If Chet is white, it could mean that she was being racist. Never mind, I forgot that minorities are not racist.
Norfolk,VA used to have signs on their lawns “Salior nad Dogs keep off the grass”
Like I said, if I think I may need it, I will have it. Having been to these events, in my opinion, this guy did not need to open carry. I have known people that like to open-carry, because it makes them feel empowered and they tend to show-off, those are the types that worry me, and in my opinion, give the anti-gun people more voice...I don’t like either of them or what they do, so I comment.
I couldn’t agree more! I truly find it pathetic that some “so-called” conservatives think that what the cops in Norfolk did was okay and that when told to leave, Chet Szymecki and his family should have done that to avoid a confrontation.......sheesh!
Life is full of first time events...you call them as you see them, and we each see differently.
I would never risk my family on the presumption I won’t need the weapon today. No one ever knows the day he will need it. Have been killed in church for crying out loud.
VCDL = Virginia Citizens Defense League
Or why didn't he bow and scrape to his 'betters" and admit that he is no more than a medieval serf if he doesn't have the right to defend himself with deadly force if necessary?
The point is, the man was NOT breaking any law and in fact was well within the authority granted him by the VA legislature, which carries considerably more weight in a court of law than the anti-gun bias of a local LE department.
The Sheriff's thugs no doubt knew that as well as he does, but they chose to use Gestapo-like intimidation tactics to suppress an act which they don't like but is not unlawful. Outrages like this only create more hate and disrespect for all law enforcement personnel, some of whom seem to believe that their badge and uniform somehow elevates them above the law they were hired to enforce.
;-)
What I was struggling to say was that preparation for carrying includes not only preparation for using the darn thing, but also extensive preparation for ways to avoid using it. And with your insights I am adding preparation for defusing possible contretemps with the fuzz.
The article says the victim was "in shock" or something like that. To me that says he was not prepared and/or ill-informed.
Isn't the maxim "You fight as you train?" Training includes visualization. I'm going to visualize cops saying,"Would you please leave?" and me saying, "Right away," and then calling Phil van Cleave.

Yeah, that’s the ticket. Leave it in the car so that it becomes a stolen item. Think about it, if you are in a festival for hours how long could the gun be in the hands of a criminal? At least when it is on you and it is taken, you will know when it happens and with all those cops around your shouts, etc. will prompt a quick response and recovery of the gun. Use some common sense when you post.
Hope it never bites you in the rear. Have you gone to the post #32 site?
>We delegate the duty of charity to the government.<
This is an feel good action that politicians have taken upon themselves with our money, one that I object to every chance I get.
>We delegate, more and more, the duty to care for our elders and our young to the government.<
This is a result of our me first society. One that I also object to.
You made the following statement relative to your confidence in the safety of the event.
The number of instances where anyone has needed a weapon, at these festivals, is zero.
I made my comment pointing our your naive attitude and citing an event. It may not be what we are talking about here but you are the one who made the statement in an effort you support your argument.....
I'm not trying to excuse, I'm just saying there's a scenario in which throwing her weight around might not have been what started the mess.
Agree 100%
I’ve NEVER seen anybody openly carrying at any sort of festival anywhere in Virginia. And I’ve been to many. The Norfolk police were stupid, but I imagine they werre also getting lots of nervous people coming up to them and reporting this guy walking around with a gun. Firearms at a crowded family event just seems like a really dumb idea.
Interestingly the Norfolk SO includes an recruitment ad which promises a starting salary of <$30k.
I’ve never had a face to face incident with VA LEO’s but what I have observed certainly displayed to me that they are a badge strong group.
Myself I prefer officers who approach with a smile first, then the club if necessary.
