I read the article but for some reason I don’t believe Mr. Matte. Mr Gothard (hehehe) did not chase Matte to his house for no reason. We don’t have the other side story.

Have you ever lived near a college town? All the idyots do is get drunk, party, and have fights! for no reason.

I spent 9 years in Iowa, and I wasn't even charged with anything.

I agree. There is no duty to retreat.

Check this sh!t out. I’m no cheerleader for the CPD, but it sounds like the weenie “victim” was asking for trouble and the off-duty cop took care of business like they do in Chicago.

Yeah...they’re drunk. That’s the A #1 reason.

From the facts admitted by the bench, this is a clear case of self defense and will almost certainly be overturned on appeal.

The judge needs to be disbarred.

Yep. Often for absolutely no reason. I live in a college town near a military base.

Young men, young women and beer....mix them up and watch what happens...

So now, in Iowa, american citizens are supposed to ignore being assaulted, and retreat, eh?
What a crock.

“When the case went to a bench trial in December, Dubuque County Judge Monica Ackley found that Chicago Police Officer Mike Mette “was not the initial aggressor of this incident,” Jake Gothard was. Nevertheless, Judge Ackley ruled that Mette was guilty, because even after Gothard struck him three times, Mette should have just ignored it and retreated.”

Here’s an example of why one should choose a trial by jury. So you don’t have ignoramuses like Judge Ackley deciding your innocence or guilt.

An article with more detail linked in post #16 above. I’d tend to believe the officer and not the drunk.

I am not defending Mr. Gothard (hehehe). I bet both were #hit face drunk. In Texas this whould never have made trial.
