I grew up homeschooled, we did school year round, eight week sessions with two week breaks between sessions. It gave us lots of free time, but not ridiculous blocks. Of course our school days were much shorter since you don’t need more than three hours daily before high school if you don’t waste time.
I think true free time for a kid is just as important as structured education. Time spent reading a book, building a fort, or playing with legos is as important as time spent studying the exports of Chile, for an eight year old.
It won’t work for our society and I’m sure many parents would love the schools to watch their kids even more full time, sadly. I hate back-to-school season; the joyful attitude of parents as they foist their spawn back on the government provided day care indoctrination system is sickening.

The earlier in, the faster they are indoctrinated, lol.
