June 25, 2007 -- A Brooklyn mother and father got the shock of their lives when school officials informed them their brilliant 11-year-old girl was denied admission to an elite public school - solely because she's of Indian descent. "I feel bad because I would have gotten in if I was white," Nikita Rau lamented over her failed bid to attend the Mark Twain School, IS 239, in Coney Island, a magnet school for gifted students.
It turns out Mark Twain - unlike all but one other city public school - admits students according to racial quotas established in 1974 by a federal judge who ordered the school's desegregation.

If we could just get that down to say 10% or better yet 0% then all the worlds and in particular the US’s problems would be cured. I’ve always wondered when all this quota, multicultural push started just what is the “right” amount of whites? In the 1950’s the US was 90% white. That was/is considered evil. It is now less then 66% and quickly moving below that. What is the “right” number? 50%? 25%? How will we know?
I’m sure the ACLU is already working on it.
Dot ...Not feather
It goes to show that it's more about who's considered privledged, not the color of one's skin.

Sorry everyone, slow computer.
No dot...must be pull start.
Don’t think this is true anymore? CA got rid of such things to my knowledge. and replaced it with something equally obnoxious. The UC now only admits the top 3% from each highschool. So if you come from a highschool that is very competitive (like my son’s where 35 kids graduating with straight A’s isn’t uncommon and they EARNED them) - a large number of highly qualified kids won’t be able to attend because the school does such a good job of turning out large numbers of such kids.
The school is 40% Asian, 40% Indian, 20% other. That is the makeup of our neighborhood - and the school reflects this. These communities highly value education and they push their kids HARD to succeed in school. This is the MAIN reason the school does so well!
You don’t have the UC admission policy correct.
Local option — the class rank guarantee — means only a seat in the UC SYSTEM, and, effectively, only gets one a seat in the least-competitve UC campuses (Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara Riverside and Merced). Virtually no local option students are admitted at Berkeley or UCLA, and few at the middle tier (Davis, San Diego and Irvine).
The top UCs still practice affirmative action, of course, but in a watered-down “obstacles overcome” system. While still biased against whites and Asians, this system at least avoids the worst excess of affirmative action: admitting as “underrepresented” the children of already successful and well-educated parents. (Stanford, of course, will still give more points to Colin Powell’s kids than to those of a melanin-challenged Wal-Mart checker.)
It’s in Coney Island after all.
That 5% affirmative action set aside caused many well qualified students to be turned away to make space. Many of those turned away were Asians with great GPA and SAT scores. It was a total travesty.
True - I guess I was thinking there were 3 races - Caucasion, Asian, and Negroid. Are there more than that? Would Indian be considered Asian?
“The unconstitutional rejection of my client constitutes discrimination.”
This should have read “The rejection of my client constitutes unconstitutional discrimination.”
Not all discrimination is unconstitutional.
Yes. British newspapers frequently refer to “Asians” when they are talking about Indians... Strange but true...
Indians are Caucasians- that is 90% of India’s population, when viewed by race classifcation are White. I know it appear to be inaccurate but do the research.
They are not Negroids, Mongoloids or Austronesians (some consider this to be a race) which leaves Caucasians.
Indians are for the most part dark skinned Caucasians, although there are many Indians who are very light skinned.
Once again the ruling elite just do not know what they are doing.
Who is John Gault and where is he?
What a bunch of whiners.
“I feel bad because I would have gotten in if I was white,”
“It could hurt her chances of going to Harvard, Yale or Princeton.”
Pretty high ambitions for the parents of an 11 year old who scored only a 79 on the admissions test.
The truth is, when compared to her peers, she underperformed. It’s hard for parents to cope with this, but sometimes their little darlings aren’t all that, visions of Harvard and Yale notwithstanding.
I don't know but I'm guessing everyone would get priority over her if she refused to play the game.
I was under the impression that racial preferences had been banned by the Supreme Court years ago. Why is this continuing?
