Exactly. Everyone in the DC area is gone during August, trying to escape the dog-gagging heat. Even the traffic on the Beltway is light. People in government and communications media are gone, which creates a domino effect as others find they can't get much done, so they leave too. In the rest of the US some people are also on vacation, and those who aren't are shopping for school supplies. If Thompson announced tomorrow, no one would notice.

Two weekends ago, I was trying to line up a younger teenager to come over 3-4 times a day for doggie care, while we were away for a long weekend. The first *eight* kids I tried, were gone on “last vacation for the summer” trips.
