At this point in time, are we just wasting our money on supporting this adventure? We risk lives regularly to support the ship.

No one was a bigger supporter of the space program than me before the space shuttle days. The shuttle has never done what if was billed to do. We were told it would be able to take off at any time with very short notice. Instead it can take off after several months notice and only if there are no clouds in the sky.
The space station is even worse.
I still support a space program, but one done by humans who remain on earth.

Russian cosmonauts on Saturday began turning back on some crucial systems that had been shut down more than four days ago when a computer system on the Russian side of the international space station crashed.

Should have bought a Dell....

Some of us thrive on taking risks and get out of bed in the morning. ; )

This is good news, but in the longer view we are a long ways from the reliability needed for a manned trip to Mars and back. The Centaur apparently misfired slightly yesterday and that is one of the most reliable rocket systems ever. The satellite will probably have enough internal fuel to reach its orbit on its own, but mission lifetime will be limited.

Didn’t you hear Bradbury on Coast last night, or don’t you agree with him?

“We’re learning a great deal from the space station, and one of things we may be learning is we shouldn’t have built this particular one,” said Howard McCurdy, a space public policy expert at American University.

He says this after we’ve spent $100 billion dollars and it is only half built.

Right away I noticed the obvious lack of an antistatic wrist strap being used in that picture.

No wonder they are having so many problems. LOL!

It took four days to restore the capability of the computers.

That 'award winning' Dell Tech Support from Bangladesh strikes again.

(after 45 minutes on hold)
"Hi, my name is 'Tommy'. Do you have a firewall? Did you install any software? No, Okay - first, unplug your computer and wait 30 seconds then plug it in and re boot ..... Alright then, did that fix it?."

"NO?" Oh well, I think we have to reformat your hard drive."

*#&%&* Dell.

We are in space. In a spacestation. I think that is so cool.

Baby steps. Expensive but baby steps nevertheless.

May take us another 200 years to get to Mars. So?

You maybe missed my sarcasm.

I had a Dell from Hell. My Dell File (hard paper copies ) is over a 1/2" thick of junk that crapped out and had to be replaced. It was so bad I even had Dell replace stuff AFTER the warranty expired when I casually mentioned I just might contact the IL Attorney General under the Lemon Law.

So anytime I read of computers crashing, I think Dell.

So now I'm on an American Made, with American tech support Systemax p.c. - all in good ole Ohio, USA.

[My Dell crashed more than a blind man in a Demolition Derby.]

THIS is why we need people in space. Let’s see a remote robot probe fix itself by bypassing circuit boards. There is still no replacement for a real, honest-to-goodness “meat world” human being.
