Racist Manhunt in Small Town Germany
Der Spiegel ^ | 08/21/07 | Phillipp Wittrock

Posted on 08/21/2007 9:32:21 PM PDT by design engineer

The victims were all from India — their attackers, possible neo-Nazis. A small town in Saxony confronts the possibility of right-wing extremists in their midst.

.....

.....

.....

Early on Sunday morning following the annual Mügeln municipal festival, Singh and seven of his compatriots were pursued across town — a regular manhunt — following an apparently harmless jostle on the dance floor. An angry mob made up of dozens of festival-goers chased down the Indians before severely beating them — shouting racist insults all the while. Six of the pursued made it into Singh’s pizzeria and locked themselves in. The rioters kicked in the front and back doors. Windows were smashed and Singh’s car was demolished. Only a large squad of 70 policemen was able to force the romping crowd back, although the policemen were themselves attacked using bottles, glasses and benches. The violent rampage left 14 wounded, including four of the attackers, two policemen and all eight Indians.

Toronto police issue letter-bomb warning

Aug 21, 2007 05:49 PM
Canadian press

Toronto police are investigating after a man was injured by a letter
bomb.

Police say the man received an envelope at his home in the area of
Victoria Park and Lawrence Avenues on the night of Aug. 11.

When he opened the package, it exploded, causing injuries to his
hands.

An envelope with a petroleum-type odour was found at another Toronto
home in the area of Yonge St. and Sheppard Ave. on Aug. 19, but
police were called and it was safely detonated.

Both packages were bubble-wrapped envelopes, had properly addressed
courier receipts, and contained petroleum-type fluid.

Police are warning members of the public to be cautious if they
receive unexpected packages or envelopes and to contact police if
they are suspicious of the contents. Suspicious envelopes and
packages should not be handled or moved.

[update, more details, I could almost hear all those people saying “thank you, God”, for he had to have been busy holding back the fire, until the pilot and co-pilot escaped too.....granny]

Taiwanese pilot gets credit for emergency evacuation of stricken jet

TAIPEI, Taiwan: (AP) The pilot of the Taiwanese plane that caught fire
after
landing in southern Japan supervised an emergency evacuation of
passengers
in the moments before the jet exploded in flames, an official said
Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday, Taiwan’s Civil Aviation Authority said the aircraft
suffered mechanical problems on two occasions earlier this month, but
that
they were unrelated to the incident in Japan.

The stricken plane’s 157 passengers and eight-member crew barely
escaped
with their lives when a fire engulfed it on the tarmac of Okinawa’s
Naha
airport.

Yu Chien-kuo, pilot of China Airlines’ Boeing 737-800, jumped from the
two-story cockpit window after he saw that all passengers had been
evacuated
from the plane, said Johnson Sun, the airline spokesman.

Co-pilot Tseng Ta-wei jumped from the same window less than a second
ahead
of the pilot, Sun said.

“Our pilots were the last to depart,” he said. “They told the flight
attendants to execute an evacuation and help passengers escape within
the
shortest possible time.”

“They did what they should have and acted with great bravery,” he said.

The entire evacuation took three minutes after ground crew told the
pilot
they spotted fires on the jet’s wings, Sun said.

No one was seriously injured in Monday’s accident. The fire started in
one
of the engines just as the plane pulled into place at the airport
parking
ramp. With the plane’s wings and midsection ablaze, passengers escaped
to
the tarmac on inflated emergency chutes.

Once the aircraft was empty, the jet erupted in a fireball that sent
flames
and an enormous cloud of black smoke billowing into the sky.

In a faxed statement on the incident, Taiwan’s CAA said the plane had
problems with a sensor connected to one of its wing flaps on Aug. 4. It
said
the problem recurred the next day.

However, it said, the sensor problem was not related to Monday’s
explosion.

“The malfunctions were due to sensors attached to the front rim of the
aircraft wing and it is not related to the fuel system that possibly
caused
the airplane fire,” the statement said.

Taiwanese media said among the last to escape the stricken aircraft was
a
flight attendant who was seen fallen on the tarmac as the plane
exploded
behind her.

Sun confirmed media reports that China Airlines crew failed to inform
passengers of the evacuation through its in-flight public address
system.

“A broadcast of the kind could cause some kind of situation, and the
evacuation might as well have been conducted by the crew right away,”
he
said.

Yu flew for the Taiwanese air force for 20 years before retiring six
years
ago to work for the commercial airline, officials said.

The Okinawa fire is a setback to China Airlines, which in recent years
appeared to have improved on a troubled safety record among
international
carriers.

A China Airlines 747 crashed in 2002 as it flew Taipei to Hong Kong,
leading
to 225 deaths, and some 450 people died in China Airlines accidents
during
the 1990s.

Watch out for birds, Spanish pilots warned

A Spanish airline has warned pilots to be extra careful when taking off
from
Madrid after a number of recent collisions with large birds forced them
to
carry out emergency landings, a report said Sunday.

Since July 2006 at least four aircraft from national airline Iberia
have
carried out emergency landings at Madrid-Barajas airport, one of
Europe’s
busiest, after hitting vultures or eagles, the El Pais newspaper said.

The airline has told pilots not to fly faster than 250 knots when
flying
below 10,000 feet (3,000 metres) in the area in order to limit the
impact
from hitting the birds, the paper said.

Aircraft taking off and landing at new runways opened two years ago at
Madrid-Barajas fly over a protected bird sanctuary that is home to
large
numbers of vultures and eagles weighing up to eight kilos (18 pounds).

Fuel Truck Hits Airplane at Key West Airport

KEY WEST, FL — A plane parked on the runway at Key West International
Airport was damaged today when a fuel truck ran into it.

Airport Security Director Jerome Fain said the incident took place at
6:45
a.m.

The plane, a 1996 Beechcraft belonging to Gulfstream Airlines (which
flies
as the Continental Connection) was on the runway, with only the pilot
aboard, waiting to be fueled. The fuel truck was approaching the plane
when
the driver, 23 year old Manuel Estevez, apparently fell asleep at the
wheel.
As the pilot watched, the truck slowly approached the plane, then ran
into
it, hitting the propeller, the engine and the plane itself.

Estevez was issued a citation for careless driving. The plane is still
grounded at the airport, pending repairs.

3 arrested in elaborate bomb hoax in Cape Girardeau - MO

Breaking News Posted on Tue, Aug. 21, 2007 03:39
3 arrested in elaborate bomb hoax in Cape Girardeau
The Associated Press
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. | The scheme was elaborate: Divert police
attention to a planned bank robbery by threatening to bomb six
buildings, including the police station and three schools.

In the end, the buildings were safe and three suspects were
arrested. Their names were not released pending formal charges.

Around 9 a.m. Friday, Cape Girardeau police began receiving calls
warning that bombs were planted at police headquarters, a retirement
home, a post office, Cape Girardeau Central High School, Central
Middle School and Cape Girardeau Montessori School.

The Southeast Missouri Regional bomb Squad was activated and nearly
two dozen city officers were sent to the threatened sites, said
police Sgt. Barry Hovis. An FBI agent and several agents from the
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms assisted.

Police found what they called “hoax” bombs, or those without
explosive devices, at four of the sites.

The FBI said the threats were meant to keep police busy so the
suspects could rob a Cape Girardeau bank. No robbery occurred there,
but the men are suspected of robbing a bank hours later in Lilbourn,
also in southeast Missouri.

Police chased the robbers on foot and immediately caught two of
them, authorities said. The third suspect was captured later in a
wooded area.

Taliban chief says Bin Laden alive: video

Wed Aug 22, 4:01 AM ET

A top Taliban commander said Al-Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden is alive and well, according to US-based analysts monitoring extremist publications.

“All praise be to Allah, he is extremely healthy and active,” the commander Mansour Dadullah said in a video interview, according to a transcript of the video’s English subtitled translation, released Tuesday by the analyst IntelCenter.

Dadullah, whose brother Mullah Dadullah was also a top commander in the Afghanistan-based militants and was killed this year, said he had been contacted by Bin Laden, the man blamed for the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

“I received a message from him in which he advised me ‘I must follow Mullah Dadullah and continue the same activities so that the mujahedeen (Islamic fighters) may not weaken,” he said, according to the transcript.

The video is dated June 15, 2007, IntelCenter said.

Authorities said Mon 20 Aug 2007, 4 people from Calgary became ill
after eating contaminated baby carrots. Costco recalled the carrots
after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a public warning Fri
17 Aug 2007, over shigella contamination.

Dr. Richard Musto, acting medical officer of health for Calgary
Health Region, confirmed Mon 20 Aug 2007, all 4 Canadian cases of
shigella were reported in the Calgary area. The public warning was
updated Monday [20 Aug 2007] to include product sold in Manitoba as
well as at Costco stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario,
Quebec, and Newfoundland.

The warning includes Los Angeles Salad Company Genuine Sweet Baby
Carrots, which come from Mexico. The carrots are sold in 672 gm/1.5
lb bags carrying codes: ITM 50325 and UPC 8 31129 00137 7, with

The public warning issued on 17 Aug 2007 has been updated to include
additional information on product distribution. The affected product
was also sold in Manitoba. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)
is warning the public not to consume Los Angeles Salad Company Baby
Carrots described below because the product may be contaminated with
_Shigella_.

The affected product, Los Angeles Salad Company Genuine Sweet Baby
Carrots, is labelled as product of Mexico and imported by Los Angeles
Salad Company. It is sold in 672 gm/1.5 lb plastic bags bearing ITM
50325, UPC 8 31129 00137 7 and ‘sell-by’ dates up to and including 13
Aug 2007.

This product was sold in Costco stores in British Columbia, Alberta,
Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland. There have been 4
confirmed illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

Food contaminated with _Shigella_ may not look or smell spoiled.
Shigellosis infection can cause diarrhea (which may be bloody),
fever, nausea, and vomiting. Illness usually lasts from 4 to 14 days.
In some persons, especially very young and very old people, and
people with compromised immune systems, the diarrhea can be more
severe. Infection can occur after eating and drinking food and water
that is contaminated with _Shigella_ and can be passed from person to
person.

Costco Wholesale, Ottawa, Ontario, is voluntarily recalling the
affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the
effectiveness of the recall. For more information, consumers and
industry can call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342 / TTY 1-800-465-7735
(8:00 am to 8:00 pm Eastern time, Monday to Friday).

[The species of _Shigella_ involved in this posting is not stated.
Most ProMED-mail reports regarding shigellosis are included in the
Cholera, diarrhea & dysentery reports, but since this posting
involves an active foodborne outbreak, it is posted as a stand-alone
post.

The following is abstracted from the US FDA (Food & Drug
Administration) Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, Bad Bug
Book
http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~mow/chap19.html

“The illness caused by shigellosis accounts for less than 10 percent
of the reported outbreaks of foodborne illness in this country.
_Shigella_ rarely occurs in animals; principally it is a disease of
humans except other primates such as monkeys and chimpanzees. The
organism is frequently found in water polluted with human feces. The
infective dose is as few as 10 cells depending on age and condition
of host. The _Shigella_ spp. are highly infectious agents that are
transmitted by the fecal-oral route.

Associated foods include salads (potato, tuna, shrimp, macaroni, and
chicken), raw vegetables, milk and dairy products, and poultry.
Contamination of these foods is usually through the fecal-oral route.
Fecally contaminated water and unsanitary handling by food handlers
are the most common causes of contamination.”

Clearly unlike foodborne infections in humans due to _Salmonella_
(except for typhoid fever), _E. coli_ O157, and _Campylobacter_,
shigellosis is associated with food contamination with human, not
animal feces. - Mod.LL]

UN World Conference Against Racism Ramps up for More Jew Hatred

Time sure goes fast. It was six years ago that the UN ran it conference promoting hatred of Jews called the 2001 UN World Conference Against Racism and next week the planning committee for the 2008 conference begins its preparatory meetings.

For those of you who don’t remember the “joy” of the last meeting.

In the weeks prior to the conference, the United States had warned organizers that it would withdraw from Durban if the early anti-Jewish charges and the condemnations of Israel remained unchallenged. After four days of fruitless negotiations, the U.S. delegation withdrew on September 3, midway through the conference, unable to turn the focus of the conference back to its original goals. The aim to combat discrimination and intolerance worldwide was ironically superceded by a bigoted campaign to single out one nation for criticism.

The September 3 statement of withdrawal of U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell read:

Today I have instructed our representatives at the World Conference Against Racism to return home. I have taken this decision with regret, because of the importance of the international fight against racism and the contribution that the Conference could have made to it. But, following discussions today by our team in Durban and others who are working for a successful conference, I am convinced that will not be possible. I know that you do not combat racism by conferences that produce declarations containing hateful language, some of which is a throwback to the days of “Zionism equals racism;” or supports the idea that we have made too much of the Holocaust; or suggests that apartheid exists in Israel; or that singles out only one country in the world—Israel—for censure and abuse.

Copies of the anti-Semitic work, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, were sold on conference grounds; anti-Israel protesters jeered participants chanting “Zionism is racism, Israel is apartheid,” and “You have Palestinian blood on your hands”; fliers depicting Hitler with the question, “What if I had won?” circulated among conference attendees. The answer: “There would be NO Israel and NO Palestinian bloodshed.”

On September 3, in the Israeli official proclamation, delivered by Head of the Israeli Delegation Ambassador Mordecai Yedid, Deputy Foreign Minister Rabbi Michael Melchior wrote:

Racism, in all its forms, is one of the most widespread and pernicious evils, depriving millions of hope and fundamental rights. It might have been hoped that this first Conference of the 21st century would have taken up the challenge of, if not eradicating racism, at least disarming it: But instead humanity is being sacrificed to a political agenda. ... Can there be a greater irony than the fact that a conference convened to combat the scourge of racism should give rise to the most racist declaration in a major international organization since the Second World War?

In addition to the UN government conference against racism, Durban simultaneously hosted a UN conference of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The NGO conference, according to the UN, aimed to publicize the “voices of the victims.” In this forum, the Jewish Caucus proposed that Holocaust denial and anti-Jewish violence caused by Jewish support for Israel be labeled forms of anti-Semitism. The proposal was almost unanimously defeated. Anne Bayefsky, a NGO participant, and a representative of the International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists, commented. “The only group that voted for it was the Jews. Of all the ‘voices of the victims’ put into the resolution, only one voice was deleted - the Jewish voice.”

Bayefsky reported, “Like all Jewish participants, I felt concern for my safety. The Jewish Center in Durban was forced to close because of threats of violence.” During an NGO discussion on Palestinian issues, representatives of human rights organizations asked Bayefsky to leave: “They explained to me that as a representative of a Jewish organization, I was biased and couldn’t be counted on to act in the interest of general human rights.”

The representatives at the NGO conference removed a key paragraph on anti-Semitism by unanimous vote, prompting a Jewish Caucus walk out. The removed paragraph read:

We are concerned with the prevalence of Anti-Zionism and attempts to delegitimize the State of Israel through wildly inaccurate charges of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing and apartheid, as a virulent contemporary form of anti-Semitism leading to firebombing of synagogues, armed assaults against Jews, incitements to killing, and the murder of innocent Jews, for their support for the existence of the State of Israel, the assertion of the right to self determination of the Jewish people and the attempts, through the State of Israel, to preserve their cultural and religious identity.

Soon after the American and Israeli pullout, the Jewish Caucus formally withdrew from the NGO conference.

The final resolution of the NGO conference, which was overwhelmingly adopted, called Israel “a racist apartheid state,” guilty of the “systematic perpetration of racist crimes including war crimes, acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing ... and state terror against the Palestinian people. (source)

After all of that Jew Hating excitement the UN is ready to do it all over again. Only this time Libya get to chair the proceedings.

Watchdog groups see signs of a ‘second Durban’

JONNY PAUL, THE JERUSALEM POST Aug. 21, 2007

The first preparatory meeting leading to the 2009 UN World Conference against Racism will take place at the UN’s offices in Geneva next week and is already being deemed a “second Durban.”

The 2009 conference, whose venue has yet to be decided, will be a follow-up to the 2001 UN anti-racism conference held in Durban, South Africa, which focused on Israel and culminated in resolutions calling Israel an “apartheid state” and equating Zionism with racism. The US and IsraelAustralia and Canada accused it of “hypocrisy.” pulled their delegations from the conference;

“The anti-racism meeting in Geneva is shaping up to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, a watchdog NGO based in the city. “Every indicator is that the sequel to Durban will mimic both the format and script of the 2001 conference, using the noble language of anti-racism as a cover to promote hatred of the West and anti-Semitic, anti-Israel propaganda.

With the Islamic states also planning to add new accusations against the West under the claim of ‘religious defamation,’ this is a fiasco in the making.”

The preparatory meeting, which runs from August 27-31, will be chaired by Libya and include representatives of Argentina, Armenia, Belgium, Brazil, Cameroon, Chile, Croatia, Cuba, Estonia, Greece, India, Indonesia, Iran, Libya, Pakistan, Norway, Russia, Senegal, South Africa and Turkey. Those countries make up the bureau, the committee that will decide on the modalities and objectives of the 2009 conference.

Brasilia and New York are rumored as possible venues, although Libya and South Africa, whose Foreign Ministry is a major player in the process, are also seeking to host the conference.

“The composition of the preparatory committee including Iran and Libya, meeting for the reenactment of the infamous Durban conference, suggests that nothing has been learned since 2001,” said Prof. Gerald Steinberg, executive director of NGO Monitor. “Once again, the NGO network that hijacked Durban 2001 - funded by the Ford Foundation and European government aid programs - is preparing to play a key role in using this conference for the demonization of democracies and deligitimization of Israel.

“The designated chair is Libya, a racist regime that gave its highest award in 2002 to convicted French Holocaust-denier Roger Garaudy, brutalizes black African migrants, and tortures Bulgarian and Palestinian medics for the crime of being foreigners.”

Following the active role nongovernmental organizations played in Durban in 2001, NGO Monitor has expressed concerns about politicized groups taking part in the 2009 conference. The Jerusalem based-NGO Monitor has submitted to the Preparatory Committee a detailed analysis of the impact that would result from these groups’ involvement. It has urged the committee to carefully examine the credibility and biases resulting from NGO participation in order to avoid a repeat of Durban.

“Although these NGOs claim to promote universal human rights, the record shows that in reality, they advance biased agendas based on a highly distorted narrative that exploits and undermines international law,” NGO Monitor said. “Several of these NGOs, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty, played an active role in the NGO Forum in 2001. Rather than provide objective information to address the crucial issue of eliminating discrimination in all its forms, and through universal standards, many statements of these NGOs and their activities during the 2001 NGO Forum included highly inflammatory rhetoric and even anti-Semitic material, such as comparing Israel to Nazi Germany.

“The Final Declaration of the Forum endorsed the singling-out of Israel through a campaign that called for sanctions and boycotts against Israel through the abuse of the principles of human rights and international law,” NGO Monitor said.

“The question is whether UN Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour and others who claim to be committed to human rights will take the action that [then-UN high commissioner for human rights] Mary Robinson failed to in 2001 and prevent this farce,” Steinberg said. “Furthermore, will the major NGO superpowers, such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, which added their weight to the 2001 Durban travesty, repeat this role?

“In contrast, the Israeli Foreign Ministry, in cooperation with the US and perhaps other democratic governments, have heeded NGO Monitor’s analysis, and are actively raising these dangers with NGO funders, including the EU and its member governments, who fund these radical NGOs,” Steinberg said.

The Preparatory Committee will meet again in Geneva on April 21-30 and November 17-28, 2008.

WHY DON’T WE ALL CALL GOD-—BOB ?

Roman Catholic Dutch Bishop Martinus Petrus Maria Muskens, created quite the stir last week when he suggested that all religions use the Muslim term for God, Allah. He made his suggestion to promote understanding between faiths. He went on to say that the name is “a very beautiful word for God [so] shouldn’t we all say that from now on we will call God ‘Allah’?”

I think the Bishop is on to something. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all called God the same thing? Over the last few years so many countries have adopted a common name for things. For example a terrorist that kills Jews is called a militant. If we can unify language with regards to terrorists, isn’t it even more important to come up with a common name for the creator of the universe?

Where the Bishop strays is using the term Allah for God. Allah has much, too much baggage for the non-Muslims. And I am sure that the Muslims would not want to use the term God, it would almost be like converting. So I think we should come up with a new non-denominational term for the Lord. My Suggestion is BOB.

BOB would be a perfect name for God. First of all you wouldn’t have to perform major redesign of the Bible, both Bob and God have three letters so the new name would fit in perfectly. Obviously the Koran would have to be changed but we could sell it based on the two fewer letters in the name and how much paper and ink costs would be saved.

God’s new name would make our Maker seem so much more approachable and real. If we make the change I guarantee that you wont see a Time Magazine cover that asks “is Bob Dead?” And think about the people who have the habit of using the word “Dammit” after the word God. Their favorite expression will now be allowable since God will have a new name.

And think about the people who suffer from dyslexia. No longer will they have to be embarrassed by saying to their friends...”I swear to dog” because Bob spelled backwards is—BOB.

Think of how the kids will feel so much more comfortable going to a house of worship praying to Bob. How much easier it will be to have a personal connection with their Deity, Bob is so warm.

The only objection I can find is that Bob is also a name for people. Things could get a little confusing. Human Bobs might start to wonder why every time someone hears a sneeze they call out Bob Bless You and why the famous Marlin Brando movie is renamed the Bobfather But as far as I’m concerned, that’s a small price to pay, and in the end, It really shouldn’t be a problem. I have two Hispanic friends who are very Catholic—are named Jesus and there is no confusion.
There it is—my case all laid out. I think that the Bishops idea is a Bob-send. After all now that we can all agree to what to call God—maybe—just maybe we can stop trying to figure out what what to call God and instead listen inside of us and try to hear the voice of God, Bob or Allah that is within us all—I’ll bet you Bob would prefer it that way.

[I would call God ‘Bob’, before I would call him allah...granny]

INTERNATIONAL CRISIS GROUP - NEW BRIEFING

Uzbekistan: Stagnation and Uncertainty

Bishkek/Brussels, 22 August 2007: The international community must brace for civil conflict in Uzbekistan when the dictatorial president, Islom Karimov, leaves office.

Uzbekistan: Stagnation and Uncertainty, the latest International Crisis Group briefing, warns that two years after the Andijon massacre, the country remains a serious risk to itself and the region. The 69-year-old Karimov’s term ended formally in January but he shows no sign of stepping down. There is no clear successor or succession process, so an eventual power struggle could well be violent. The human rights situation is grave; a tightly controlled economy drives off investors and exacerbates grinding poverty. The regime cites the “war on terror” to justify authoritarian policies but its repression may instead be radicalising opponents and creating=2 0greater future danger.

“The political scene is full of uncertainty. The apparent public apathy reflects not support for the regime but rather pervasive fear and a sense of hopelessness”, Robert Templer, Crisis Group’s Asia Program Director, said. “There is great resentment, increasing the chance of serious unrest whose impact will be felt throughout Central Asia once Karimov steps down”.

In May 2005 the government killed hundreds of civilians while suppressing an uprising and demonstrations in Andijon. The EU imposed limited sanctions but these have not achieved the international investigation they sought or otherwise moderated government policies. The regime has made only token gestures to appease Western critics, while continuing to persecute human rights activists, journalists and the political opposition. Hundreds have sought refuge abroad, where they risk forced repatriation by Uzbek security services.

Some in the EU, notably Germany, favour scrapping sanctions and resuming “engagement” with the regime. Instead, the EU should make clear that for sanctions to be lifted, the government should meet specific benchmarks, such as allowing re-registration of NGOs closed down after Andijon and ending harassment of journalists and human rights activists. The International Committee of the Red Cross should get unrestricted access to all detention facilities and an independent rapporteur - backed by the UN or the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) - should be allowed to carry out an Andijon investigation.

The international community should also work at opening the Uzbek economy and improving the flow of information into and out of the country. Uzbek refugees and labour migrants should be helped so as not to become easy recruitment targets for Islamic radicals. Education abroad should be sustained, and the country’s neighbours helped to build up their ability to withstand the shocks likely to result from turmoil inside Uzbekistan. The international community should also tackle the criminal nature of the regime by targeting its assets abroad.

“The Andijon events showed the ineffectiveness of years of Western ‘engagement’ with this kleptocratic, repressive regime”, said Alain Délétroz, Crisis Group Vice-President for Europe. “There is little outsiders can do for now to influence events inside Uzbekistan but it is important to support ordinary citizens as well as to help the country’s neighbours prepare to withstand the regional shocks that are likely when Karimov finally leaves the scene”.

Beltway-itis: When Politicians Attack
By Michelle Malkin
Everything you hate about the culture of Washington is symbolized in two recent altercations involving two obnoxious Beltway buttinskis, one Democrat and one Republican. I’ve written about them before. They’re the bipartisan pushers and shovers, the VIP line-cutters who invoke the “Don’t you know who I am?” card to elbow past the little people, circumvent security lines and exempt themselves from the rules the rest of us have to follow…

Liberal Views, Black Victims
By Walter E. Williams
Last year, among the nation’s 10 largest cities, Philadelphia had the highest murder rate with 406 victims.
Cities such as Philadelphia, Baltimore, Detroit and Washington, D.C., all with large black populations, are experiencing the nation’s highest rates of murder and violent crime. This high murder rate is, and has been, predominantly a black problem. Liberals and their political allies say the problem is the easy accessibility of guns and greater gun control is the solution. But guns do not commit crimes; people do. One of our basic rights is the right to defend oneself against predators. If the government can’t or won’t protect people, people have a right to protect themselves…

Ron Paul’s Iowa Showing
By Paul M. Weyrich
Throughout the years I have received comments in support of Representative Ron Paul (R-TX). If he makes a major speech, casts a lone vote or is running for reelection, no other political figure has continued to have the lasting following that this unique Congressman from Texas has. The question is why?

Overturned Propane Tank Prompts Evacuations
Greg Bledsoe, NBC 7/39 Reporter

POSTED: 6:40 pm PDT August 20, 2007
UPDATED: 10:14 am PDT August 21, 2007

OTAY MESA, Calif. — A propane tanker overturned on Monday causing a
potentially explosive situation in Otay Mesa. The tanker, carrying
about 9,000 gallons of propane, slipped off of a trailer at an
industrial park crushing one car.

“It’s a total loss, a total loss,” said Enrique Ortiz, whose
sister’s car was hit by the falling tanker. Luckily, no one was
inside the parked car.

Firefighters say they got the call around 5:15 p.m. Monday evening.
However, Ortiz says the tanker actually overturned around 10 a.m. He
said the operators of the facility where the tanker was located
tried to upright the truck themselves.

When firefighters arrived, they quickly stopped that operation and
evacuated the area. It took firefighters and tow trucks about three
hours to raise up the tanker and get it onto a truck.

They say a mechanical malfunction is to blame for the propane tanker
overturning. No one was hurt.
