Attention Democrats ("Fairness Doctrine", Taxes, "HillaryCare" and the 2008 Elections)
The Baker County Standard (Florida) ^ | July 18, 2007 | Andrew C. ‘’Andy’’ Hefty

In the interest of your fetish with the poorly named "Fairness Doctrine," I have decided to spend a little "equal time" giving the party of FDR some friendly advice.

Free of charge.

First and foremost, if you want to get into more power (after all, that’s the goal of every politician, right?), try standing for something. For the last thirty years, I have only heard of what you are opposed to. Opposing your opponent is no longer enough to convince voters what you plan to do with the power bestowed upon you by the "consent of the governed." You have to do more.

Specifically, national leaders who are advising presidential candidates have neglected to tell their clients, such as Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John Edwards that they will not be running against George W. Bush. This is an open election. There is no incumbent. State your case to the American people. And don’t feed us with the lines about how you’re planning to undo this Bush policy and re-enact that Clinton policy.

And these endless investigations are getting tiresome. Enough already!

Try something fresh.

All too often, "free" health care sounds good, but convincing me how to bring it about is another story. Here’s why.

When you offer anything (pick any product or service, private or government) to consumers, three factors come into play: quality, affordability, and availability. The trouble is that you can only have two. So for universal health care, a full one-seventh of our national economy, what are you going to force on us? Poor standards, high cost, or long lines? What if we don’t want what you offer to us -- or dare I say force upon us?

Think long and hard about this because you cannot guarantee all three. It’s just not feasible. And bear in mind that the only things the government can effectively manage is military conquest and public safety. Everything else the government touches has what I call the "Anti-Midas Touch." You can imagine what it turns into for yourself.

Now, what’s so wrong with individual achievement? Why do we as Americans have to be grouped together with others in every aspect of life? I am tired of hyphenated-Americanism. Martin Luther King envisioned each individual being judged by their individual merits. Why can’t you?

And quit insisting on "rolling back" the Bush tax cuts. You have neglected one simple fact: It’s not your money! Whether you are ignorant or negligent is no concern, but the dreaded rich pay more than their fair share. The last thing anyone aspiring toward prosperity needs is the threat that the fruit of their labors will be confiscated just because someone else doesn’t have what they do. Besides, you can’t ‘’roll back’’ a tax cut. Your play on words is simply a smokescreen for increased taxes. If you want to sap the taxpayers, just say so.

Before committing to some new program to "right" the latest "wrong" (translation: Hollywood fad), please ask yourself three questions. How much will it cost? Who is going to pay for it? Can the private sector do it better?

Returning price controls and tightening the energy restrictions won’t do a thing if we fail to tap into new sources of energy. You have a problem. Unions, especially the Teamsters, want the jobs that drilling in ANWR and other places can provide. Environmentalists and socialists would rather we go back to living in caves first. Which way do you plan to choose?

The next time a Democratic-leaning journalist wants to venture outside our borders to extol the virtues of another country, I suggest you encourage them to go somewhere other than Cuba, Venezuela, and France. Try sending someone to Singapore to tout the intrinsic worth of a truly free-market economy. How about a junket to Japan where innovation and strong family ties are considered? Quit venturing to the home of a socialist dictator where their local journalists who dare to criticize are jailed -- or worse.

No, I am not asking you to be Republicans. I am asking you to be intellectually genuine. You cannot tell me that art and health care are more important to oppressed people than freedom and prosperity. Sorry, I refuse to believe it.

Scrap the idea of regulating talk radio. Leave the concept of "fairness" to parents. We grown-ups can do a very simple thing if we don’t like what we see or hear on TV or radio: shut it off. It’s a constitutional right. If the American people like listening to Rush, Boortz, and Hannity, who are you to stop us? Let’s face it. If Democrats force "equal time" on radio stations, then the station managers will simply shut down the talk-radio side of their business. That’s not fairness; that’s silencing the opposition. And far be it from me to accuse you of acting like Hugo Chavez.

Finally, return to honest, open debate.

The last time we heard Congress actually conduct an Oxford-style debate on any issue was in the early 90s when they were debating "free" health care. Let’s see who’s up for an intellectual challenge. Quit the rhetorical jabs. Shun the name-calling. Ban any politician from the press conferences who will tell voters that their opponents are kicking grandma out of her nursing home and stealing food from their children’s mouths. That’s not debate. That’s slander.

I don’t have time for that.

Writer is not very well informed. It is well know that they stand for change. Change to what, they never say. But they ALL stand for change.

The only problem is they are stupid. They don’t stand for anything and won’t stand for anything except, of course, themselves and how they can fatten their own pocketbooks and power.

They are already done themselves in.

WHY DOESN’T CONGRESS AND THE OTHER POLITICIANS LEAVE THE WAR TO THE ARMED FORCES AND SEE HOW FAST WE COULD WIN? CONGRESS SHOULD NEVER INTERFERE IN WARS.
TAXES CAN TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES WITHOUT DEMS. ‘HELP’.
NATIONAL HEALTH CARE SHOULD BE TRIED OUT ON THOSE IN CONGRESS THAT FAVOR THE BILL.
