Therefore should be term limited with short terms, such as one term of 6 years in the Senate, and three terms of 2 years in the House.
But first we have a major problem, see www.foavc.org and www.article5.org
For overall background see www.tenurecorrupts.com
That’s too short, two 6 year terms for the Senate, and six 2 year terms for the House.
If only Newt got this done.
We already have term limits, they’re called elections.
I agree on term limits, however I disagree with your proposal.
Only one 6 year term for Senate is way too short. I’d agree on two 6 year terms for Senate and four two year terms for House.
Too short and too few terms are almost as bad as long indefinite terms. Representatives also need some time to get into the stuff.
The Founders were very smart and already gave us a legitimate form of term limits. We call it, elections.
The will of the people shall prevail.
This is not something we should consider amending the Constitution for. If you don’t like a candidate, vote him/her out of office.
It sounds nice, but we’re trying it here in CA and it’s not really working out so well.
There are arguments on both sides. I would note a couple things:
First, election laws are crafted to protect incumbents, to tilt the playing field in their favor (that was the real reason McCain/Feingold passed Congress, because it made it tougher on challengers).
Second, while we can get rid of our own local Congress member or our two Senators, we can do nothing about un-electing the rest of ‘em. That doesn’t justify term limits, but unless you live in Henry Waxman’s district, it’s not the local guy who’s the problem.
Also, reduce the size of the Senate to 50, the size of the House to 200, and tell both houses that they can only meet 50 days out of the year, and they are getting a 40% pay cut.
Our only control is the vote, and the general electorate's dereliction of duty in that regard represents a serious challenge to those of us that care. It's such a challenge to us that the dimlibs and Bush were obviously counting on it to get the scamnesty bill passed, and frankly I'm euphorically surprised that enough grass roots people got off their duffs and made sure their senators got the message. If we could muster that kind of passion and activity every election cycle, we could achieve almost the same results as term limits.
Now’s a good time for this, when the public is furious with the politicians in Washington and ready to kick them all out.
One term for both Senate and House, then back to the auto dealership with ‘em.
Today’s victory on amnesty argues against term limits.
It was the threat of the loss of their jobs that turned key Senators.
If they knew they were term limited out, they very well might not care...and be even more susceptible to the persuasions of those who were going to feather their nest after they were out of office.
It’s worth considering.
I’ve always been against term limits because we already have a way to impose term limits — elections, of course.
But then I started thinking about the balance of power in Washington. Term limiting the president without term limiting Congress vastly upsets that balance of power.
So here’s where I stand: if we’re going to term limit the president, then we must term limit members of Congress. Term limit ‘em all, or none at all.
id say 2 six year terms for senator (MAX 12)
id say 6 two year terms for house (max 12)
id make potus term six years rather than four and a max of two terms (12 yrs)
Id cut senate to one per state. Id reduce house to 300 (1mm per rep)
id make Supreme court appointments for 15 years, no more.
Term limits?
you bet! vote out the incumbent every time.

"Wants" are not "rights" by definition; it is the duty of our Government to provide for that which we agree for them to provide under the terms of our Constitution, and only because we, the people, agree to be bound by the terms of that document. Everything else is an exercise in coercion and servitude. Term limits would not be required if people were not held to be entitled to things they have not themselves paid for, and if they agreed to pay fair value for that which they could not provide themselves.
1 maybe 2 years and OUT!
Pay them minimum wage for the privilege of serving. Provide them meals, room and board.
Randomly drug test them like everyone else.
No more closed door meeting on our time.
Monitor all activities.
