that loss comes off as HEAT. Why is the world getting hot? Because of all of tech-stuff heating the planet. And what is the Number One technology in use today? THE INTERNET. And who is the father of the Internet??

That's right. AL GORE is responsible for Global Warming.

Its not so different than some “conservatives” here in the U.S. - trying to be more liberal than a liberal.

You need examples: McPain-Feingold; Medicare Drug Expansion, No-Child-Left-Behind (largest expansion of the “federal” education budget ever), Immigration Amnesty; McPain’s Al Queda civil rights amendments to defense legislation; etc, etc, etc, etc...............
