What kinds of things do you think of when you hear "communications consulting"?

Speechwriting? Message strategy?

Well, "communications consulting" is how presidential candidate Mitt Romney recorded $300 in payments to a California company that describes itself as "a mobile beauty team for hair, makeup and men's grooming and spa services."

I pay about $15 for a no frills haircut, including the tip I throw in. That's about $180/year.

They never mentioned Kerry’s botox.
Nor the silky pony’s - or the fact that silky pony pays over $400.00 for a haircut.

Clinton’s haircut cost more. So did Edward’s shampoo. Then, there’s Hillary’s face lift . . .

And Kerry's Botox... and Uncle Albert's orange rouge....

$300 in payments

$150 x 2 = $300. Reasonable price for a service that makes housecalls.

If you consider the amount of money that public figures need to spend on speech coaches, demographic research, tailoring, etc., $300 sounds like a pretty shrewd investment if you ask me.

From the gossip rag the has brought us eight — and counting — articles on John Edwards' haircut, we have more critical news!

Does anyone know where we can find a working press? Ours is broken.

When a consultant makes a call they charge a minimum — usually 4 hours. That makes it $75.00 per hour — cheap!

restornu, the point is that Mitt paid for a haircut and makeup job and called it “communications consulting” rather than a haircut and makeup job, perhaps to dodge Edwards-like criticism.

Not as bad as taking money from the American Museum Council but even if the bowl aint as big the flavor is the same.

I agree, this is seemingly trivial, but it was silly of Mitt to let this show up on traceable campaign documents. If he really felt he needed makeup advice, he should have been smart enough to have paid the lousy three big ones out of his own pocket as a personal expense, as it would have been for any of the rest of us.

Has he been unaware of the drubbing that Edwards takes for his own beauty expenses? I would think that the "I Feel Pretty" YouTube video of Edwards primping would be used at least once a week by all Republican candidates' staffs as a tension reliever!

Just because we don’t travel in those area of communication does not mean how he categorized it is correct when it is a part of the package.

It’s actually pretty clever on Mitt’s part. He knows full well that if he got a $300 haircut he’d be compared to Edwards, so he tried to cover the expense in another way. So it came out anyway, and the media is trying to make it look like Mitt was trying to hide a $300 haircut (which, I think, he was).

People in the public eye frequently spend big bucks on appearance- even Edwards does not deserve to be criticized (Clinton was too). I agree with you on that, anybody whose job it is to be in public does (or should do, Dennis Kucinich!) the same thing. I bet Jay Leno spends more than $300 per week on hair and makeup. When I give a talk at a university or present a paper at a conference I at least get a trim (if Kerry was going to be in the audience I’d get a manicure too).

Since it is so common, though, there is no reason to attempt to obfuscate the issues.
